This was a tough and fiery encounter, where Collingwood were looking to finally shake off the Colli-wobbles, their long 32 year premiership drought. They were playing Essendon, whom they had accounted for in the second semi-final, and themselves were looking for their first flag since 1985.

It says something about a club like Essendon and how they treat players when a bloke like Paul Salmon comes to Hawthorn after a long career with Essendon and ends his career saying he thinks of himself as a Hawthorn player who once played for Essendon. We loved the Big Fish at the Hawks.

Between 1958 and 1990, The Magpies played in nine Grand Finals with a net return of eight losses and a draw. 1960, 1964, 1966, 1970, 1977 (draw), 1977 (Grand Final replay loss), 1979, 1980, 1981. Since the 1990 and 2010 Grand Final victories, they have lost in 2002, 2003, 2011 and 2018 plus the 2010 drawn Grand Final.
Now three members of the Daicos family are Collingwood premiership players
You only needed to touch the ball to be awarded a mark. lol. The skill levels today are much higher. I had been a Pies supporter for 23 years before I saw the Pies win a premiership. Our captain was ahead of his time when it came to skill level. GoPies.

Full credit to the 'pies, but Essendon were handicapped by Sheedy, who instructed his team to attack the man and not the ball. Under the miscreant Irishman, the 'dons were the dirtiest team in the league. And who is to say God did not play hand, when the ball so often bounced unfavourably for Essendon?
Respect kevin sheedy, but he made some strange decisions which i think cost the bombers 2 or 3 flags
@@Yalbou Oh, I think the man has a good grasp of the game. My beef with him is that purposely instructed players to injure an opponent, and bragged about it in an interview. He needs to get out of footy and get into boxing.

Watched this game on the tele, in Hippy Valley in Tasmania. For personal reasons 1990 was an awful year.

This was surely the worst grand final of the modern era. There have been more one-sided games (1988, 2007 & 2019 to name just three), but at least in those you could admire the skill and obvious superiority of the winner. This game was just a snoozefest after quarter time. It was obvious from midway through the second term who would win, but the winning team went long stretches without even scoring.
You can see in hindsight why this Collingwood team went nowhere after 1990.
I'm glad someone agrees with me, I thought this game was very boring and I'd never watch the full match, even this I nearly fell asleep.
Essendon shot themselves in the foot with that brawl, they were fairly even up until then.
