Why FAA Requires Private Pilot Students to Learn Basic Instrument Maneuvers

In this video I go over the primary purpose of Basic Instrument Maneuver Flight Training. The fatality rate for VFR pilots who inadvertently get themselves into IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) is shockingly high. The best way to prevent becoming an FAA statistic is to learn how to avoid getting into IMC conditions as a VFR pilot in the first place. However, if you accidently do find ...

Thanks a lot for clearing my doubt
I’m a Laconia native living in Greenville, SC. I know the Moultonboro airport well, and especially the Laconia airport, I used to live in the condos on 11B across from Patrick’s. Good luck.
Excellent explanation! Much obliged.
Thank you for taking the time to go through this
The FAA should NOT be Regulation TOY Model Airplanes.
But it F's the TOY AIRPLANE R/C Pilot not flying on a(RESERVATION) FRIIA F(AA-Recognized Identification Area) i.e.an FAA approved Radio Controle flying Site. Limmited to Model Flying of 400' AGL, even thoughFAR 91.119 Minimum safe altitudes: Clearly states in Sub Part (b) over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft. Accordiing to the Scottsdale AZ FSDO an openair assembly of persons can be 33'000 People at a conxert or 2 People on a blanket having a picnic.
Former Bristol resident here, I never really saw any planes flying in or out of 2N2 in the many years I lived there. Recently I took a trip back up there to relive some memories and went and swung by 2196M who now has a few broken windows.
Great Shirt! 😊
Lots of regulatory requirements, but not a lot of safety benefit.
Great video. The stuff about the doors and the possibility of 135 requirement reminds me a lot of the NTSB recommendations that came out of the FlyNyon incident in NYC.
Thank you
Good
Applicants should be able to take ther flight chks with the feds; afterall we already pay them with tax dollars!.back in my day most examiners were retired high time military airmen with at least 5000 flt hrs some military check airmen! Most of my flt chks were with these guys exacting and fair; and it didnt cost me a dime!
Paying civilian check airmen 800 dollars for a pvt checkrid is ridiculous!!!
That's on the low side. At the Redbird Migration conference in Houston, TX in March they did a hand poll to see what the highest DPE rate was for a Private Pilot Checkride. $1700 came in at the highest.
Thank you for an excellent refresher on inadvertent flight from VMC to IMC. I use the OG spoke method for sixpack scanning to see what instruments are doing what. When I was a fledgling Private Pilot I had a primal fear of accidentally flying into IMC conditions. It was that fear that motivated me to get an IFR endorsement. 😊
Great job explaining this often overlooked topic. Flight plans have much to offer on xc’s. It always amazes me at the number of VFR flights skirting the perimeter of the Houston Bravo without FF or talking to anyone. Makes for a very congested slice of airspace with compressed traffic that resembles a Nascar track. So easy to improve the safety odds and check in with ATC. Really enjoy your videos.
Thank you, and glad to hear you finding my information helpful.
Great video!
Thanks!
Good video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I haven't filed a VFR flight plan in a VERY LONG time. I will use a flight following on anything longer than 50~60 miles. The only down side is.... sometimes the controllers get grumpy with VFR people. I think that is VERY wrong of them. Just a few days ago, I was going through busy airspace, and I needed to drop under a layer, so I let them know what I was doing. When I got to 5500'.... I told the controller "Level at 5500 Feet", and his response was literally.... "Good for you, contact XXX on XXX". He basically handed me off just because he didn't want to talk to me. I think part of the problem is, some controllers tell us to report any change in course or altitude, and some just say "Maintain VFR". I think there needs to be a standardization to flight following. This was a long flight (260mi) and I talked to at least 6 different centers/approach controllers.... and most were very friendly. Normally on a flight like this, I would have just filed IFR to make life easy.... but I didn't want to be in IMC in this particular plane.
Surprised you don’t add trim to make it easier to hold elevation.
I find most students don't get the trim out fast enough after they roll out, resulting in them ballooning too much.
I don't trim during steeps. The heavy nose is a signal that the airplane is in an abnormal condition and needs correction. If you trim out hands free, you don't get that feedback.
i wish to thank you for sharing this flying video with me . Amen
You’re welcome.
Solar powered lights and electric airplanes….. oh goodie! Another stupid, expensive unnecessary money pit.
Thanks! I am a private pilot and am glad they are loosening the LSA market some because GA needs more affordable airplanes. Moving the max air speed up to 250 will negate the low cost of a stout enough airframe and they will certainly need the same ADS-B requirements to see and be seen pushing costs up further but necessary. Good report. I like to see a Federal Agency actually working for and with us to make this industry better. I was told by a FAA Inspector who visited our 135 Check Hauling operation out of Love Field after a short discussion about ramp checks. My concern since we were on a hot schedule similar to Fedex getting money into the Federal Reserve Banks on time, a ramp check could blow any earned revenue from a trip. He said they understood that, and wouldn't do that. Further they let us know when they planned a visit so some principals could be present if they wanted to look at manifests for example, or aircraft log books. No need to feel intimidated was the message and they displayed that attitude.
Thank you
You're welcome
great job
My 17 year old son slated to get his license tomorrow here in Ft.Wayne.,Was a pilot at 16 but you have to wait until your 17th birthday. So many weather and check pilot delays but months later, here we are!!! He’s going to fly commercial. Congrats on your flying!!!!!!!!
Good luck to your son! Waiting for DPE availability for a checkride has been a big issue, and very expensive to students who have to continue to maintain their top proficiency for the checkride.
@@FalconImagery Yep!
You need to make an episode about the BAD sides of the Act, such as how it will destroy the Part 91 tour industry and severely impact skydiving.
I may do that!
Facts
What kills a good amount of pilot for qualifying for basic med is the having a third class or higher before a certain time. Eliminate that date. I went to sea as a career change for 15 years. I sold my plane and gave up my hanger. Now that I am retired, I would like to get a basic med. The fear of being denied a third class med because of certain but approved prescription drugs has kept me from doing so. Once denied you are screwed. Also it is hard to find a Designated 5:45 Medical Examiner. Our two is 250k plus a student population of 72k. What is up with that?
I think the initial basic med had a 10 year look back from 2016 when basic med went into effect. So, if you received a 3rd class medical after 2006, and you meet the other requirements, you qualify to fly under basic med.
Talk to Dr Fernand Parent, bear pittsburgh. Dude is like 94 years old and he hooks people up.
@@Mistamannfour Why limit the "grandfathering" to a 10 year look back? My last medical was 2000, but I am not willing to jeopardize Sport Pilot privileges by playing FAA Medical games of "we'd like some more information." My point is once you apply for a medical, you are denied Sport Pilot privileges UNTIL you receive a passing medical or run thru all the hoops for Special Issuance. Not worth rolling the dice, as I don't need to fly at night, or carry more than one passenger.
Tysm,very informative video
You are welcome
Lots of good news in this vid. Thanks for the update!
The DPE problem is the biggest problem addressed! Most DPEs now are not even responding to repeated phone calls and/or texts. This pressures candidates not to discontinue for weather or illness for fear of adding another 4 months onto their checkride.
Ive had my app in for over a year to become a DPE. I was told by the manager that they were not looking at adding any 😂

My guess is the insurance companies will have something to say about a pilot with Basic Med flying an airplane with 12,500 lbs gross weight. Generally they have begun declining to cover pilots over 70 flying multi-engine turbine aircraft single pilot.
When will the new Basic med expansion come into effect?
When do the basic med changes go into effect?
Well I know it killed the Banning CA airport allowing the city to close it to build warehouses with no consequences from the FAA. It was last min. change and it went through.
Restrictions on 100LL after 2030? 6 years and then we all need to pay >$40k for a new engine that uses and alternative fuel source.
40K will be a bargain, current tsio360 is close to 90K
No body is buying a new engine. 100UL is already available and is already approved for all aviation engines.
G100UL doesn’t require any modification. Just pay for the STC and you are good to go.
Elections have consequences. ...just sayin'.
@@ThePudgie123and stolen elections have dire consequences.
So the FAA is changing the rules after they already killed GA. Probably too little, too late. The cost to enter GA is still so high, it's off limits to 99% of the population.
10 days for registration? It took me over a year! And that was only because I got AOPA involved to push it along. Seems like a lot of welcome changes.
Great job
