      That was the goal. That, and a reality show like Shark Tank. Those were the actual comparisons the contestants/candidates were given to give them something to go off of in all the new areas of competition. So apparently they succeeded.

    Let’s talk about “sitting” in your evening gown. When you’re picking out your National Level Evening Gown, sitting...on the ground...is never a prerequisite that comes up. Also, those gowns are tailored to your body, I can’t even imagine getting down to the ground. How?! I would be wiggling like a worm trying to get back up. Wiggle wiggle baby.

    • @DaniWalker
      @DaniWalker  Před 4 lety +13

      I didn't even think of that, but you're so right. Honestly some of those girls probably couldn't sit in their gown because of the fit.

    • @edie2744

      I had a super tight mermaid gown for my pageant, and it was tailored to fit my tushie standing, so the entire evening I couldn't sit or really move or eat at all- I had around 2/3 inch of wiggle room to walk and after that I only wear ball gowns or alines hehe

    I would honestly have to say miss America hasn’t been the same since the late 90s. The glamour and the production and dancing was something everyone came back for year after year . I remember miss America being a must watch on an event scale as miss USA and universe . But not any more . When you think of miss America you think of heather whitestone, and Angela baraquio . People can’t name the most recent miss America because they weren’t spoken about or memorable . I know now that everyone understands what Cara Mund was talking about when she exposed miss America for how awful they were treating her and the crazy changes that were being made . It’s such a shame . I always wanted my daughter to compete for scholarship money with this organization but it is simply not desirable anymore . The pageant needs new leadership and to go back to Atlantic City . I hope it can be rescued since it is such an American staple ♥️

    • @DaniWalker
      @DaniWalker  Před 4 lety +4

    Dani, this was a very fair assessment of the Miss America organization and the pageant. My daughter held a local title for 2 years and the amount of work she and all titleholders put in is unbelievable! You hit the nail on the head when you said let the girls represent your organization and lighten up on all the platform stuff. It literally takes a year and you you still may not walk away with the crown. My daughter really loves being on stage and production numbers and we would bring a cheering squad. Now, she says they can announce the winner after interview and we can all go home.

    • @DaniWalker
      @DaniWalker  Před 4 lety

      Djuana Beruk thank you 😊 it is a huge commitment. Even at the local level. I think pageantry has so much to offer young women but the demands must be equal to the benefits. Your comment about announcing the winner after interview got me 🤣

  • @Kaiwaza
    @Kaiwaza Před 4 lety +28

    I’m loving this unusually acidic review. Miss America 2.0 is a train wreck. I understand Miss America is a job. But MAO, and MUO to a point, are making a mistake in thinking the public wants these titleholders to be selected on the basis of their perceived potential job performance. At their roots pageants by nature are sort escapist glamorous fantasy. The public doesn’t want to see 20 year olds trying to look 40, parading endless stories of tragedy, illness, injustice, etc. We want to see beauty, glamour, actual performing talent, and an opportunity for the ladies to show some intelligence and personality. Whoever wins the competition takes on the job of Miss America..but the pageant should not be a job interview. I enjoyed Miss America in the past, but I want to see a pageant...and truthfully, Miss America really doesn’t qualify as that anymore.

Now while I cannot give my opinion on this year’s Miss America winner ( I know Miss Virginia’s mother, so I’m biased because of that) I heard your voice and agree with a lot of what you said. Them sitting in the floor looked awkward and I miss evening gown and swimsuit. But I thought every talent demonstrated was great! I loved Miss Georgia’s talent outfit. I was a contestant back in the glamour days and earned enough scholarships to pay for some of my college. But, as you say, the real value of the pageant is in the self-esteem, self-confidence, and personal presentation skills you develop through competing - and every girl who pays attention while participating will leave with those improved. Job interviews are a piece of cake compare to MAO interviews. I know how to dress the part for any occasion and am as comfortable with celebrities as I am with toddlers. None of those skills are taught in college or K-12 classes. I agree, MAO would do well to focus on the personal development aspect.
    And I would never have been able to sit on the floor in my evening gown, I could barely perch on a chair!

Let’s just say it wasn’t the year to start competing at the state level when everything is changing and it definitely wasn’t the competition I grew up being inspired by. I love the concept of 2.0 but I hope they can be more prepared for 2021 and make it less stressful for candidates. I’m competing in USOA Miss Oregon in October and I am already so inspired and empowered by this new system!

      @@DaniWalker -- They need to watch the Miss France production! They're definitely choosing a cultural representative in addition to a title-holder (to compete at Miss Universe). It doesn't have to be one or the other as their competition shows. MAO would be better off with a board solely of former title-holders who fully understand what it to be Miss America and also know the potential that exists for the organization and the ladies that represent the organization at the state and national level. I guess time will tell.

    Wow this is a bit too harsh lol. I'm a fan of yours, I admire your passion and drive for pageantry and I feel like you have a lot to teach to young women in your country and the world, you have so much experience competing and judging as well though I've not been too familiar with miss America pageants in the past, I can really see that this years pageant wasn't properly organised, it reminds me of how most of the pageants in my country can be so disorganized and they usually lack the basic components of a good show. Thank you for taking out time to analyse the competition you brought so many things to light that were taken for granted and I can honestly say that I enjoyed watching this video so much, I laughed a lot and I have also learnt so much from you as an aspiring queen. I would love to see you as a judge in Miss America. Sending love from Nigeria.

I've actually received a lot of messages from former queens, board members and directors explaining that the issues in the organization run deep and what the public has seen is on the tip of the ice burg. There's a lot of people that are displeased but cannot voice the opinions for fear of repercussions from the organization. It's very sad. I wish I could fully disclose what's going on, but it's not my story to tell.

However, after 25 years in this organization, I’m truly saddened that we put you in a position to have the opportunity to make it. MAO could be so much more than it is right now. And actually, the “fixes” aren’t that hard. Whenever the 100th “competition” happens, I predict that it will be the last. There’s something new on the horizon that will be everything MAO could have been.... #staytuned

    Full disclosure- I’ve never competed in MAO- so maybe my opinion is irrelevant. But I think if they want a scholarship competition, they rename it The American Scholarship Program (or something like that), do away with the crown and sash and give a cup trophy and medal. Maybe let the girls wear a nice dress while they present their projects. Just- it’s too heavily ingrained in our culture as a pageant to be changed to something else while still using a name and regalia of a pageant.

      @@tonim3865 It was still Junior MIss in the mid 90s and we still got a medallion rather than a crown (well, I didn't win, but our winner got one). They added an essay portion at some point and weighted interview pretty high I think. They added an on stage question in the years after I competed (the girls all knew the question). Our particular program didn't actually give much scholarship money at the local level although I think it has improved over the years. My local university at one time gave full scholarships to any state Junior Miss. I knew several when i was in school. Due to the way scholarships are awarded at the school now, there is no such thing as a full scholarship, but I assume they have a good amount of money available for winners.

Unsatisfying despite the fact that Camille is of course beautiful, talented, and deserving, but just seemed so robotic in comparison with Georgia, who seemed fresh and spunky and killed it with her talent, and Missouri who was adorkable, my favorite moment was when she ran in the wrong direction going backstage reentering the shot behind GA and VA while freaking out; see, that’s what Miss America 2.0 could be, someone endearing and relatable while also talented and well-spoken. Why didn't they talk about CMN? Where was Nia's farewell? Did they even have the RIGHTS to announce each 'candidate's' talent? Also the feedback after each performance made it feel like the voice. The entire show made it feel like The Apprentice and The Voice (funny because they were both NBC shows, the network it was shown on).
