  • MALAY STREET FOOD IN PENANG - Curry Mee + Laksa in Ayer Itam
Welcome back to another episode of Chopstick Travel with Luke Martin. Today, we take you on a street food tour just outside of Georgetown, Penang to a small village called Air Itam. Situated just into the mountain-side, this little town is famous for delicious STREET FOOD! Among the street food stalls selling all kinds of Malaysian foods and Chinese-influence foods, there are two very famous spots: one selling a traditional curry mee and the other a traditional assam laksa!
We also checked out the beautiful Buddhist temple - Kek Lok Si, while we were there, and took in the beautiful views.
We couldn’t resist the classic Malaysian dessert - cendol, in downtown Penang, before heading to one of our favourite dishes of all time (not just in Malaysia) - bak kut teh. It is a medicinal soup filled with vegetables and tofu and it cooked in an earthenware pot. The best way to end a day of street food eating and exploring!

The late Anthony Bourdain once called Sarawak Laksa as “breakfast of the Gods”. We may not know of his spiritual proclivity but we know one thing for sure: Sarawak Laksa makes for an amazing breakfast (and lunch and dinner).
Significantly different from the many types of laksa available in the Peninsular Malaysia, the Sarawak Laksa is made with sambal belacan, coconut milk, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, and lemongrass. Served with rice vermicelli noodles and topped with strips of chicken and prawn, this Bornean iteration of the laksa is beloved by all Sarawakians and is ate together by families and friends no matter the time of the day.
In honour of Anthony Bourdain, let’s kick off our list with Choon Hui Café, where the laksa stall he first fell in love with in 2005 stands. Since then he has returned to the coffee shop off Jalan Ban Hock many times, even buying a round of meals for everyone in the restaurant during one visit. He may not be around anymore, but his legacy at Choon Hui lives on.
Queue for the Sarawak Laksa begins right from the opening time, and the pages in the order book go up to a few flips in a matter of minutes. And then proceed to the waiting game. The stall keepers work diligently like a well-oiled machine making one laksa after another but expect to wait for up to an hour or more. In the meantime, find a seat and order some other appetisers, like the popiahor toast with egg. The laksa is definitely worth the wait: Bursting to the brim with local Sarawak pepper and spices, the bowl is offered in three different sizes, and come with king prawns, poached chicken, shredded omelette and a generous helping of noodles and beansprouts.

Penang is a hidden gem in Malaysia. The street food which are not over rated and too commercialised are still delicious and very affordable. The nicest Street food are usually hidden from the eye of the public. I am proud to say this because I am born and raised in Penang. 😊

      Restaurant name is Teck Teh.
And, for your info the word 'Teh' in Bak Kut Teh is not referring to tea as many Malaysians might have said to you. In Malay language 'Teh' is tea. But, the original meaning of 'Teh' is the nickname of the uncle (Ah Teh)) who started the Bak Kut Teh business backed in the 1940s.

14:01 Don't know if anyone corrected a pronunciation, but I thought this was interesting. The location "Klang" is actually pronounced "Clang" (single syllable) in English (because you used the words Klang Style". I just realized that you pronounced it via the Malay phoneticism where all "a" is pronounced as "ah". It is pronounced "Ke-Lung" (two syllables) if spoken in Malay. Happy New Year! The food is totally unrecognizable as authentic traditional Penang fare. The laksa is too watery and without the requisite herbs and condiments thought the prawn paste looks decent enough and the chendol is a very lazy Nyonya trying to cut corners. It looks more like badly dyed thick vermicelli hor, Malaysians will agree with this.

@@LukeMartin Klang is about an hour away from KL Sentral by train. If you're free in the morning, Klang is worth a visit. Walking distance from the Klang Railway Station is Little India, which comprises rows and rows of Indian shops including restaurants selling all sorts of Indian things. You can try good Indian food here. It's much larger and has more variety than the Little India in Brickfields, KL. Also Chong Kok Kopitiam is right opposite the Klang railway station where you can have a good breakfast Malaysian Chinese-style with toast, kaya, eggs, coffee and lots more. Nearby are other Chinese and Malay restaurants or stalls selling their own dishes. Some historical buildings are in walking distance as well. The Klang Bah Kut Teh is a must-try as mentioned earlier. You even had Klang-style BKT in Penang.

True, Sei Ngai Chai Bak Kut Teh tastes good BUT the shop really has serious hygiene problem. I don't think it's a good recommendation.

Sabrina always look so pretty when wearing exotic clothes. She is such a good sport and loyal companion. When are you going to marry her? I think that would be awesome!
I'm surprised to see that Chinese food is so prevalent here, and it's so delicious! I love that sister noodle. Why do they fill the bowls with broth and then dump it back into the pot? Is it to remove excess starch from noodle and thicken broth at the same time? Everything just look so hearty and delicious, perfect for winter. Love how you are mixing things up with some site seeing. Looking forward to the next one!
