Porch looks great. When you level the ground for your landscaping make sure you keep a slight slant in order to run rainwater AWAY from the house. It amazes me how many professionals don't do that and you wind up with water sitting against your foundation.

Hard to tell after putting that beautifully mitered waterfall, but if those posts are structural holding up beam, they need to sit directly over a 4x4 post sitting on cement pad set below frost line. The weight being distributed holding roof needs to properly run from beam down to the foundation that won't sag or expand/ contract. Porch turned out esthetically gorgeous, but is it engineered properly? Love your content 😻

@@shayna8324 yes I saw those blocks that hold 4x4s that the deck is resting on, but can't tell if they're on a frost heave cement pad and then couldn't see if posts were over the top of 4x4 to have the point load over said foundation. Since the roof is tied to the house, the structural beam should also be on foundation, so the posts can't shift/flex independently. Only looking out for the porch to last another 100 yrs 😹

I think a trim piece where the two boards meet to waterfall is a good idea for both function and aesthetics. Are you going to put up a bead board ceiling over your porch? That is very common in the South (east of the Mississippi at least), and painted "haint" blue.

For the back platform, if you use some of the bricks leftover from the chimney to build out the sides you can have a slightly larger plat form which is really nice for decorations and plants. Plus the combined matching decking and stonework will tie together the outside the house. With added space you can install similar posts to the back overhang

Just a thought---we live in the south and we had a heck of a time with wasps building nests on the ceiling of the porches of our 85 year old house. I got the idea from a visit to Key West that if you paint the porch ceiling sky blue the bugs will think it's the sky and not build the nests. Though very skeptical, I've had our ceilings painted for a few years now and darn if it doesn't work! Not one. I used Pool Blue by SW. I wasn't sure if I could stand the ceiling being blue but it's charming. Love what you two have done so far--very beautiful. It's great to see you and Romeo work together so well. So sweet together. Wishing you the best.

Hey! My wife loves your videos and I watch them her all the time!
I couldn’t help but ponder why those screws were stripping…I noticed you were not using pilot holes and you are using a (potentially) under powered driver. As you are driving into the wood the drill is having to work harder and harder which can lead to stripping screw heads. Just a thought hope that helps!

Your porch looks AMAZING!!!! Just a tip….You need a impact driver for those deck screws! You won’t strip them as easily if you use a driver. The driver has more torque which will be much easier to drive those screws in. Also a drill spins faster and is primarily made only to drill holes. Therefore using a drill on screws strips them really easy.

Stunning! I wanted to say I heard at the end you wanted to level out the ground? Just double check that you have the right slope around the house since you need a gradual slope away from the house to help water stay away from the house foundation. We bought a house two years ago and the home inspector told us we needed to fix the grading around the house with the slope in some areas. Usually it’s a drop of one inch per foot that you move away from the house for the first 10 feet around the house.

I am so inspired by your ‘can do’ attitude and I am constantly amazed at your ability to learn new skills and do EVERYTHING yourself! You are definitely an inspiration to young women everywhere!
One comment/suggestion when it comes to your stain choices…I wish you would venture away from the big box solid colour stain that you seem to choose for some of your wood projects. I think your door could have been even more beautiful and really shone if the appropriate wood stain had been chosen…the right stain for the job would have brought out the natural character and enhanced the door’s beauty.

Very smart to move the 2 post slightly further a part! It totally made the front door entryway look bigger and highlights the lighting. You are so smart!!

Love how the porch deck came out. I’ve never seen that waterfall effect before but I did have concerns about water getting into the lower boards and the rough edges splintering

The boards are composite so water can’t “get into them” but I do agree with her that the edge should be capped even tho it kills the look a bit.

You two work so well together. Loved it MaCenna! You have learned so much working on your home.
But I have some concerns about your deck framing. I just built my own deck, so I've been fully immersed in that construction.
I don't think you posts are properly supported, which means your roof isn't. And the joists you added are not supported where they join (there must be a post or a beam there). I sent you a message on Instagram, I hope the info will help.

    • @Edu_Kate
      @Edu_Kate Před 2 lety

I didn't notice those metal joist hangers and wondered how secure the framework is without them.
I've been following Matthew Cremona's channel and he complains (jokingly) that his contractor make him screw in all of them. There are a lot of hangers on his home remodel.

One of the main things I admire about you is that you do so much of the work yourself. I love watching you teach yourself a new skill then get better and better at it. I think you’re one of the hardest working DIY/home decor people on CZcams. And it pays off because you can make things the way you want rather than settling for what someone else is willing to do. You can be a perfectionist without hassling other people. The front porch is a great example of that with the waterfall sides and the way you shifted the posts from your original plan (great decision!).
Question re: stripping the special screws - would a pilot hole have helped?
