  • This week on FM Live, Mike Usrey shows us the easy step by step process of rebuilding your brake calipers using our new rebuild kits. (Ignore the sirens) Please note: We highly recommend wearing safety glasses during this process, just to ensure no spray or fluid accidentally ends up in your eyes. Be safe!

    How do you know if you need to rebuild your calipers? The biggest tell-tale is that the pads on one side of a caliper and/or just one caliper compared to the other side of the car (left/right) wears more or less. Uneven pad wear is usually a good indcator that the slides are not working properly and/or the piston is not extending/retracting fully. Time for a rebuild!

    This video is insanely helpful, used it during my rebuild process. I watched videos from other channels as well, but this one had the most detail and ensures someone doing this for the first time won't get it wrong. Recommend this to anyone else thinking about trying this (plus the video on the rears, too). Only feedback is on the dust boots - see below if curious:
    I did try both ways of getting the dust boots on, and I do find the other method much easier. That is, putting the boot on the bottom of the piston (outside of caliper) w/ the inner seal just barely hanging off, tilt it into the back of the caliper groove first (which is the harder part to get to) and then work around to the front getting the boot fully seated (still a little tricky) w/ the piston "hanging loose" (but supported in hands). And only then gently pushing the piston partway in, then getting the top of the boot in the piston groove, then pushing all the way in. I struggled for a long time to do it the other way, but first time trying it this way and I got it done in 3 min with very cleanly seated boot. Just describing in case anyone wants to try a different way - some people might find the way in this video easier, but I got frustrated. For me the boot didn't want to seat nicely as I pushed it in, it wanted to be crinkled and uneven, and getting to the back of it is a nightmare. Great tutorial though.

    Just a note, you need to use safety glasses during these type of assemblies. Good job!

    Also think rear callipers need a future focus. The handbrake mechanism adds an extra complication for us newbies.

    It is a lot easier to put the outer boot in before the piston.

    Great vid Mike. Tip to protect surfaces from Brake fluid: Brake fuild is corrosive and will ruin paint and metal surfaces.
    Solution: spray liberal amounts of windex on any surface that may or has come in contact with brake fluid. It helps neutralize the brake fluid and makes it easy to clean.
    BTW Mike, car is running awesome, thank you for your personal assistance during the trunk build. ✌🏼

    Great video. Does the rear caliper kit provide new components for the manual piston back-out device? If not is there any particular maintenance that device need during rebuild?

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před rokem

      The kit does not include the parking brake adjuster gear. However, the included piston does have the necessary guts to interface directly with the existing parking brake gears inside the caliper. We don't carry the adjusters but you can usually find them through salvage yards for really cheap. Mazda also sells them (if still available - the part number should be BW0H-26-733). As far as maintenance, while you have the caliper apart, it's probably a good idea to add a little high-temp brake grease to those little gears if needed.

    Could you guys do a future video on a rear caliper rebuild? Particularly with a recommendation for long nose snapring pliers? Completely understand if there's not enough demand to justify it.

    Can you install the dust shield before you install the piston?

    • @nothingsworking
      @nothingsworking Před rokem

      I usually put the dust shield on the bottom of the piston and have it stretched out. so it hangs from it like a skirt, its can be tricky and annoying but on some brakes this is the only way you can put the outer edge to seat properly. it's hard to explain it. but I certainly dont like to poke the rubber parts with a sharp thing to force into place when the pistons is working against you. Here's this method: czcams.com/video/EWNnUd7tTK4/video.html
      (I've not watched this full video only searched for the dust boot placement)

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před rokem

      Mike had issues with the rubber boot catching on the piston and getting pulled out of place when he tried other methods. This seemed to be the simplest solution.

    Doing it with caliper on car isn't so bad if you are sensible and just put an old set of brake pads on one side to stop the piston over-extending. Then you can manhandle it the rest of the way out!
