- Earlier this month it was revealed that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) suspected its Islamabad station chief may have been poisoned by Pakistan's military intelligence service, the ISI, following the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden.
While the reports have not been confirmed, some say such level of suspicion points to growing distrust between the two countries.
Those within US intelligence argue Pakistan is playing a "double game" by saying it supports the US' role in the region, while also supporting the Taliban.
Pakistani officials have denied these long-standing allegations, while others believe double games are essential because their interests do not always align with those of the US. Such distrust, however, has left many to wonder about the future of relations between the two countries.
In this week's Arena, we bring together former heads of the two countries' intelligence agencies to debate their sensitive relationship.
Michael Flynn, former Director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency under President Obama and author of, The Field of Fight: How We Can Win the Global War Against Radical Islam and Its Allies, is in debate with Asad Durrani, the former head of the ISI, and one of the main architects of Pakistan's Mujahideen policy in Afghanistan.
Editor's note: The Arena was recorded prior to the US drone strike in Pakistan that killed Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

What an idiotic way of looking at the world. Who suffers from Pakistan playing double game? MANY countries. Pakistan has been attempting to contract work for building nuclear weapons for over 30 years.
Pakistan also funds and provides a safe haven for the Taliban because they are a Pashtun majority group who they can use as an asset against border incursions from Afghanistan and as military assets for the ISI.
This simplistic thinking attempts to make the US the boogie man of EVERY situation. At the expense of the Pakistani people who find themselves abducted by the ISI and tortured in secret when they fall out of line.

I never really understood the alliance between Pakistan and US in the 21st century. It just seems like a sad remnant of their cold war relations, which were honestly quite destructive when we consider their effects today.

one must not disregard history of near past when US left the region as soon as russians left afghanistan and told them you are on your own to deal with over 5 million refugees. i think pakistan does not trust US for may be the right reasons. Also pakistan cannot afford to have a very visible indian footprint in afghanistan (with the help of US) like its eastern border.
Pakistan is as much committed to her national interests and national policy as US is committed to her. Why should Pakistan betray her position and should prefer to serve the national interests of US? Let me remind you guys Pakistan is the only country in the world that has waged a full scale war on its own soil against its own people with almost 50,000 civilian and security personnel having lost their lives.
Pakistan faces its worst case scenario ever by having lost $60-80 billion of total economic loss since joining the 'war on terror' and more than $12 billion dollars of annual cost.
Pakistan has staked everything in this war and are constantly paying a heavy price in terms of violence, massive displacement, export stagnation, investor hesitation, and worsening law and order situation.
As a country Pakistan is doing everything it can. And yet, one is bewildered at Pakistan's demonizing by its friends and allies.

US funded ISI for many decades. ISI used that money to train home grown militants to fight Soviets. After the war was over these militants turned into many terrorist organizations - Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad(JeM) which started attacking India. Many of the former members of these group spread to Arab and started their own organanization like Al-Qaeda which has many factions under it spreading to Middle East and Africa. Pakistan dont see them as terrorist because they are not attacking Pakistan then how can Pakistan take action against them if US or India says so.
We play Hypocrisy with Hypocrites, that's what a democracy is. Do what interests ur nation. US amry here in Afghanistan is to protect Americans, ISI is to safe every inch of Pakistan. If this is a mutual interest then what's wrong is with US gov?... Politics is a dirty game which can't be played fairly.
