- Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the Panama Canal is a man-made waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The 50-mile passage allows ships to avoid the long route around the southernmost tip of South America and its completion was a significant milestone for maritime trade.
In this video, we’ll provide an overview and tips from our December 2021 partial transit of the Panama Canal when our ship - the Emerald Princess - sailed through the new Agua Clara locks, from the Caribbean Sea to Gatun Lake and back.

My husband and I are planning on taking a full transit on Norwegian Jade in 2026. Cann't wait!!
Thanks for the video. We are sailing on HAL in Feb for a 14 day cruise through the canal from Fl to San Diego. Made sure we have a balcony suite to help get some great viewing.
Informative video. Thank you for the tips!
Great explanation of the locks and Gatun Lake
Wonderful, very clear. I am looking for Panama canal cruise and this helps me to watch out what to do.
Thank you for this video. It's sure helping me plan my cruise to the Canal.
So glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you have an amazing cruise to the Canal!
Thanks for the info!
Really enjoyed this. We’re sailing this itinerary in March.
Hope you enjoy your cruise and visit to the Panama Canal!
What is the best time to visit Agua Clara locks to see ships?
Thank you, we are doing a cruise threw the Panama Canal in November
Hope you enjoy your Panama Canal transit!
Great Tips. If we were doing a full 14 days from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles, which side of the ship should be on? We are looking to book a balcony on the Island Princess.
We recommend you spend your time in the locks on the public decks so you can see all sides, so we don't really have any recommendations for a balcony. If you're traveling the Auga Clara Locks like we did, the port/left side of the ship would see the control center and the starboard/right side of the ship will see the water saving basins.
