  • Dewalt releases all new new utility knives into the market, and that is a good thing...however!... I'm sure I'm already going to hear the fanboys crying that it's just like the Milwaukee Fast Back.

    Milwaukee didn't invent the concept but their version elevated the design into the stratosphere. That is what almost everyone carries and what everyone now copies. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. But competition is good for everyone both in design and price. Bring it.

    • @ToolReviewZone
      @ToolReviewZone  Před 3 měsíci +4

      I'll agree, but I don't think Milwaukee designed it. I've heard that workpro tools made it for them. They probably make this as well, but not 100%

      Exactly. Now Milwaukee will have to drop the price of the Fastback under the price of the Dewalt. Let them worry about any possible patent infringement. Not my problem.

      Milwaukee didn't elevate anything. Plunge lock (button lock) pocket knives have been around for decades in far superior forms.
      The fastback Is still just a cheap knife that isn't even close to the level quality of actual knife companies products.

    As a pocket knife hoarder, for utility these look well made especially for the price point. Cheapest knives I buy are $60+ lol.
    The thicker handle for most on the blade storage model is a con for constant daily carry, but that's why the other model exists. The fatter one with storage is more a heavy use guy, and the fatter handle actually gives better, more reliable grip on a job site.

      When he first pulled out the pocket knife I said to myself why would anyone buy a Dewalt (or any tool brand for that matter) pocket knife when they could get a better one from an exclusive knife manufacturer? But then when he said $15 I said well that’s why. I expected it to be closer to $60 but for $15 I’d get that to leave in my tool bag/box/belt.

    Bought mine today. The basic utility model. I switched the pocket clip to the opposite side but even though I tightened it down the clip was loose. I used my Dremel with ball end burr took it down where the screw goes in so when tightened the screw pressed tight against the clip. Then , on the other side there is a slot that appears to be for a lanyard but there is a screw in serving no purpose. So I just put a little pressure on that screw and it popped out. Then I put in a nice short lanyard. Nice 👍

    Usually the paper test for the blade is done from slicing from the outside to the inside. stabing the paper and ripping through it does little to show the quality of the factory edge. Because your technically poking the paper and causing it to rip before the edge is cutting. Kind of bypassing the test all together

    The belt clip on the blade end was about to be a deal breaker for me. Since it is reversible, I like it. Makes no sense to me to have the clip on the blade end. You have to pull the knife, then turn it over to use it. With the clip on the haft end, it comes out ready to use.

  • @stevep2448

    The button lock is a Benchmade design. When the patent was up, everyone stole the idea.
    Saying DeWalt is copying Milwaukee when Milwaukee is just a copy... just seems silly.

  • @melgross
    @melgross Před 2 měsíci

    Talk about copying. What I would like DeWalt to make is the small right angle battery powered die grinder Milwaukee makes. I use 2” Rolox disks a lot. A right angle grinder works well. But they’re too slow and too big and heavy. I ended up buying the Harbor Freight Warrior $15 right angle grinder (on sale for $9.99). It’s smaller and lighter and the weaker motor is fine for those. I don’t like the thumb trigger with the strong spring. The Milwaukee grinder is perfect. But I really don’t want to spend over $400 for a tool, charger and batteries for that one purpose, because, really, I have no other use for it. If DeWalt came out with one I would buy it.

    $14.97 for that first one? Cheap Gas-station knife that likely costs 1/3 as much without the Dewalt logo on it. Reminds me of the cheap DeWalt multi-tool you can buy. (No, not THAT multi-tool that is battery-powered. That one is great. The other one.) Will never understand why DeWalt does this. Yes, we all know that when it comes to the most common three among the Pros, you have Makita, Milwaukee, and the higher-end DeWalt tools. The lower-end ones?.... Okay, some of them are quite good. Still worth buying. But these knives are below the lower-end DeWalt models. Not worth it unless you want to include an "official" DeWalt knife in a Photo-shoot featuring your latest, quality, DeWalt power-tool purchase.

I've had some from Lowes that had decent steel and it was noted on the blades. That said some of the mystery metal folders have been good enough. I'm going to buy the thinner version later because I collect ones I think are interesting. I didn't like how the fastback didn't quite fit my hand. I bought one and then never used it.
    Update: I'm going to have to return it because it exposes more than half the blade. I don't know what kind of psychopath made that decision but if i flip the blade around I should have a fresh cutting surface. I'm legitimately very upset. I thought I found the perfect knife.

    He says it cuts well but he does a plunge cut into the paper instead of slicing into it from the edge as is standard.
    Says they open easy even though the flipper fails multiple times.
    He was either doesn't know much about knives or doesn't want to anger the company. I couldn't care less if fanboys are triggered by the last two. Utility knives flood the market now so it's irrelevant. Find what you like and stick with it. What matters for any knife is how it performs it's basic tasks and in this video the first two are questionable at best.
    Oh, and if you are going to review knives, including what specific materials they are made from helps. Especially for the blade.

    I'm not mad about the knives, in fact I think they're neat. I'm mad DeWalt is getting its teeth kicked in by Milwaukee and Milwaukee Jr. (Ryobi) in the innovation department

      @@ToolReviewZone Lol, he's asking for blade steel as in the mixture of alloys. 8Cr13MoV would be a softer steel whereas CPM S30V is considered a super steel. It's a knife snob thing. If you're spending $14 on a utility blade it ain't gonna be God's gift to steel, and it doesn't need to be. These are supposed to be workhorse knives so you can leave your pocket princesses at home, LOL. I have a Spyderco Manix 2 that was $120, but it gets no special treatment. It's the most expensive box tape cutter I own, lol.

      @@ToolReviewZone ha ha. I think he was asking alloy type. I did a quick search online and says 8CR13MOV (assuming I got the right knife).
