Samantha Jones was one of the best parts of Sex and the City, who most embodies what the show was supposed to be about. And with the surprising twist that she’s making a (brief) appearance on And Just Like That, we all can’t help but wonder: what if Samantha had been the star of the original show? Thanks to her wit, endlessly interesting storylines, and genuine growth and change, Samantha as a heroine could have pushed Sex and the City (and And Just Like That) to more provocative creative heights.

Samantha was too great of a pal to the other girls, yet hardly received the same treatment. Even though she’s very confident and progressive when it comes to sex in adulthood(especially as a woman), she understood the importance of not Growing up too fast and actually enjoying one’s childhood. How the girls would always cut off Samantha and Carrie being so damn self absorbed, and also how the girls treated Samantha when she was dating a woman. Also yes Carrie always having to make everything about her. I got so annoyed when she had a go at Charlotte for not offering to pay for her apartment when Charlotte had a mature and reasonable response as to why. But also just Carrie constantly putting herself as a glutton for punishment and her over the top dramatics coz things don't go her way or what not, have left me exhausted 😅 granted I'm binging the series, so it may of been less tiresome when episodes were out weekly haha

Carrie was always clingy desperate for love and ultimately gave herself away only to be left with nothing by placing all her idea of a happily ever after on getting the guy instead of finding self fulfillment and joy within herself. Its why she kept going back to Big even though everyone told her he was bad for her, he fed her codependency issues by keeping her at arms lengths and alternating between giving her crumbs to keep her there and love bombing her to win her over when she was either drifting away or with someone else. In the end she was a cautionary tale for toxic and abusive relationships, "When you look at someone through rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags."
That is why Samantha is a true Queen👸🏼 she didnt place the value of herself on finding "the one", SHE was the one for herself and so long she knew that noone could stomp on her self esteem or make her feel unworthy of love, meanwhile the others would get depressed the moment they aknowledged they were single.
I find it ironic that Samantha was judged so hard by the women during that period only for the next generations to give her the vindication by giving her the applause for being the most forward thinking, self assured and confident character in the entire show

I like that they put Samantha in the exact same situation with Richard, and later Smith as an analog of Aiden, to show that everyone has a person who drives them crazy and makes them act out of character, but it is ultimately up to us how to handle it. Both Carrie and Samantha cheated on their stable partner with the guy who drives them out of their mind, but Samantha did it kind of in the open, without playing with Smith's heart, which ultimately led to a completely different result. She learned her lesson and accepted the love of a man who wanted to be her partner in life and got over the bad influence, while Carrie never faced the situation head-on and her character continued to live in a limbo where this situation never got fully resolved and she never fully became her own person again.

She has unabashed confidence, advocates for herself and her friends, is unapologetically herself, encourages her friends to take risks that are in their best interest, is honest and earnest, and actually has a very healthy and open-minded relationship to sex. She IS Sex and the City. Carrie is selfish, whiny and one dimensional. Miranda is stubborn, loyal and her sage advice is always ignored. Charlotte is stuck up, prude and incessantly judgmental. Samantha is Samantha. Samantha is what Carried (😏) SATC.

Samantha is the liberated feminist---successful in her business, hard working, a can-do attitude, clever, resilient, and savvy. She's everything that Carrie is not----Carrie whines constantly; Samantha picks up the pieces and moves on. Ex. When Big stood Carrie up at the wedding (where Carrie had that stupid bird on her head), it's Samantha and Miranda who organize things----get Carrie's apartment back, act as moral support, counsel her, and try to protect her from herself. I don't remember Carrie ever saying "thank you" to the three friends. Samantha is the older, wiser, and sexier woman----the woman Carrie will never be.

I don't believe Carrie was that amazing producer that doesn't know what was all about Samatha's grievances 🙄...it was 100% crazy the direction Samantha's character was taking since Sex in the City 2, no one would have played that character in this day and age the way it was written. It almost feels like they wrote all the outrageous things to do or say for Samantha and let the other characters be all gracious and morally righteous. I think that was fine when it was all in the context of healthy sex exploration (like it was during the series)...but being overly sexual in Muslim countries and being seduced (?) by the son of a friend...nobody can tell me there wasn't some intention to lower the standards for a character so iconic. And the fact that an entire production went against her after that (because with no movie, they wouldn't be working)...she really went through it for no legitimate reason in my opinion.😑

I think personally every woman could use a Samantha in their lives. She wasn't that toxic friend that would steal your man, it's been a minute since I watched the season, but I don't think she ever went after her friends' men, she just loved $3x unapologetically, and she was who she was. I see her as an empowering woman, and no you don't have to be promiscuous like her if it goes against your morals, but she was also a power boss woman, and didn't let people walk all over her because she had an immense sense of self worth.

But they had to change Big from being a narcissist to being normal in order to make women feel like they could ‘tame the bastard’.. as I’ve become older and wiser I’ve come to see that Big rejected Samantha because she wasn’t vulnerable and weak enough and damaged enough for him. Narcissists can sniff out good boundaries fast and they always reject women who have them. The Big who changed his ways, went to Paris and brought back ‘his girl’ …. He doesn’t exist. Well, Carrie, to be fair, didn't write about "the same guy". That's a gross generalization. She wrote about the shifting roles of women in society at the time and whether women truly want what they've been conditioned to want. Everyone criticizes, judges, and even outright says they hate Carrie (very anti-Samantha) when the cold, hard reality is that those people ARE actually Carrie and not even CLOSE to being a Samantha. Samantha's only aspirational because we see her from the outside looking in. We don't know what's underneath the "fabulous", self-assured exterior or what she (and countless people "like" her) had to go through to become that.

To be honest, Samantha was the reason why I watched SATC in the first place. Carrie was the train wreck I could laugh my ass off at weekly. She never seemed to learn anything from her experiences. If you consider the show as a whole, she was basically "stalking" Big through each and every season (with short forays into other "relationships" lol) until she finally got him. In the book, she lost him which made more sense - in the series, she got her Sugar Daddy who could forever shower her with shoes, clothes and whatever else she wanted (until Chris Noth became too problematic and was killed off). Samantha was a fully formed character who wasn't shy about her sexual exploits and partners. She was fun and sexy and above all, smart AF. Needless to say, I don't watch the new show. It's missing a certain something/chemistry and really too woke to be fun at all. Now in the new season, apparently Aidan is back into the picture. Hopefully he only stays for a few episodes (unless he's been hit on the head and has lost his smarts).

    Hmmm...
I mean, I hear what this video is saying. Samantha my have the most interesting worldview, but Carrie is the more complex character because, like many of us, she doesn't have the answers. How many of us have romantic dalliances but nonetheless still hold ourselves out for that one monogamous union? Many of us have toxic relationships that can span decades of back-and-forth. And what is a healthy relationship anyway? How many of us actually achieve or even see a relationship where both/all parties are free of conflict, traumas and micro-aggressions that they may need to work on repeatedly over a long stretch of time? What I appreciate about the character of Carrie is that through Mr. Big's death, there really is no happily-ever-after and that despite our best efforts, we're really all alone in the end- and so we must find ways of being ok with that.
Samantha is fun, but I think that the reason why the writers struggle to develop her beyond just a bed-hopping punchline, is because she isn't really a fully formed person. She is without internal conflict- and who can relate to that?

I never liked Carrie and found her annoying but felt that when all the girls were together it's when it was at its best.
I started watching "And Just Like That" and ended up turning it off after 3 episodes and giving up. It feels very forced, inauthentic, and the worst qualities of the other girls are now on center stage as there isn't anyone to balance them out. Samantha is the star of SATC in many ways. However, I think it was the right choice to not make her the main character. At the start of the show, Samantha has everything she wants: a killer job, close friends, a great apartment, a glamorous lifestyle, ample self-confidence and a fulfilling sex life.
Her pre-season 4 relationships wouldn't make for compelling central plot points because we know she will be okay no matter what -- there is less at stake. She is confident and happy how she is. It is not until later seasons when she falls in love with Richard, contracts breast cancer, and opens up to Smith that we see real stakes in Samantha's plot lines.
To be a main character, Samantha would need to have a central struggle or conflict in the first 3 seasons. This wouldn't work because the fact that Samantha is happy with herself and her life are central tenants of her core character.
Carrie's arc would have made sense and fit the show's theme if it ended the way it was supposed to originally. Her relationship with Big was an addiction and the point was originally that such men do not change. She should have ended up happily single.
