- And just like that... in the season one finale of their revival, the ladies of Sex and the City came home to themselves after a long time away.
The final episode shows Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte returning to themselves and rediscovering their mojos in exciting ways that hint at how much story there is left to discover.

Another issue with Miranda, is that they turned her into the thing she hates the most. A cheater. Not to mention, how her drinking problem was solved
Right! She was so disappointed with Carrie when she cheated on aiden and absolutely DESTROYED when steve cheated on her yet NO ONE brings that up???? That made her character selfish and obnoxious when her growth in the original series was about letting go of your selfish and avoidant tendencies for real love and family. In AJLT her character becomes worse than the Miranda we see in season 1 of SATC
The screwed her character, while they redeemed Charlotte, in a way. The letter stayed true to her character, but in a better way, while the former was decharacterized, almost completely.
Yes! After the non-alcoholic wine picnic Miranda's drinking was never metnioned again. Not even a line like "Oh my god, I think I am in love with Che! I need a drink - but I am not drinking anymore. F***!" or something like that. That is just poor writing.
Can't believe her so called drinking problem was even seen as a problem. They drank constantly in their 30s when life was so good for all of them now they hit the bottle when life is shit and all of a sudden she's an alcopop? They got drunk on cosmos before noon in season 2 when big was having his engagement brunch at the Plaza and that was OK?!
That’s the one thing I like they addressed; Miranda’s drinking problem which was developing in the main series. I’m nit sure how they “fixed” it in the new series though since I haven’t seen it.
The worst thing is that it looks like they didnt understand what made SATC so popular. Real friendship and style.

This really pinpoints Miranda's issues - she comes off as if she's digressed to the person she was before she became confident in SATC and we met her.
Miranda doesn't exist in the new show -- Cynthia Nixon decided that she wanted to play herself, so she just did everything that Cynthia Nixon would do (including sleeping with some awful, unlikable non-binary person because Cynthia Nixon doesn't want to do intimate scenes with men anymore). That's the problem -- they threw Miranda in the trash and gave us "whatever Cynthia Nixon feels like doing today"

And if they were determined to do that, have STEVE be the one to die... preferably offscreen, so we can have it that she's grieved & starting to get back into thinking about dating. It would have made perfect sense for Carrie & Big to divorce. Heck, if you start the series with Steve already dead, you can still have Big die in the first episode. Then you have some more interesting dynamics to play with the Carrie/Miranda friendship, too.
She was actually pretty insecure the whole time,just as insecure as the other women,but projected it in a different way. Her marriage and being a mother helped her be vulnerable and actually acknowledge her insecurities this time around instead of projecting it on friends or love interests. I think Miranda this season makes sense.
The biggest mistake is that they FORGOT mayor plot points from the original series, especially with Miranda, they even act like she never even had decent sex in her life for gods sake!
tbh Steve and Miranda always had these problems, Steve wants to chill and is content with that, Miranda wants to be on the move and structure in her time, then they grow distant and sex dies out. and if youre starving even a biscuit is gonna taste like the best thing you ever tried probably.

She’s was literally uptight and anal about everything, he showed her it’s okay to lay in bed and relax that was the point of their relationship! They had incredible sex and he helped her grow into a balanced person, the movie goes completely against this show because Steve loved and needed sex. He cheats and it destroys them but they overcome it and continue growing…. Only for Miranda to turn around and cheat…? Makes no sense.
@@AllieBee00 I dont remember a single scene where Steve showed Miranda its ok to just lay around and just relax. It was often the start of their fights, from Miranda feeling like she was Steves mom, to her spending their entire honeymoon stressing out and trying to find excuses why they should go back cause she was losing her mind with Steves idea of just relaxing all day for only 4 days. And this was regularly followed by Miranda feeling guilty about not being able to enjoy these things and ruining them for Steve.
I do agree on the second part where this show treats Steves lack of interest in sex as a given out of no where. It would make sense they could fall into the same pattern of an unhappy marriage again since and im a bit hazy about the movie, so i might be wrong, but they never really worked through the base line of their problems, they mostly worked on regaining trust but not much on the issues that got them there in the first place. But not like this and not with Steves sudden character 180.
@@BambiLena666 it’s literally the front runner in one where they’re both lying in bed and she’s ready to go and start the day early because she had to do everything a certain way when he urges her to just lay in bed with him for a few extra minutes. And finally towards the end Miranda does so and actually enjoys it. I just watched the show recently so I remember this completely. And honestly yes she did feel like a mom sometimes I interpret but it was a lot of perfectionism meeting the laid back.
When they were talking about the worst breakups ever, Carrie mentioned her husband died instead of telling about the post it break up with burger:D
Kim Cattrall DEFINITELY made the right decision to dodge this train wreck. "How I met your Father" is a better deal, and the weak way they wrote out Samantha is just appalling, and makes no sense for her character.
Kim agreed to do the second movie, her window to bow out gracefully has long passed.

@@bonniehowell9206 Exactly! If anything, Carrie is still in debt to her. Besides, Samantha's feelings about money were so relaxed. One of my favorites: "It's just money. Man, woman, who cares? It's fluid. Someone needs it, you give it. You need it, you take it." That's not the kind of woman who would end a lifelong friendship over money.
I just don’t know why they made the kids so unlikable and entitled. And Mirander catching feelings & chasing Che Diaz around, reminded me of Carrie’s early days with Big.

I agree with Charlotte that Miranda's change in character is a legit midlife crisis, it happens! If you know someone who's gone through one, their behavior can literally be unrecognizable. That being said, this is a fictional character that people grew to love and admire and it definitely tarnishes the legacy of the show and what she stood for metaphorically within the series.
It would have been so much better if her change was challenged more or if her friends would have outright told her she's in a midlife crisis. For the most part everyone just shrugs and lets her get on with crashing her entire life for a folly.
Totally. Although Miranda has never really had strong emotional intelligence either though. And she’s always been about maintaining control and when she feels out of control this would be her midlife crisis response. :)
Yes! She's gone through some major life changes too - quitting her job and going back to school, her child is a young adult and needs her less now, she's questioning her sexuality. It makes sense for someone in her situation to question her choices up to this point (especially if they haven't made her very happy), and act the way she did in AJLT. It IS hard to watch though, because she was my fave from the original series!
No one buys it and frankly the development just was not plausible despite the midlife crisis notions. There were several other things she could have done that would had fit the arc of character and still been jolting. The white wig was ludicrous enough.
Miranda is literally the only character having sex in the series. And you want to shame her for that? C’mon. People fall out of love.

I don't mind Miranda discovering a new sexual identity, it was her lack of compassion for her long term spouse (regardless of gender identity) Not being sexually attracted to someone isn't an excuse for cruelty. I also think they lost out on a complex, bittersweet reality of divorce and growing apart. Breaking up is hard, even if it's for the best. Miranda just ran to Che and didn't even have to decency to feel sympathy for Steve. It was mean and I don't like them representing sexual awaking as callous.
Also, alcoholism is difficult to treat so Miranda being cured in 2 seconds was disappointing. Also, also others have compared Che to Big and I totally agree. Carrie didn't listen and neither will Miranda... the promotion of toxic pairings is a bit troublesome but that's always been a thing in this show. Except Harry and Charlotte, they are the best.
Steve's deafness was handled poorly too. It's weird because the storylines based on the actors' real life experiences were the worst...

I watched the first movie last night and the part where she refused to forgive Steve for making a mistake made it even worse knowing how she handles her wanting the divorce. I felt so terribly for Steve, it felt like he had wasted decades of his life on someone who never truly cared as much as she claimed to.
100% AGREE! It makes her character hateful and narcissistic! I miss Miranda's unapologeticness (if that's a thing?) Miranda comes off as Aunt Pitty-Pat from "Gone With the Wind" not the strong independant woman we've come to know.
I don’t have a problem with Miranda’s sexual identity however I think that her and che really didn’t work on screen. Che and Miranda had no screen chemistry at all and I found Che to be annoying in general.

Not sure how this is going to sound, but as a 25 year old struggling with the same issues as the women in the show, I found it a little depressing, because it shows that I could STILL be grappling with the SAME issues another 25 years in the future.
For REAL. Sounds exhausting. I know there's no age where you'll have every single thing together and be the perfect adult, but I hope life is at least a little calmer by then damn
Nah. They are white rich educated people, who do not seem to understand, what life is truly about. They have no real problems, so they are creating problems. Dobt worry, if you focus on you and important things that matter, not bull s hit around it, then you will be happy and will not meed to waste your time and energy on such issues for another 25years.

But you may well not still be. Really, it's very possible you will reach a place of stability in everyday life, and become a person better equipped to handle crisises than you may currently be.

People who put dedicated consistent effort into mental and emotional healing (part of which usually involves finding a good fit with a therapist to assist with this) usually don't end up struggling with issues at nearly the same intensity 20, 30, 40 years later.
For sure flashbacks happen and triggers are sometimes unavoidable. But a lot of times you see people dealing with crap in their later years because they were unable (lack of safe space, no physical or emotional energy and/or lack of a helpful support-network) or more often because *they were unwilling* to face their trauma or issues earlier in life.

This was demonstrated to me by two generations of my large close and extended family. It definitely made an impression.

I had a lot of early-life and longterm trauma of many kinds, from multiple sources. But I was fortunate to get to a place in life relatively early (starting just before my 30's began) where I was safe enough to begin processing and healing, and am already very much not the person I was before in terms of trauma reactions and even regular socializing. And the more I sort through, the more gets the door properly and healthily mentally closed on it, which frees up another bit of energy to devote elsewhere in my life.

How I wish that Samantha would have her own spinoff. She is living in Europe escaping from that toxic relationship. There have been countless of times Samantha was degraded by her circle of fake friends. Samantha was the most loyal and she always has her friends backs. In the original when Samantha was dating another woman, she was judged & mocked by all her friends including Miranda. Steve had an affair in the original and Miranda was so called hurt. Suddenly now Miranda is in a relationship with Chey! She cheats on Steve with Chey. The irony!!!! 🤨😒🙄🤔😏

I was very surprised when Miranda looked shocked that Charlotte still "blows" Hanry. Ok, she clearly lost the spark with Steve, but considering how she gives full responsability to him I think a better response to that would be jealosy, not scandal. And I mean, It's SATC characters we are talking about. They have spoken about sex for years, and now they all act as prude teenagers. Poor Steve, he probably even forgot how a blow feels.

God I feel this. There actually WAS a beautiful message in the idea that Steve didn't need to be, like, some GREAT guy with huge job, super hot, etc. He was nice, human, and cares for her.
She's exploring her sexuality now and found someone new? Fine. I accept they're over. But show me the struggles of, even if there's someone new, finishing stuff with someone who has been your partner for years.... this easy discarded plotline was so disrespectful....

Not to mention Steve not being and not having any desire to be sexually active in his 50s is kinda weird.

He'd always been there for her, always fought for their relationship when they had problems, was kind to her friends, was a great dad. I understand sometimes relationships end. But for her to be so gleeful about leaving him heartbroken didn't ring true at all, and it made me really dislike Miranda. Couldn't we have seen her shed at least one tear for the dear man she was leaving behind?

The thing that bothered me most about Miranda is that she was such a jerk about Carrie changing her opinion on the afterlife and then in the same episode yelling that she’s allowed to change and move to California. Like yeah Miranda we’re all allowed to change and it’s nice of our friends weren’t dicks about it.
In terms of Steve I always liked him and I thought the show did a disservice, I’d have preferred if they’d made Steve at a point where he’s over sex and so they open their marriage and he’s ok with Miranda having other relationships with women. But I could get over this if Steve was given more resolution or some happiness at all.
Season 2 is yet to arrive.
The final scene of And Just Like That should have been MPK sitting in Central Park playing with three dollies (blonde, redhead, brunette) and revealed the whole show was his daydream.

My main disappointment was that the characters of color were not developed besides just shepherding the white cast to understanding “wokeness”. I mean yes they were supporting characters, but considering how much flack the show got back in its heyday for not having enough color. I would’ve thought they would’ve done a little more with them besides meet a quota.

It never needed us. I don't know who even asked for a show, spearheaded by white women, to include US. This is where we go wrong. We ask to be "token" characters in a show clearly written for the White audience. Then, we have to wait to get it down the line, and it ends up feeling forced and underdeveloped because the leads have already made their mark on the show enough to be the main focus instead of the characters of color they shove in. I'm glad to have Insecure, four BLACK friends and Living Single. I don't need SATC to have my face on it (which I know would feel awkward) and I think we need to stop asking for old all-white stuff to include us and need to start looking for shows that already do or new shows that involve us in this same fashion.

I feel like this show is yet another checkmark on the Nostalgia Bait list that so many studios are exploiting lately. I don't feel like this is a show designed to bring in new viewers who had never seen SatC, but rather is relying too much on viewers knowing who these characters were and wanting to know how they turned out. Hence why critics don't really like it, but the viewership shows high numbers: it's being watched by people who loved the original show and who associate it with their own younger selves.

@@mwoods4608 Good point, there does also seem to be a big market for hate-watching. Maybe it's a combination of the two. Hate-watching which inspires more nostalgia for the original, creates more desire for a 'better version', which allows for more Nostalgia Bait content. We're all expected to be married off and raising children by now. Maybe that will change as time goes on.

My issue with AJLT is a lot of character assassination with some of the girls. Mainly with Miranda, I was shocked that she would cheat on Steve after she hated him cheating on her.
As much criticism the show has had, it’s still nice to see a modern day tv show with older women at the center of it.

Women in their 50’s are not OLDER WOMEN. There are a lot of movies and tv shows with woman on their middle ages. The thing is we are watching women who we grew up with, and THAT element could have bring comfort to a lot of us… which it didn’t btw.

SATC was loved and became iconic because of the characters, you can't just change the CORE of the series just for the sake of checking the box. It was like an article came to life, and Carrie narrating it was like a friend telling a great, funny story that you can relate to, and for fashion, it will come and go. They could have just made another series instead of a sequel. and oh BTW, I totally agree, FINGER CHE is the worst character, I think she's a great actress but her, trying to look like Justin Bieber with those corny jokes? ugh...No Thanks

Both Kristin Davis & the writers have done so much justice to Charlotte, she is my favourite character now, as the arc of her development went from arrogant privilege to evolution & empowerment. Even though Cynthia Nixon is such a great actress & I feel for Miranda, writers could do her a bit better. I do like whenever she let in the weakness of being emotional then & now, so there is a powerful arc of her changing, letting herself feel things fully. It’s possible that our culture is still not equipped for that kind of change?
Totally agree! Charlotte stayed the truest to her character in the original series. Going above and beyond to be a good mother and friend and care for the people who she loves, even when that challenges her more traditional tendencies. I think her confusion and struggle, but core acceptance of Rock's identity is so true to her character and also pretty realistic.

The reboot was not good. Weak story structure, dozens of forgotten plot points, a mix between caricature and out of character, and cringe just for the sake of being cringe. There was so much potential to take these characters through grief, aging with teen children, navigating your mental health in a dying marriage, etc., but it didn’t go anywhere beyond surface level. In the documentary they seem to care more about the fashion and what Carrie is wearing over anything else. It shows this was a poorly planned out reboot with no soul, and most SATC fans can see that. The people behind this are so full of themselves and out of touch. I’m not falling for the emperor with no clothes here. This show is not good.

@@khal7982 Yeah, I heard about that in another comment but why did they have that in story explanation by the interviewers explaining why Big was killed? Why couldn't they just admit that Chris Noth was charged with sexual assault, so they couldn't have him on the show anymore? Though can I just point out how strange it is that Big, the one who's shown himself as untrustworthy, is the one who only leaves in death while Samantha and Stamford, two loyal friends of Carrie's, are the ones who abandon her for their careers?
I really wanted to like this show but to me they contradicted Miranda’s character completely just to I guess be woke or inclusive or something. In the original show, Miranda wanted to try being with a woman when her firm thought she was a lesbian. She went to dinner and what and even tried kissing the woman only to find out, she wasn’t gay and couldn’t pretend to be. So to randomly have her enter into a relationship like that because her marriage is dull, doesn’t really add up as a character.
That's not how it works though.
She wasn't into that one women, doesn't mean she can't be into another one.
It's a no for me on Miranda! She cheats on Steve when he arguably needs her the most and decides to just up and leave! Like do we not all remember how she treated Steve when he cheated! (It was deserved btw) but knowing that pain, how could she ever to that to someone else! Just no.
And she didn't even have an ounce of remorse about it!

They could've at least thrown in a hint of her maybe subconsciously never truly forgiving his cheating and secretly (so secret that even she didn't realize, or at least, she didn't *want* to realize that she) wanted some revenge on him. It could've touched on how not being honest with yourself, or simply not talking about problems, always comes back to bite you / a relationship sooner or later.
I’ve become increasingly annoyed whenever old properties get brought back, and then the writers have established characters act completely out of character. With the excuse being “well it’s been a lot of time, of course they’d be different.”
This is a fictional narrative, you still have to EARN the change and sell people on it being believable. You need to show and justify the progression, not just use “oh time has passed” as a cheap way out.
Many creators seem to forget this these days.

Charlotte has always been my favorite character and still is. Of course she would be put off and confused that her daughter is no longer identifying as one but she is still so supportive. She calls out her friends when it’s appropriate and even though its a little judgmental she apologizes and rolls with the punches, and supports them even if she doesn’t understand it.
But at 18:00 Miranda is incredibly rude and obnoxious to her grieving friend. Way out of character and wrong.
I kinda wish Miranda was the one who ended up with a law advice podcast-like legal eagle.
I am really tired of hollywood constantly pushing this narrative that it’s not cool or romantic to ask before kissing…ive seen that now from multiple movies and tv shows. I WANT someone to ask me before they kiss me. I had someone do that before it was beautiful. I’ve seen so many consent jokes lately and it’s gross. I find it sexy if someone asks me, it shows they respect me and they’re a safe person.
Agreed, and playing it funny with something so forward as “do you wanna make out” gives agency to both parties and it feels more exciting than a bunch of nonverbal cue giving, getting and confusion.
Miranda HATES cheaters yet didn’t give a second thought to her entire family when she cheats with Che (a person she doesn’t even know, she just idolizes them) She was so disappointed with Carrie when she cheated on aiden and absolutely DESTROYED when steve cheated on her yet NO ONE brings that up???? That made her character selfish and obnoxious when her growth in the original series was about letting go of your selfish and avoidant tendencies for real love and family. In AJLT her character becomes worse than the Miranda we see in season 1 of SATC
They should have started the season with all of them at the airport saying goodbye to Samantha, waving at the plane... She could have moved right then and there. Not made it seem like the friendship had drama. Then she couldn't return for the funeral because of Covid. Simple storyline.

I was never even a Samantha, but I'm realizing how much confidence I had to lose -- now that I've lost it! Haha... ha... yeah. Getting older, my poorer health, and for real having harder water in my current home, have remade me into someone I don't always recognize. Or quite like... *sadface*

Growing up is all about realizing that you're a Miranda, not Samantha.
I am glad that this take on the show shows its "rights" along with its "wrongs". It's refreshing. Everyone screams about how bad it is and yet keeps watching. The fans have simply missed the show and the characters. Therefore, are watching and most will still be watching no matter the cringe. Of course the revival isn't doing great justice to the original series but I for am still curious what the characters will do. Hope they take the criticism, good and bad, and make a new and better season.
You know, one of the things that made the show feel so unreal was the fact that there's no prejudice in it. Even if it's just comments like when Samantha dated Maria in SATC. It would be interesting to have Miranda really come out to her family and have her son (who had a friendly moment with Che at Big's funeral) having a hard time accepting not only her sexuality but her unfaithfulness to Steve. They also could have added a moment where Charlotte defends Rock from a transphobic comment by one of the women from their mom group. Unfortunately, the whole show is a "woke moment" and it gets really cringey at times.
I strongly agree with you. The show had a way to make you expect difficulties that would eventually never show up (something the 2nd movie did too, to be fair) : the most obvious example is Miranda telling Steve she met someone, after making him feel almost guilty for having become boring.
I mean, what could his reaction have been? He got cheated on, and his wife is making excuses to make it understandable, something old Miranda would really have loathed by the way : the whole challenge in that conversation was to know what would happen afterward, but the authors deprived the audience of it.
As far as I'm concerned, I think the series is better left in the 90s-2000s, with the 1st movie being at best a guilty pleasure of seeing the girls back for one last time (and the Miranda and Samantha storylines were not so bad, because they were challenging) : the 2nd movie was a big mistake, and AJLT just happens in a parallel universe, best case scenario!
This a thousand times! We didn't even get a single word between Brady and Miranda regarding her leaving Steve for another woman. Is he ok with that? Does he even know?
The show is an utter mess that tried to tick too many woke checkboxes but never dived deep into any of them for fear of "insulting" someone.
They had plenty of cringe prejudice moments though it came from the older women and not the younger people. I think that if you feel it's unrealistic to show Brady as not taking issue with his mom's sexuality it's because you're looking it from your own perspective and not the perspective of today's youths who live in more liberal-minded areas. I'm 35 and progressive yet I am continuously shocked by how more free and liberal kids are today. The kids on AJLT were growing up during Me Too and America's Woke Era so they have a much different way of looking at things than we do.

Having a gay parent is like having a gay kid : people might be cool with it hypothetically, but unless you've been suspecting it for a long time, it always requires at least some adjustment when it becomes a reality for them. And that's what the audience would like to see : flawed, imperfect, fleshed out people, reacting differently, some in a good way, some in a bad way, some unexpectedly, to what should be considered a big change in their lives. Parents separating is always big for kids (and even adults), but having your mom come out in front of that should not have been taken aside. (For the record my own parents were great. Still, they had discussed about it between themselves before, and my mother had asked me questions very carefully, because this is how real life goes. - and I got lucky.)
@@brandnewman9870 I totally get what you're saying and I would expect most people in general to have to adjust to their parents suddenly being gay. But what I'm trying to convey is that younger people are surprisingly different in the way they view homosexuality, gender identity, etc. Most of the kids I'm around today have attended same sex weddings and haven't spent a lot of time around unchecked homophobic attitudes the way Gen X's+ have. I've had small children look at me like I'm from a different planet when I've blurted out things that made it sound like homosexuality was anything less than normal and I've always been pro gay! Considering the kids from AJLT live in the city and grew up during the cultural shift and all. In many ways, the show was a bit of a reflection on my own experience as a a Gen X'er around youths today; I find myself being constantly corrected for my backwards ways by teens and even children. I think a lot of adults who are becoming parents or are parents of small children are in for the same big surprise. I am finding that a lot of young people do believe in sexuality and gender being fluid and just aren't taken back by it. And if they see that as a normal, there's a strong possibility that although a parents divorce will be upsetting, many would think very little if at all about a change in sexual orientation. The times really are changing.
If you’ve got a legendary show that ended 20 years prior. And want to bring it back you should only do it if all the original stars are willing to reprise their roles. If one of them can’t or won’t come back better to just reboot the show.

Sooo many missed opportunities. Carrie is allegedly this fashion girl. Sustainable fashion is the thing due to climate change yet we never saw her mention secondhand shopping or even saw her swiping through Vestiaire collective or Grailed. No mention of Aleks. No mention of Magda. Stan was literally fucking DYING in real life yet the last time we saw him, he was getting a damn door smacked against his chair repeatedly. They didn’t even mention him again after he fled to Japan!
I think the worst offense however is that the whole damn show is officially all about BIG. what did he do to deserve such a godlike status on this show? I love your point about sustainable fashion. Classic style and the expensive brands she buys should last her for years and we barley saw glimpses of her old wardrobe let alone her wearing any of the pieces. Also I was distraught over the way they portrayed Standford, he divulged himself to Carrie and then he just leaves? The writers could of done the texting thing w/ Standford the way they had Carrie text Samantha. I agree with your thoughts about Big. I loved the show based on the friendships just like I love the friendships in Sailor Moon, because your friends matter they will be with you. If you find love it just added to your life. I loved in SATC we saw them workout, go to galleries, eat casually (not always dolled up), dress well, and shoot the shit. That’s what it’s like to have girlfriends and that is what I strived for in my life. I was lucky to find love and all my friends think we are a good match which adds to my life. I was disappointed in this new series it just revolves around Carrie and those 2 were at her side at her beckon call.
I love these characters, so I watched. But it was so painful to watch these storylines. I liked the final episode and I hope season 2 is more like that. But Che has to go.

What’s most sad about the change to Miranda’s character was the missed opportunity to call out some of the woke sexual politics on display. Original Miranda (OM) had the perfect combination of liberal credentials, no-BS attitude and real word sexual/relationship experience to do that. Original Miranda - as a 50-something woman with plenty of real-life sexual experience - would have been awesome at challenging some of the more rigid sexual politics of the 2020s and the ways they don’t always match the realities of gender, sexual attraction and sexual practice once the lights go out. Original Miranda would have rolled her eyes at the 20-somethings obsessed with pronouns and consent contracts before kissing - instead it’s the other way around. I’m not saying that Original Miranda should have always had the final word. She could have been wrong about some things and that would have been OK. But it would have made for a more thoughtful, interesting show if we had our old Miranda back.

Same here. When Carrie introduced the name of her new podcast, I may have gotten choked up lol.
I have the feeling that part of the criticism is based on how sure of herself, confident, and independent Miranda was, but truth be told that is not 100% accurate. She always had this layer of insecurity and second-guessing herself, even tho she always try to put a facade. I think she struggled a lot with feminist guilt. In addition, she was always a little awkward in the face of strong feelings. I don't see these reactions in the new season as out of her personality as everyone seems to put it. Some people say it's a midlife crisis. I do think this is how it would look for her, and it is good to show that because many people go through it IRL.
That could be a decent move (though probably still unpopular), if that is what's actually happening. I guess only time will tell if we really are seeing a confident facade that later breaks down and reveals underlying insecurity, or just bad writing.

I think there's value in showing that even the smartest, most confident women can become insecure and needy when experiencing intense feelings that are not entirely reciprocated. When it happens to you it's easy to think that you are in fact that insecure person and forget all about who actually are and your real worth so I'm not mad at showing Miranda more vulnerable as she's facing a rush of feelings she doesn't quite know how to handle.
I would rate it a 4 out of 10. it was such a confused mess with so many dropped plot points and They did Steve and Miranda so dirty. I think they would have been better to have an overarching focus for each of the characters that was MUCH more central. For examole Carrie is in grief over Big, I was hoping that she would reaexamine their relationship and realize how toxic and abusive it had been, even if they just focus on the grief that would be better than what we go, she suddenly writes a book in one episode and its dropped, she suddenly makes friends with a younger girl in her appt for two epsidoes and its dropped, she getsa new appt for an episode its dropped... like what are we doing?
For the last few years, I swear, all sorts of media I've followed has felt rushed to publication / premiere / presentation etc. way too soon. They always end up feeling like they "went into print" as it were before going through that vital final round(s) of editing. And we end up getting this sloppy, uneven, unfinished product that's not even half of what we hoped for and the quality's less than we were made to expect (and far lesser than it was last time) and it's all just such a let-down!
I have to dedicate a whole post to Miranda.
I hated what the writing did with her character.
First, I understand how Cynthia Nixon is gay in real life so her relationship with Che makes sense in that regard. She wants to play gay characters.
However, I hate this trope where a character (mainly women) identify as straight throughout the entire show without any instances of them being attracted to the same sex. Than, after one bad relationship with a guy, the straight person goes, oh here is this women. I am gay now. The reason why I hate thus trope is because it makes it hyper sexualize gay women more and make it seem it is easy to convert straight women into gay women. If gay people don’t want to be converted, why try with people who identify as straight. Just to be clear, it is not the relationships or the sexualitiesI have an issue with. It is the trope.
I knew Miranda was always judgmental of people, but I did not think she was hypocritical. This is where the writing She spent the entire first film being mad at Steve for breaking a vow and their trust when he cheated. Fine, understandable. However, in the show, she was perfectly fine not thinking about steve ever when she kept cheating on him with Che. Like what the heck?
Also, it did not feel like Miranda to have sex in her best friend’s house when she was recovering. Poor Carrie. That was excruciating to watch. I would have been pissed if that happened to me.
So for me, it was the writing if her character that made me mad than the character herself.
I liked how they tackled her drinking problem, but it still feel like it resolved quickly.

They resolved it way too quickly. I am with you on that. Oh wait, it wasn’t the orgasm. It was the book she ordered when she was drunk. She felt judged by it. But even so, I agree, alcoholism does not get fixed like that.
I should have explained. In the beginning, I liked how they set it up with her day drinking and Charlotte putting the pieces together. It also correlated with her unhappiness in the story. Her being unhappy led to her drinking more. I just din’t like how they ended it and made it seem it was never there afterwards. I think they realized they did not have enough time to tackle it all the way through.
I will change my wording. I liked how they set it up, but the tackling of it, the execution was bad.
The one thing that makes the original SATC so unmatchable is the flavour if individuality each one if the 4 girls bring to the table. While I havent seen the Reunion yet, I feel the charm from the original one cannot be replicated. Plus the writing was very classy.
Their friendship was always the most important thing to me which is why I grudgingly watched the entire new show. If they come back, they need to bring them back to center.
Miranda has been married to Steve forever. Women can lose themselves in marriage and motherhood. Their autonomy no longer exists because they are now wives and mothers. Not to mention, she hasn't dated since Steve and she's never dated a woman. Would that not make her insecure and uncertain? She is undergoing a major life change and trying to find who she is now.

As I see more clips, I agree that it did some things right. It seemed to have some of the verbal wit of SATC that a lot of ppl didn't mention. Apart from that, it destroyed these characters. I also haven't seen these "high" viewership numbers that HBO keeps claiming. I've seen them for "euphoria", tho. It had something like 13 Million viewers for its sn 2 premiere, whereas AJLT just says "up 76%". I'm in my late 40s, and "euphoria" has made me want to get HBO Max more than AJLT ever did.
Just one more show in a never ending cycle of reboots that just prove that reboots never work.

It is not sex and the city anymore!!!! How can people not have reading comprehension??? I’ve been a loyal follower of the series for ages and I’ve been able to get this new phase of these ladies. Yes, there are things that could’ve been told in a different way but what we got made sense… mostly, and that’s an achievement.

Thank you to The Take for bringing up the fact that Miranda tried to guilt Carrie from going to Paris with Petrovsky. I immediately thought of that during the bathroom scene in the last episode. Now, Miranda couldn't seem to handle the backlash guilt that Carrie was laying on her about going to LA with Che. I call that tit for tat.

Being in menopause I can understand how Miranda could become anxious and lose her self assurance etc, I think it shows the reality of mid life, people don’t stay the same and menopause is tough. The first time I watched it felt like it was trying to hard to be woke but watching again and off the back of Sex and the City I think it’s perfect. I actually love Che, I think she’s a great character and I can totally understand Miranda falling for her, she’s fucking hot. I also thought Carrie seemed cold at first after losing Big, I couldn’t relate, having just lost my dad, but watching it again I think she’s amazing, she’s just holding it together and they handled it perfectly. By the end of the season I was hooked, I think it got better as it went on, and re-watching right off the back on binging SATC again it I love it even more! I think it’s exactly how they would be now and I totally relate and it’s great to have a show for us menopausal but still fabulous women ❤
I understand all of the concern around Miranda, but shows sometimes can make characters one-dimensional. What I like about this new Miranda is that it's real. We all have this side built into us. We all had times in life where we were more awkward, or more insecure, and that doesn't mean that Miranda herself is fundamentally changed, it just means that she's going through some things right now. Also, not to mention that she's dealing with complex feelings around abandoning Steve, having these new feelings for Chea that she doesn't completely understand yet, her son and his relationship, and is entering a completely new chapter of her career (where she's starting at the bottom). On the show, we've only ever seen her with women, and now she has real feelings for someone who is non-binary. That's a lot to deal with in process.
Miranda was absolutely the most relatable in this series because she is clearly going through a mid-life crisis. Her work wasn’t satisfying her anymore because she realized she was part of “the system” and wanted to change that. Her marriage hit a rough spot in which she wanted more, but Steve was satisfied. After being straight for 50 years, she was now discovering she is attracted to a non-binary person/someone of the same sex. You wouldn’t be under a lot of stress under these circumstances? You would be your *old* self? She literally doesn’t know the direction her life is taking, now, suddenly, at 50, when she thought she had everything figured out.
PS: People seem to forget that in one of the movies, because they hadn’t had sex in six months, Steve cheated on Miranda. But Miranda is completely dissatisfied with married life and she’s crucified for wanting more on all levels? Double standard

I didn't watch AJLT but someone please explain the scene with Big's death. He has a heart attack and instead of calling ambulance or doing CPR she just hugs him? I saw just a short clip,please tell me she didn't just watched him die
From what I’ve heard, no. She doesn’t call 911 or try to revive him.
The writers wanted/needed to get rid of the actor and didn’t fully commit to the bit, is how it comes across.
Another issue with AJLT is that the writers wrote the characters as caricatures of THEMSELVES by incorporating personal stories that happened to them or people they know.
Also, they make people in their 50s looks so BORING instead of living their best lives.

What I absolutely LOATHE about how they explain Samantha's absence - in the opening of first movie, Carrie acknowledges that her girlfriends' stories were her "meal ticket."
If it wasn't for Samantha, and the others but mostly Samantha, Carrie wouldn't have a column or books or be successful.
I think the whole "she treated me like an ATM" was SJP. I know that once she became a producer she started putting Samantha into ridiculous situations. Because everybody watched for Samantha and not Carrie.
It was an insult to Samantha and the viewers the way SJP/Carrie completely disrespected Samantha like that.
It got practically everything wrong, it wasn’t funny and became a chore to watch. The fashions were horrible as were the storylines. The Wokeness was forced and Steve was given such a raw deal it was painful.

Uh, Kim Cattrall said "thank you, but no" back in 2016. They can save the "we don't want her anymore" to themselves, especially when they used her character for clickbait through the whole revival, especially for the finale.
This was honestly great! The Miranda storyline just felt so out of the ordinary. Honestly the last 5 minutes of the show was good that if they do have a second season I hope that they are able to take the feedback and make it better or bring back some of the old writers of the original show.
I think the writers and HBO gushing about the ratings forget how much we love to watch a train wreck. It’s like we shouldn’t be looking but we can’t look away 🙄. Plus I know so many powerful women in my life enter their 50s /60s even 70s and grow but still at their core not throw away the person they are completely just because they are now older. AJLT flipped everything and everyone just to do it, no real sense or intention behind any of it
Great analysis as always! The whole expression "just like that" is also jarring to me; as if indicating that changes happen out of the blue, without any effort or consciousness of the processes and structures that underlie change.
Mmmmm I think “And just like that “ refers to literal death and when we experience loss of a life partner ones falsely secure world is blown up. Sudden loss in particular takes a unique processing. The older one gets and survives life’s challenges and losses the harder we must climb to reinvent ourselves. No one gets a free pass from tragedy and yes this is a jarring realization.
Miranda was actually always an insecure character and just as insecure as the other women but projected it in a different way. She was always a hard ass who only let certain people see who she was and this season she was fully open and vulnerable to the world and while somewhat cringe she never backed away from uncomfortable situations or let them stop her in anyway,she keeps right on moving!
I have grown old with SATC. Looking at them now gives me the hints that how old I would look to others. And it doesn't look good at all.
What is so maddening is how Mirsnda reacted to Steve's indiscretion in the first movie! It was a major plot point how angry she was and now she does the same and we're supposed to be okay with it! If she didn't go full bitch on Steve in the first movie I'd be fine with Miranda & Che but it left me feeling nothing for the character!
