This week we are bringing in all the warmth from DIY faux beams to custom-designed boxed-in windows that I planned for over a year ago! … let's just hope I can figure out how to put all the pieces together!

Finally! What i love about this series is that you actually get to see how much it takes to get a kitchen as beautiful as yours is going to be, but also, that you can o it yourself. it doesn't have to be so expensive and impossible to make something beautiful, and even if it isn't perfect it doesn't matter because you made it so you are proud of it no matter. I can't wait for the rest!

When I heard that you decided to miter the edges of the beams I was so excited cause style looks so clean. As for the safety equipment, working at Home Depot myself, they actually require us to NOT wear gloves when we use the big saws (table saw, miter saw) because there is a chance to of the glove getting caught. You do what makes you feel safe, I just figured I would throw that out cause I don't want you to get hurt.
Yes, this is what I always learned too. Gloves are not safe, they can pull your whole hand up into the blade before you know what's even happening. Please look it up and check me on this, but I believe this is true.

Adding another voice to this one because it's really counterintuitive right up until you see it in action. No gloves on rotational tools.
Also no lose clothing, cords from hoodies, hair, jewellery, headphone wires etc. Secure anything that could winch your body toward the blade.
Adding to the thread because I personally know someone who lost two fingers because they wore gloves while working with a table saw. He is 70 years and has been working with power tools his whole life
Bumping this. Commented this before too. A clean cut is better than a mangled hand - speaking as someone who cut off their fingertip.

I just bought my first house (build in 1914) and I've now caulked windows by myself, built a sofa table by myself, and plan to build a bathroom hutch, too. All from your badass inspiration! I love the windows here so much, wow. Great job!!!! 😍😍

Sometimes I’d watch someone do these kind of stuff and I’ll be thinking that the design and concept was great but poorly executed.. but never with you, MaCenna! Great job always!

McCenna you have more innate gifts and determination than most people because you have a vision. I couldn't do it. When I saw the finished product of the boxed windows I got goosebumps because they are so uniquely done. I don't get goosebumps over much. You are sooo lucky to have such a great mother (and father of cos), who not only shops with you in thrift and flea markets (1st dibs and all 😄), work on the house (and beams!!) with you and can paint so beautifully!!! 💕💕 And the kitchen box windows look so beautiful with the clear glass vase and flowers.... Absolutely Stunning. It’s so wonderful to see you put the character back into your home. So fun to see you, Romeo and your mum working together to work out how to get the job done.
Details are everything! They really do matter. Sure you could cut corners, and it would look cookie-cutter, but when you respect the history and merge it with the here and now - perfection. It's difference between knowing you can change something out when you get bored with it versus walking into a space and experiencing a feeling that you never want to go away - the thought of changing NEVER comes to mind. The fact that you're showing DIYers that difference is awesome, MaCenna, and because of that I have subscribed to your channel.
When you finish your house, you could print all the sketches, inspo pics, plans, budget and what you finally spent, before and after pictures of the whole house, etc., and make a book. You can also add the history of the house, since it was built until you're finished.
I have to say, I've never been so invested in a youtube series before lol

For the wood stain, I would suggest finding someone local who refinishes antique furniture. They will know. I used to know how to create that color with stain but I've forgotten lol.
It's also possible to faux paint and recreate that antique heart pine color, using at least three different colors of paint,in layers.

Advice on any future beams you do: use wood glue in addition to brad nails. It will really add strength, so they don’t end up falling on someone’s head one day
Or hopefully some screws here and there

That window surround is so beautiful….you have a knack for putting together wood trims that create a vintage classic look that BLOWS ME AWAY………..
Make yourself a “T” out of wood to use for supporting items on ceilings. Used for holding drywall on ceiling while nailing in place as an example.

I've always love the style of the early 20th century, arts and crafts, all that lovely old wood, and here you are building a dream house fit for the 21st century!
The window trim, stain and beams look so pretty. I think the stain matches the original stain beautifully.
I've had a question on the yard that I've been meaning to ask is what you'll be putting down for greenery? Since its not going to be your full time residence would it make sense to do a grass alternative like clover? Or a natural local plant landscape instead of grass which is extremely water and care intensive.

Was so funny watching your Mom hold the beam with a roller. When we put our beams up on our 14 foot ceilings, I held ours up over my head with a 6 foot level while my husband installed it. Got the job done LOL LOVING your box windows, they are absolutely beautiful and the beams just set them off! ♥

I love hearing Romeo working along with you in the background. Even though it’s a home for both of you, the renovation approach is just such YOUR undertaking and he seems so supportive and excited for every stage with you, no matter how long it takes🥰 ugh I just love it
Keep in mind with spices, that when they’re exposed to light, natural or electrical, they will lose their potency and color.
I have mine on little shelves above our stove and the rich colors fade because of the light above the stove.
I’ve been looking for so long for amber colored glass to prevent this but they just don’t make them for typical spice bottles! :(

Just an idea, since your windows are so deep You could have also used a staircase plank, instead of that poplar plank for your boxed window “shelf”. It would have had a beautiful bullnose edge instead and they have some really nice hardwood options. It’s beautiful though! I enjoy your content!
I love the boxed windows, nothing like a deep sill for plants! I wanted to build in some shelves either side of my fire place, I used 100% scrap wood. I am proud that I got a great look for nothing but my labor, it’s so satisfying.

And 100% as someone who overthinks everything, I would have absolutely mitred those beams to get the perfect seam - it looks beautiful! 💛🌙🌟✨
You should make a pull out spice drawer or storage for additional pans,trays or cutting boards in that nook in the island to maximise space and minimise clutter on the bench! Would be super cool to see you make something like that!
I lowkey find it really brave of you to share your moodboards with us. I find it a way too personal thing to show mine to people because it represents the inner workings of my mind and I'm more comfortable keeping it private just for me to see. But I love having a peek at how your mind works and having some insight on the internal theoretical side of your projects before seeing the practical parts of how they unfold

Oh my goodness, what a difference trim makes to a space. You did an amazing job on everything. The beams are just what the space needed.
