- A mid-September trip to the West side of Algonquin Park with friends! The weather was beautiful (for the most part😅) and we had a great time paddling and portaging through the Rain Lake area.
This loop was a commitment to portaging but absolutely worth it because I finally got to check out the big portage between Cranebill and Islet Lakes!

Great trip video. Nice to get out with friends!
Nice trip, wolves howling, the tough black 2100 portage, moose bones and that big step in the mud Lol!
13:43 ahhhhhh, the lovely scent of swamp gas that will now forever permeate those boots.
That was so much fun Rachel. Great job with the video. We really loved watching and reliving the trip
I did that 40 into Islet in.....I dunno, 1995 or so. It was different then. It was all sandy, so you couldn't get any footing as you went straight up, then straight down. A pretty miserable experience. I wonder if the carry now takes place in a slightly different spot or if it has just grown in over the years. Stayed on the same Islet site you did - love that rock outcropping, what a great place to sit that was!
Hope you have more camping vids to come.. these kind of camping videos are the only thing that gets me through winter!!
Very cool. Was nice to see that part of the park. Paddle on!!
Awesome weather. I'm from the west and mid Sept weather is rarely like that in the shield. Cheers!
Hi Rach. New subscriber here. I've been enjoying you back catalogue. Such a beautiful place Algonquin Park!
Thanks so much! 🙂 Algonquin never disappoints!
Very nice trip. Have you encounter any ticks? I've seen your other Massasauga video where you found a bunch. Thank you.
Thanks! The only other place we've seen ticks was in Kawartha Highlands. I found 6 of them on Starbuck! It seems that each year they are getting worse. Stay safe out there :)
That pull out for the Rain-Sawyer portage is not a great deal of fun in a strong wind, when waves are crashing on those rocks. Nor is that staircase from on the Rain side of Hot-Rain (in any weather). Almost every time I've been in the Rain/Sawyer/Jubilee area, I've heard wolves overnight.
Is Rain Lake and Sawyer know for being supper windy?
Hi Rachel, loved the video. I have a question for ya...how was the portage from Cranebill to Islet? I know the maps are saying that it's an unmaintained portage so I'm just wondering how overgrown the portage is? Was it hard to navigate through or is the trail visible enough from end to end. Any help or insight would wonderful, thanks a ton!!
The trail was mostly visible the entire way but it is LONG and with some steep sections (and in some cases wet, due to streams). I wouldn't introduce anyone to portaging on this trail but if you have some experience and a good mindset it's not so bad! The really killer is the portage over the hiking trail. It goes straight up and straight down and is basically unavoidable at the end of the Cranebill portage.
Thanks for watching! Happy Adventuring!
