In all those books you've been collecting you've gotta have some vintage cookbooks you can display in that rack! And I'm really interested to see you use the gallery rails - I think they're so pretty and add so much gorgeous character!

Dang, girl, I want to be you when I grow up! (I’m 65 lol). I’m just amazed at how innovative and creative you are. Those porch posts are absolutely perfect, and black makes your incredible island a total showstopper! You are simply astonishing, and my absolute favorite CZcamsr.
We built our house almost 50 yrs ago...and l was so sick of this place ...t b at l took two week vacation after we finally finished....don't let anybody romanticize building house ..it is hard demanding 24-7 days of worrying work and sweat...and l had 2 kids to look after and meals to cook and my husband was working a full-time job!!! I love our house...but you wouldn't have loved my videos🤣✌

I thought the same also about the brass foot rail, it would really make that side pop! I also love the black, it completely transformed the island. I have a picture I saved on Pinterest of a drawer that rolls out under the farmers sink instead of doors and also one that would be great for storage in the space on your island. I’m amazed how you are building those cabinets❣️❤️❤️❤️

My father was a carpenter/cabinet builder, watching you build your own cabinets is not only impressive but brings back fond memories of helping my father. I knew you were going to choose black paint for the island, it’s so complimentary to that gorgeous marble. I have to say Kinsey’s playfulness with that blue cap was an added bonus - she’s an adorable happy dog. 🤩

you may want to add an access panel on the side of the island so you can get into that dead space for storage. Lots of over sized items you could store in there. Looking good!
Could be a sheet pan storage space
Large oversized platters can be stored as well as the sheet pans.
Paper towels in bulk too !
I saw someone store a six foot long folding table in a space like this…. They used it for crafting and paint projects so it kept their dinning table free of that kind of thing but could be stored away when it wasn’t needed.

Painting the island black just pulled that whole space together! It grounds it and relates to the windows and soapstone counters. Your balancing of materials and colours is perfection!

The island looks amazing!, I particularly like that you incorporated the porch posts into the design. I am in awe, not only of what you choose to take on just by watching CZcams videos, but also by the great job you do. I like when you explain your thought process for why you make your design choices and am amazed by the number of variables you take into account.. On a side note, Kinsley is adorable! I particularly enjoy watching her carrying around her blue cap.😁
I would strongly recommend when you build in your structure to cover the garbage disposal etc. in your undersink cabinet, that you create the sides and front as one single piece that can then be slid out of the cupboard entirely, as this will make it much, much easier in the event that you need to have work done on any of the plumbing. I have to say I'm really impressed with how true to your original vision this kitchen is turning out, and it looks absolutely stunning! You are doing such great work, im so happy for you that all your hard work is paying off now and you are getting to do all the fun stuff and seeing it all come together. Is it weird that I'm really stupidly proud of a complete stranger? 😃
I agree with the slide out idea. Having had to work on 2 garbage disposals as soon as MaCenna mentioned building sides around the garage disposal i thought oh no. Otherwise it is beautiful. MaCenna kuddos to you!! and Romeo too!

That space next to the spice cabinet would be so cute as shelving on both sides for cook books!
I love this idea, but 4” depth is too shallow. I kept thinking decorative antique glass or crockery with a invisible lighting. It’s very inconvenient for spices.

The pony wall that you brought out 10" from the back of island would be perfect narrow storage for baking sheets, muffin pans, etc if you added doors on either sides of islands. Really great narrow storage idea
I was thinking that it was a missed opportunity not putting doors on the back of the island to access that storage.
I agree, I see open book shelves or platter storage would be nice. I see plate rack, vases or candle sticks storage were the proposed spice rack is.
I agree I was thinking a slide out rack would be perfect for that space.

@@prosie1968 Awesome idea! Spices aren't pretty or interesting and can be hidden, but a wall with cookbooks and pretty platters, maybe a bud vase, could look fantastic when viewed from the dining room!!

I have been watching you since before you bought your beautiful cottage and today your episode made my literally cry. Your kitchen is so amazing and what a feeling it must be to have done this by your own hand. Well done McKenna you are an inspiration.
You should be immensely proud of yourself! What an accomplishment at each stage of this renovation/build. I listen to you describing what you're doing in this girly, kind of giddy tone and it's funny to reconcile that with the fact that you are doing something, "for the first time", that most people hire a skilled professional to do at great expense. Your parents must be over the moon proud of the person you are!
I absolutely love that you are building your own cabinets. That would scare me, but you are just tackling it and getting it done. An idea for the end rack on the island would be to slip in some vintage cookbooks with beautiful front covers. Can't wait to see your kitchen completed!

I had no idea how invested I would be in this series. I started watching literally day 1 when you showed us the cottage after you got the keys. And I was like, "Ok, i'm not sure how I feel about going from DIYs and interior decorating in LA to this" and then here I am, just waiting for every episode to drop.

I imagine you have likely finished more of the kitchen but wanted to share an idea just in case.
While boxing in the garbage disposal you could use magnets to secure the front panel and attach a pull ring or simply cut a finger hole in a top corner. Given that area has water flowing through it, the quicker the accessibility during a crisis the better.
You are doing an incredible job with your cottage. I believe you are inspiring many with your designing and building things like the island with no prior experience. Even stepping outside your “comfort zone” with colour choices, like the island, likely gives people the incentive to go bravely where they have not before.
I grinned when you squealed with delight at your refrigerator. Being a fresh food foodie, that is something I would do.
Keep doing all you do. You are teaching with every paintbrush stroke and screw of your drill.

I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!! The space next to the shelving, where you kept it open to add electric, you should do a storage drawer. We had a cabinet that shape growing up and my Mom used it for baking sheets and cutting boards.

Love the idea of using those for legs for an ottoman for the reading room. Candle stick idea is also a nice option. But the ottoman legs just sounds perfect for your home.

Wow just Wow! I'm torn with which was my favorite part. That countertop.. you and your mom gushing over the granite.. or Kinsley picking up the blue plastic lid toy left and right.... I think she wins, she's just too cute 🤣
Great color choice for the island. When I remodeled my kitchen last year, I painted the walls a creamy white, the cabinets Swiss Coffee and the front of the island, where the chairs go, I installed bead board and painted it black. I have dark brass hardware on cupboard doors, drawers and outlet plates. It all looks amazing. I also painted inside of the windows black. I have black accents throughout my kitchen, such as my toaster, tea kettle and dish towels. I never had black in a kitchen before and I love it.

I would reccomend maybe tiling or doing peel and stick tile under your kitchen sink. Even though you're doing a great job getting everything "perfect", you don't want your cabinets ruined if the plumbing leaks

Love the island! You should put beautiful cookbooks or artwork on the shelves and put in a roll out shelf in the empty space beside it and behind the dishwasher.

I think another great idea for the little spice rack could have been a DIY mercury glass mirror behind there. That sparkly, reflective surface, along with some little brass rails could look great.
