- The Siamang is a tailless, arboreal, black furred gibbon native to the forests of Malaysia, Thailand, and Sumatra. The largest of the lesser apes, the Siamang can be twice the size of other gibbons, reaching 1 m in height, and weighing up to 14 kg.
The Siamang is distinctive for two reasons. The first is that two fingers on each hand are fused together. The second is the large "gular sac" (found in both male and female of the species), which is a throat pouch that can be inflated to the size of its head, allowing the Siamang to make loud resonating calls or songs.

This totally brings me back to my childhood. I was living in a town next to a Sumatra's Bukit Barisan Forest. Every morning we could heard the Siamang the forest, they're miles away but we still can hear them
Sometimes, my friends and i, when exploring the hills near the town, we often stopped just to listen then imitate them. It was a fantastic time for me
I'm not living in the town anymore, but once a year i usually go back to visit my parent. Now it's hard to heard any Siamang singing, the forest had turned into a palm oil plantation. I've tried to explored the same hills we used to go, but nothing i can hear

In my humble opinion there is beauty in this. They are not howling, they are singing...
We naturally think about vocal cord development when considering the capabilities for vocalization in an animal, but this reminds us how lung volume and the ability to control the exhalation of air must also have a lot to do with vocalization as well.
Thats how wind instruments work, you control the air flow with your lips and it changes the pitch, while holding down the keys

i just found out today at the zoo that Siamang are code red if they escape they're in league with tigers and lions....they can actually rip a humans arms clean off. Makes looking at them totally uncomfortable now

I am enjoy that sound every morning & afternoon in my town. Kerinci Sumatera Indonesia (the siamang natural wild habitat). The Siamangs are very adorable animal. The Forest fire in my country especially Sumatera & Kalimantan island is really really make Siamang & Orangutan threatened. I am worry about that.

The siamang gibbon is the "Sound of the Jungle" to me growing up. Every game or anything that depicted a jungle had that gibbon Great Call play somewhere to let you know it was a jungle.

Very cool, I just love to watch some relatives swinging around in our own first environment, the canopy. It really gets more 'sapient like' if you find a bunch of Bonobos peacefully going about their daily interactions. When I used to think about reincarnation, I immediately thought of Bonobos, wonder why hahaha.
