- Big Data is an effective monopoly that has hamstrung small business. This “data cartel” is suppressing competition and innovation on both a commercial and individual basis. Chrysostom spoke of personal accounts of the problems and challenges in this area as an entrepreneur and her proposals to level the playing field. She painted a picture of what impact control and portability of our data would have on people around the globe. As Chrysostom stated, “the people will benefit more as the monopolies become less powerful and competition and small business rise.”

Thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, these companies are the very definition of a monopoly-having the exclusive possession (or control) of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service. It's not dissimilar to the unethical acts that John D. Rockefeller was doing in the oil industry so many years ago. When companies gain such tremendous market share and control, not only does it hurt/suppress the competition, but they begin to control the entire landscape as well.

It's called search supression. Google only allows money people and left views onboard. Google needs to go. It's a sick mismanaged 'company' and has made the internet become a single net. One voice only.
@@silentnarcissist3969 Actually they use bots. Their first big one was Watson AI. Look up Watson AI vs Jeopardy. It took getting feedback before Watson could win and then it skunked the best contestants. Google does it WITHOUT feedback.

I believe a big company should only be big if it expanded from within not outside. As long as there's still competition.
standard oil was not a monopoly, it was going to be destroyed by Royal Dutch Shell if it weren't for the government stepping in first.

Them censoring people with decent educations, knowledge about religions, politics, societies, history, theories, scientific research, critical thinking, liberalism, etc. It’s being controlled by the government and the people on the upper table, ruling for their liking and only letting children and idiotic adults use it properly not to get unpopular and lose money. Yes, I agree. BUT HOW? This is the 1st ted talk I have seen that outlines a problem without giving viewers a single suggestion as to how to go about solving it.
She did give a solution.. the solution was to have control of our data and if used produce revenue. Andrew Yang spoke a lot about this as well during his run for president. What needs to happen next is enforce them through the U.S government for the people.

I'm a Realtor and Certified Appraiser and monopolies are now ruining the RE Market...pricing out a large majority of buyers, buying out entire neighborhoods to rent them...its rediculous as its supposed to be illegal
Very true im glad there are some people like you looking into this. Too many business are using sly n a busive tactics. More and more people are noticing !excessive ads everywhere. They do know the apps are already infested with data draing ads. Ads that bring in trackers 'anvassers an user info harvesters. This just the tip of user nightmare. Customers are the ones paying to have ads shoved in their faces thru more data usage. I wish there more people to expose this scandal.

We used to be allowed to own software. That's what computers were all about and why they were meant to be better then Nintendo machines. Commodore 64's way (with better modern stuff) is the way to go. The people trying to recreate the Commodore 64 is trying to do emulation and not getting we need a NEW computer to compete and wipe off the smug faces of MS and Apple.

The idea that we could sell our data is pretty weird, our data is the payment for using google's services "for free" such as youtube, facebook, instagram, snapchat, gmail, googledocs etc.
It's sad though that android phones comes with preinstalled google bloatware. I paid for my phone and to use data but they still milk my info from my phone. That is some real piracy right there.

This speech is wrong in so many ways. Google is FREE. You aren't paying for this with your money but with your data. It'is very expensive to develop and improve these products.
You can see and download the data Google has ever recorded from you. Monopolization is inevitable in these industries. Imagine if you would have to go to 5 different pages to connect with your friends. The company that collects the more data can improve its products and more users will come, it is a snowball effect.

Second thing those companies clearly mentioned how they are gonna use and collect data for advertising so you simply can't blame them.
