    The Babadook Official Trailer #1 (2014) - Essie Davis Horror Movie HD
    Amelia (Essie Davis) is a widow who lost her husband in a heart-breaking stroke of shit luck: he was killed in a car accident while driving to the delivery of their first son. Now six years old, young Sam (Noah Wiseman) has begun to develop behavioral problems and incestuous tendencies, and their neighbors have become increasingly distant as a result. When Amelia discovers a ominously-covered, never-before-seen pop-up book called The Babadook on Sam's shelf, she decides to immediately debut it as a bedtime story.

    People need to see this movie in the right way. This movie was meant to build up paranoia and fright, instead of using cheap jumpscares. That's not horror. It's just startling the audience. In order for a movie to be truly scary, it needs to build up a sinister environment upon the audience so it will lead to a good enough scene that will scare the daylights out of people. Silly jump scares are just cheap ways to scare people. And more importantly, the horror movie needs to reflect some type of relatable content. Say someone had a real problem with being terrified of the dark. A horror movie needs to have someone relate to that, so they can be scared.

    • @gnsmovies8849
      @gnsmovies8849 Před 7 lety +73

      Well said mate! That's exactly the problem with horror movies today. People have forgotten what scary is. Nowadays people rate a move on how scary it is based on how many times they jumped out of their seat. Jump scares can be really good but they have to be used right. The best example I can think of is in The Woman In Black. The jump scares in the movie are used to scare you yes, but also are used to build more tension into the scenes.

    I'm really glad that I was able to discover this magnificent film. I love horror films but recently there isn't anything good being released. Every horror film nowadays is about plot being recycled, sexualizing women and adding jump scares in every bit of the scenes just to call it a horror movie. This film, The Babadook, goes more in depth of how a human's mind and emotion are scarier than any monster. How depression, grief and anxiety will always remain as part of our lives and we can never get rid of it only accept it. I truly connect deeply to this film as I lost my father 9 years ago on the day of his birthday. The grief has subsequently declined over the years but whenever his birthday comes I am always reminded of his death. I don't even miss my father anymore, I just keep thinking of what could've been if he was still with us. I keep being reminded of the pain when I hardly remember the person anymore.

    I strongly recommend this movie. It is not just about a movie scaring you. It can also give you a nice lesson in the end: you can't get rid of your grief, you just have to learn to live with it. Many scary movies are just there to scare you with no rightful resolution in the end, but this one makes things all the fight worth it in the end. That is why this is my favorite horror movie of all time.

The monster itself isn't shown much, and it's more of a slow journey into insanity or an interpretation of a path away from grief, which to people who enjoy the many jump scares and loud scenes won't really get into.

    I liked this movie.
    It wasn’t one of those stupid horror movies that rely too much on the scary noises and scary characters.
    Although I didn’t feel scared, I was so unsettled. And the setting, the acting, the sounds, the climax. It was all good.

    • @endangeredmexican9644

      It definetly tried to make a scary character and scary noises. Dont you hear how the monster talks? Deep raspy voice almost similar to the grudge but more cringeworthy, also hes literally a dark figure thats not something very original. The truth is this film attracted casuals and it was overhyped by them making the actual horror fans disgusted. This is atrocious and definetly doesn't deserve the hype.

    I’ve seen a lot of horror movies over the years, and I usually don’t get scared very easily, but The Babadook is one of the few movies I’ve seen that has genuinely creeped me out. This movie is a perfect example of what a horror movie should be. It doesn’t have a loud jumpscare every 10 seconds and it’s not super violent and gory. It has a creepy, dreadful atmosphere with disturbing imagery, and it messes with your imagination. It’s definitely a must-watch if you’re a horror movie buff like me.

It is you that you fear, and you cannot escape yourslf. To me, that is terror. Metaphor strong horror film. 5 stars from me.

      Making these types of horror films are extremely risky though. The Babadook is lucky because it's still an underground film, horror movies like this that get mainstream attention are trashed to death by the public because they don't follow the same horror movie formula. Unfortunately that's what happened with The Blair Witch Project, here we have a masterpiece horror flick that's extremely unique and uses atmosphere rather than imagery to frighten the viewer, but it was completely condemned by the public for not showing any deaths or monsters therefore it was 'lame' and 'boring'. It's best if these kind of horror films are kept quiet so they get proper recognition from genuine film lovers and horror fans, rather than get bad mouthed by people who are frightened at the thought of using their brain during a film.

    • @CunningCondor

      Ted Suehsdorf Well if you love sound and music you'll love The Babadook. It's also one of those horror films you have to watch alone to experience the actual fear. The whole film has such a creepy and eery feel to it, even the parts that are supposed to be the happier scenes dark. I love a good jump scare too, but atmosphere and music is what genuinely gets me frightened. The shining is a perfect example of hybrid horror for me, the atmosphere, music, and jump scares are all extremely frightening, the opening scene is enough to freak you out. I'm sure you've probably watched it already, but if you haven't you must. Snowtown Murders (more of a thriller than a horror, but still frightening otherwise), Alien, The Descent are all great hybrids too in my opinion. The Descent is the most intense, heart pounding horror film I've ever scene, it uses all of the major themes of fear perfectly (Heights, Claustrophobia, Darkness in particular)
      and don't even get me started on the jump scares, the music and cinematography are masterpieces and the ending is fantastic, definitely recommend if you haven't already.

    Most people have no god damned clue about what this movie is about. It is influenced by a short story which is a bit similar. There are not many interpretations. There is one. The babadook is either only in the mother's head or it is a force that entered the mother because of her unstable emotions and impulses that start driving her insane. The buried impulse is to kill the child from the beginning. The child feels this and this is why he is afraid of the babadook. At first the mother cannot realise that her son sees her as his possible murderer because he senses the impulse. It is indeed a scary story but too intricate for a lot of viewers to grasp. They are too dumb to get the horror.

      @SheisGraceful Před 7 lety +8

      I haven't seen the movie, but you are totally right. That's why these kind of movies always become more scary, because they don't show the "scary thing". Maybe slight shadows of this "creature", but not too much. We imagine what scares us the most.
      That's why it always seems scarier when someone for example retell a horror movie that they've seen to you, and you listen instead of seeing it in front of you. That means, that you again get to imagine everything yourself and what you imagine will be something that you're the most scared of. But most times, when you see the movie yourself, it turns out to be something that you have not expected and it dissapoints you.
      It's kind of like reading a book and then watching a movie. Why can the book maybe be better? When someone just describes something to you without showing you anything, you get to make up what will interest you the most. Maybe how a person looks for example. If the author describes features, you make up a whole face. If the author describes a person's characterestics, you make up a personality. Maybe someone else thinks that a person in a book has a different personality than you think, based on what they've interpreted from the same characterestics written about the person. You make up what will suit your mind best. Now it will be more fun for you to continue reading about this person. But maybe if you watch the movie, it isn't what you have imagined, but something else. Maybe that's because the movie, often, becomes less interesting to you because this character isn't made from your mind and interests.

      That's why Insidious sucked for me. You get a clear look at the monster multiple times and it ruins it.

      babadook is a film about greif and pain of life. it is about istinct and fear. it is not a monster movie in any ways. the monster is the fragment of the mother's sadness and pain. it is about love as it is about greifm a perfectly executed psychological horror. i dont think you got the point. but in someways, you are correct. the movie scared the shit out of me with no jumpscares or an actuall paranormal being.

    @Asemafilmi Před 9 lety +67

    I'm a film maker myself and just last year I finished my latest movie "Black Spring". After seeing Babadook I was amazed by the similarities with these films. I swear I didn't know anything about this movie before seeing it two weeks ago! I had lost very dear relative of mine year ago and I wanted to make a movie about thoughts and feelings I have. As in this movie, a grief turns into a supernatural form. The main difference is that my movie is more about searching reason when there's none and Babadook is about trying to make grief go away without dealing with it. That being said, the message is very similiar too: it's important to let go.
    And yeah, even though my movie is not nearly as good as the Babadook, I would like more people to see that :) It's Finnish film but I'm gonna add the english subtitles when our big "international release" happens Friday the 13th of March.

  • @geeitshurisboringarowndhee9479

    One of the best horror movies I have ever seen. If you think carefully...
    *SPOILER*
    I think the Babadook was actually Amelia's grief telling her to sacrifice the child because she can't get the fathers death out of her mind. And when Sam saw it, I think he was basically seeing his mother go crazy.
    Grief really doesn't go away, so you can't get rid of the Babadook.
    And the Babadook is also a vision of the father because that's what mainly her grief is about.
    And the Babadook is in the cellular because all of his memories are still there.
    I have a feeling I'm wrong because DID drag sam to the wall and Amelia is feeding it worms at the end. But that's what I think. Amazing movie.

    I'll be honest, this is the most terrifying movie I've ever seen. Not in the traditional horror genre way of gore and jump scares. As someone who has suffered loss and not fully coped with it while also raising an atypically developing child, I can very much relate. That's why this worked for me. Maybe terrifying isn't even the right way to put it. It made me reflect on myself and my own feelings. Spoiler: when he's stroking his mom's cheek in the basement it made me breakdown crying. I love my son to death, but I worry that my frustration would ever make him feel unloved. When he says, "I know you don't love me mommy, but I love you." it broke my heart.

    Perhaps the best psychological horror film I've ever seen. Don't let the name fool you. Suspenseful throughout, the viewer doesn't get a break as the tension slowly builds. The film masterfully balances its scenes with the monster, which is itself unnerving. Perhaps the darkest angle is witnessing the deterioration of the mother/son relationship, as she eventually becomes murderous towards her child under the Babadook's influence.
    Ignore the philistines who wouldn't know a good movie if it hit them in the face. Some people only understand cheap jump scares. This movie is pure class.

    I feel like the reason a lot of audience members were disappointed was because of the marketing for this movie. This trailer makes it appear to be a generic "creature-feature" when in reality it's much better than that. I adored the movie, but it makes me kinda sad to see so much disappointment from casual audiences. Sure, the critics loved it. But the audience didn't. And that's a little depressing.
