Welcome to this weeks restoration project. This time i am tackling a pair of 25 year old Brembo brake calipers and hopefully restoring them back to their former glory!
First job as usual is a bit of theatrical unboxing and a good visual inspection to make sure that the calipers are suitable for restoration and dont have any cracks in the castings. Im pleased to say they checked out well and the only issue to be found is that one of the calipers had stuck pistons hence the reason the silver has started to turn gold with the amount of heat that had built up at some point.
So with inspection complete i started to tear the calipers apart, i was expecting to have a real fight on my hands but i was pleasantly surprised when there old Brembo's came apart surprisingly easy. The pistons were very nearly completely seized up it took 150psi of air pressure to budge them!
Once apart i could finally pull the pistons and seals out the cylinders are in good condition with no wear at all so thats nice. I then took the caliper halves to the parts washer to remove years of brake fluid, oil and road grime. Once dried off i masked off and plugged up all threaded and delicate areas and proceeded to blast them back to bare alloy in the media blaster.
Once back to bare metal i could mask them up properly and get them ready for primer and paint, All coatings used in this painting process are all perfectly cable of dealing with the temps and abuse associated with brake calipers so no need to flood the comment section with worries about this issue. The bare metal was prepped with an etch primer, then re-coated with a high build primer to smooth out the casting marks. while this was curing i took the old bolts and flung them into a rust eating solution to prep them for later plating.
When the primer was dry i proceeded to wet flat them back to remove all defects and leave a nice smooth surface so the final coat will be super smooth and shiny. I gave them 3 coats of colour matched red and while that was flashing off i made up the Brembo logo stencil and cut it out of vinyl on the plotter and applied it to the calipers with mm precision then it was coated with pure white base coat de-masked and clear coated.
While the paint was curing i moved onto the plating process and broke out the super sketchy bench grinder again :) the plating process will be explained in detail in an upcoming video so i wont go into detail here but you can see the bolts came out like new and i chose to go with silver passivate instead of the yellow as it would look weird against the red. I then polished the stainless steel parts with the buffing wheel on the pillar drill.
Then it was simply a case of re-assembly being careful the loctite, grease and torque up all specified parts as well as being super careful not to damage the awesome finish :)
So i hope you all enjoyed this Episode and i will be back with more content very soon.

Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.
Brilliant idea 👌👍 . keep it up bro

Did you use heatresistant paint for the calipers?

I often thought that an artist was someone who painted or sang years later I realized that true artists are the restorers of things that other people call trash or would throw away. You are one of these; a TRUE artist.
That's why they say it's subjective. Wether it's a painting, restored car, or a lamp
You did a heck of a job, I haven't scene a video like yours with so much detail. Can I send my calipers to you for refinishing?

Ah yes, restore to the good old days 😂

Lmao
I love that you actually painted on the brembo logo instead of just slapping a sticker on there and clear coating over it.
Forget about all the cool file sets, nice paint gun etc... that vinyl cutter is the real deal
I bought a Silhouette Cameo 4 for about 300€, really good for the price!
This is probably the best caliper restoration I've ever seen. Fantastic job. I'm going to watch more of your videos since I really like your work, and videos.
Fantastic work. I honestly can’t understand how anyone can dislike this video. The mind boggles. Great job and great attention to detail 👍🏼
Thanks for the kind comment buddy :)
Rob is so lucky to have someone like you , my wife of 41 years thinks when you finally finish decorating the house , you go back and start again. Anything for my lady . Keep the videos coming , love them .
There is something so satisfying in repairing and restoring mechanical things be it these calipers or your Ducati. I love buying older cars and bikes "with good bones" and returning them back to the street where they belong. Your videos are so very well done and get always bring a smile to my face seeing the completed project. Well done, Sir!
Thank you very much sir :)
A little trick you can do when using a mask for lettering etc is to apply a light coat of the background colour after the mask is applied and before the lettering colour is applied. Any slight bleeds will be invisible.
I stumbled across your channel a couple of weeks ago and have been hooked ever since. Who needs TV or Netflix when there is content like yours? I've never seen a guy that literally has a tool for everything. You are a freak, but in the nicest possible way. Keep up the great work.
This was so relaxing and satisfying to watch. Thank you for sharing the video
Nicely done! 👏 Now go back and put the rubber rings 23:07 on the dust caps under the bleed nut 1:52 so they don’t get lost. 🙂
Haha i knew someone would spot that ;) Glad you enjoyed it :)

Fresh paint, hardware and rubber, so satisfying. This was next level vs that green one you did before. You delivered. The cross over tube fittings were still a bit chewed up, so you get a 9 out of 10. Keep it up. I really didn't think the bolts would clean up and plate as nice as they did. Too cool.
Thank you very much for your kind comment :)
Loved these calipers on my old Porsche. To change the pads, you just need a piece of wood, chisel, hammer and a dowel.
man i will assemble my brembos myself after seeing this. I thought these were special press fit boots. NOPE just seat them properly and they latch in. TY and great video!
I really love the contrapposition between your old and used tools and the “llike new” restorations!
Man your videos helps me relax, perfect timing for a new video after a hard long day. Cheers
No problem glad you enjoy my videos :)
Superb service.....looks like brand new Brake Calipers, professionally done. First time I saw a restoration done that way. Really don't mind paying more for that kind of service. Lately I saw BREMBO BRAKES in Mountain Bikes......
Blue Loctite in a red bottle.
This is why I have trust issues.
vice versa for red loctite in blue bottle.
Mine are all in red bottle but has a dot of blue, red, green, purple for strength. That big ass bottle is over 100 dollars.
Your attention to detail is very nice to watch ! Many ppl have the same tools and access to all these machines but your talent and detailed work is on another level in my opinion, keep up the excellent work and i look forward to watching more of your videos.
The cool thing about this to me is even if you show all steps, I still ask how?... Nicely done.
Thank you for your kind comment :)
Friend. Que paso con los vídeos...?
I need this man's service for my brake calipers.
I am O / H on the brakes of the Supra Mk4 now, which was very helpful. Thank you.
From Japan.
Truly amazing work! Brembo brakes really deserve this sort of restoration and for a Ducati, I would even say it's mandatory!
This is so relaxing to watch... you're a master of your craft!
I enjoyed the real sounds of the work and tools instead of head banging drumming.Great video. The video was as good as the brakes.
A masterclass in how to do the job properly. Thank you for sharing your skills.
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment :)
Beautiful work man. Amazing all around skills and loved the vinyl machine, when I saw it I thought this guy has it all.

awesome bro....I always watching you video....greeting from central java Indonesia...👍🙏🙏
Perfect man! I have a friend here in Brazil that make this kind of work. It is pretty amazing the recicle process. Congrats!
What a relaxing channel to watch on a Saturday afternoon with a beer! Usually I always find CZcams videos have some annoying thing - shaky camera, bad lighting, bad angles, annoying commentator, etc. Your channel has none of those. Thank you for all the detail and effort you put into these.
Exceptional video, you said a thousand words without saying one word.
Really bad ass rebuild! No stone left unturned. Whatever it cost the owner, well worth the quality of this work.
Amazing restoration! Those calipers are now as good as they were when they left the factory, albeit in a snazzier colour! You, sir, have yourself a new subscriber.
Thank you very much for your kind comment and for subscribing it really does mean a lot :)
Agreed. I just hit that button as well.

Looks like the same caliper for my 300zx. Awesome video.
How funny. Yesterday I literally was looking at restoring some evo 8 Brembo calipers for my 98 eclipse lol.
Nice 👍 I have 97 eclipse myself

Amazing restoration. U became a pro. I love it without music and without skipping important parts. Torque is really important.
Your videos are better than meditation.
Glad you like them! :)
I love seeing dead things come back to life. Outstanding job and thank you for only clicking the torque wrench once. LOL.
Thank you for your comment, Glad you enjoyed it :)
Clicking it twice is to ensure you reached the proper torque. After one click the torque may have built up and the wrench clicked because the torque was believed to have been reached. But if you go back a second time it will often tighten more. Then you know you are much closer to torque than with one click
Really Random Channel qa
That looks amazing! Looks better than my rattle canned stock calipers.
Time to rebuild the sketchy bench grinder. That would be a good video. Great job!
If I had all that equipment and time, this would be such a rewarding and fun project!
I can't really believe how good they came out, it's lots impressive! Can you please explain us what is contained in the bowls for the prepping before the coating, and after that? I believe that these are solutions for neutralizing, but I'm really curious, since they came out in an astonishing way. Thank you a lot! :D
Wow, a perfect work. I restore some 20 years old BMW brake caliper with a metalbrush and sandpaper. I mount new pistons, new seals and rubbers. Not perfect same Your work but for my possibilietis the result was great. A lot of better than before.
Best caliper job on CZcams, done perfectly.
Thank you very much :)
I'm an engineer for a brake company and design brake calipers for a living and would like to set a few things straight here. Sure these calipers might look 'restored' but every time you drive your vehicle the brakes go through a heat cycle and this thermally fatigues the metal. This means that over time the tensile strength of aluminium falls away considerably (up to as much as half of its 'new' tensile strength value). This translates to increased caliper flex under braking and, in extreme cases, could eventually result in complete failure of the caliper body.
So whilst the calipers might have a nice layer of shiny new paint on them, the aluminium body of which they are made has aged and will be compromising performance. In race calipers this is in fact exactly how they determine whether the caliper needs changing, they measure the hardness of the aluminium which correlates with the materials tensile strength value.
Brake calipers, like many vehicle components, are in fact a consumable part and should be changed periodically. This is why anybody who engineers brake calipers never likes the idea of people 'restoring' them, i.e. applying shiny paint. After 25 years of use I'd suggest your calipers are well past their best, perhaps even verging on being dangerous.
I became concerned when I realized that he was planning on reusing the hardware. That all should have been tossed out and new purchased,. The caliper bodies should have been checked instead of merely repainted.
good point, I partially agree I would not like to buy those ones thinking they are new because they look so but they are not, that is clear and to be considered when you use a used parts
but that fatigue and the tensile strength loss of the aluminum cannot be determined by how old is a caliper, can be?
a more accurate way to determine it's condition will be for how much use has had and the way it has been treated. You would probably agree that It is not the same a caliper that comes from a daily driver/weekend toy car abused sporadically than another one that is used on the track every week.
I know is there no way to be sure of which kind is the one restored here but I just wanted to give my point here that an old caliper doesn't always mean an abused caliper
@@Marc-gm5cm These look like offshore junk that shows up on eBay, Craigslist and Alibaba that get people killed who think that they are buying new parts.
@@epistte you are wrong they look quite well actually.
Also I would like to see the source that proves what you say of how much people are killed by caliper fail, could you tell us how many? have you got any numbers so far?
@@Marc-gm5cm I never said that they don't look good. They look brand new/NOS. The fact that they look good but that paint and shiny hardware may well be hiding fatal flaws. The problem is that he reused hardware that should have been replaced and the caliper bodies do not have an infinite lifespan because of both heat cycling and mechanical stress. They may well have more life left in them if the car that they are installed on is only used on the street and has not been modified for additional performance, but if they are used on a track car then all bets are off. When something does happen on the track it will catch the driver out and it's too late to do anything when a brake caliper fails at 200 KPH plus.
Love Brembo brakes. My SS Camaro had them and my ZL1 has them as well.
Agreed, they are awesome looking and performing brakes :)

@@RRCRestoration They are like the Rolex of brakes, best know, good quality, performance and looks. But very far from being the best out there.
I'm a mechanic and I love watching you do this stuff. I wish customers would let me do this stuff for their cars. But most of them don't even care enough to check oil level in there super pricy sports cars.... Then want a warranty on the engine when it seizes due to oil starvation.
A lot of people look at paintings and are amazed... a good set of restored brembo’s does it for me 😉👌🏻

I’ll never understand how a fairly simple forged piece of metal can cost thousands of $$
@Newblood Those calipwrs in a 305 config can be picked up for $200 used. But yeah , new they're pretty expensive!
try and make them yourself and you'll understand why they cost thousands

Research and development is an expensive ordeal. Add to that testing to ensure the brakes still operate 20 years from now, and all kinds of legislation and law things.

What was the powder and liquid you poured in with the bolts to remove the corrosion?
He uses deoxidizing powder with hot water. Deox c is the branded version but there are many different brands of the same chems.
What was that powder you used for the partial cleaning of the bolts ?
I'd also love to know this.
Phenomenal!!!

satisfying to watch :) How much torque do you use on the four main bolts that holds the two halves together?
