  • In this video I fly my Super Cub over to Alton Bay Ice Runway in Alton, New Hampshire. Alton Bay Ice Runway (B18) is the only FAA approved Ice Runway in the continental lower 48 United States. The weather and the runway were perfect. Light winds, and not that much traffic at the airport compared to a sunny weekend day.

    Enjoyed your video. I was there for 4 days last week and saw lots of air traffic this year. Last winter the strip never opened as there was not enough ice. My summer place is near the north end of the runway. Enjoyed the aerial view!

    Great video - beautiful! Nicely shot, edited, and narrated - and perfect choice of background music. Thanks so much for this aviation treat and lucky for us to have such a wonderful lake here in NH.

    Grew up in Alton and didn't realize how special this was as a kid, just seemed normal to have planes on the bay, ha!
    Thanks for the video, I've definitely never seen the lake from this perspective ❤

    Thank you, I was taught to taxi without using the brakes anyway. lol I have landed my Swift on an icy runway in NH once, Loved It, thirty years ago, forget the airstrip ;-(

      Did you need any braking

    • @FalconImagery
      @FalconImagery  Před 3 lety +1

      @@alanmekler5412 No, I just came in at around 50-55mph across threshold, and maintained "happy feet" on the rudder pedals. Only when I was nearly stopped did I test the brakes to see what the reaction would be. Suffice it to say, braking was negligible. As you can see on the runway it was pretty much clear ice.

    Great flight. I’ll get up there by car. Local rental company in Nashua limits to 3K ft paved runways. I need to get proactive and check out in the taildraggers at Sterling.

      You'll enjoy it. Just be patient for traffic in the air and on the runway. They don't have a taxiway so everyone landing has to back-taxi. It was good to hear how well the pilots were all talking to each other so that no one was surprised where someone was.

    What kind of cameras do you use for flying? I absolutely loved watching this video!!! Ty for sharing. I flew over the lake last weekend with my hubby ❤️💫 we r hoping to go there and land soon🎉🎉🎉

      I use a GoPro Hero 7 on the left wing, and two GoPro Hero 5s inside the cockpit. I also had an Insta360 OneX (360 degree camera) on the left wing, but it failed me. It locked up during the "saving" stage. If you look at some of my other flight videos you can see that Insta360 OneX working. With that camera you can get rotating images as part of the post-editing phase.

    No chance of this today, we are looking at a record breaking ice-out. This is the second year in a row with no ice runway.

    @5:46 ... is that a plane that didn't make take off, stuck in the snow at the end of the runway?
    Also, awesome video 😀
