There are four stages to shooting.
First - you just want to shoot a bird
Second - you want to shoot as many as you can
Third - you want to shoot the biggest, most difficult, most extreme etc
Fourth - you just go shooting
If you are at the fourth you will understand this video. If not you will be scratching your head.
Fifth , you want to watch your son , daughter or friend pull off a good shot and bask in their success .
Yeah the stages end with passing on info… but what is lost in this description is that you never LOSE the love of stage 1
Exactly that,20 years ago my son came and loaded for me.I shot a high,fast partridge some distance out and his excited`Oh Dad!` is still with me,he lives in Melbourne now and I haven`t seen him for 5 years.
Having worked as a gamekeeper for the past 3 years I can safely say that these 5 stages are undeniable accurate, it is incredibly easy to tell which stage an individual is in. Personally shooting is about the people and the surroundings and ensuring the sport we all love is kept alive and thriving

Alright, this video and it’s content with your attitudes toward shooting have earned my subscription with enthusiasm. I hadn’t realized that social media had spoiled yet another passion of mine, in some ways at least but it ever more steels my resolve to refrain from jumping into that cesspool. Good on you guys for this top notch discussion. You are men I’d love to hunt with no doubt.
As an artist I recognise the flow state as being ‘in the zone’ and it produces incredible results which you see once a piece is pretty much finished, having only been aware of a fraction of the process of making it. After this, a feeling of deepest satisfaction and peace prevail. Matched by the biggest smile you can imagine.
Sui generis. This one stands out from every other TGS video. Not about another gun. Not about another club course. Not about another manufacturer.
I reckon more people would do well to watch these discussions.....
What a delightful discussion! Simon has it completely right. One of my favorite days on a peg was watching a friend that I introduced to shooting absolutely catch fire on the next peg. Great memories.

Great video. Its nice to know it isn't just me. 47 years on, from baking hot days, to snow storms, and torrential rain, i still get excited and want to get everything ready days in advance.
I really enjoy your channel. This is a great episode. You and Simon did a super job expressing the essence of what the hunt is all about. I live in the States and my style of hunting is different but the emotions are the same. Hopefully one day I will be able to experience your style of hunting. Keep up the great work. All the best.

There are definite stages for a hunter. The young hunter is eager to shoot just anything and everything. This progresses through going for trophies and such. It culminates with just the enjoyment of going out with friends who are hunters and it really doesn't matter if you shoot anything or not. The enjoyment is just the act of being there. I was lucky in that my friends and I progressed through those stages rapidly. Many memories of wonderful days spent afield with lifelong friends.

Great watching you two, enjoyed the conversation, yes totally agree it’s more than just the days “bag”. Also agree that if it becomes just a target it’s time to quit or take a good look into yourself and the reason you’re out there. I stoped deer hunting for that exact reason, but now I think it’s time to go back and reevaluate and get back in the woods. Again great conversation!

Love the reference to rough shooting over a spaniel, patience, reading the dog, reading flushing point…. One of the things I love most about our sport👌 always a great watch and listen with Simon 👌

It's muscle memory. Me as a trades person, welder to be exact you get all diffrent joints you have to weld but you always go back to what you have done in the past and weld it out, learn something new about the specific job your on and pass it on to another. Same with shooting

Fire & Rescue Services refer to 'flow state' as a Recognised Prime Decision. You essentially place an action you have created, whether it worked or not into your memory. The problem with this in a command and control situation is your brain can be telling you to make decisions based on what you see to be correct without taking in all the information around you. It can
lead to bad or dangerous decisions.
Interesting how some of this conversation can be related to the emotions of incidents.
Flow state, a subconscious competence, to do a thing without consciously thinking about it, naturally..
It’s about understanding what you do ..
I am 73 years old, carry a .410, and work my dog mostly, and eat everything I shoot.
I would rather miss every shot surrounded by good friends than fill my bag surrounded by stranger antagonists

That's the first time ever I have heard someone say "Bellend" on CZcams. The greatest insult word ever and can be combined with others to vary the level of annoyance!. You chose "complete". Brilliant. PMSL.
We had our last day yesterday walk up with true friends, the old boys pegged out the young ones walking the hedges even some of the beaters took a gun out. We did draw pegs, but most of the time, every one was like hay I shot 3 last drive you go infront this time you will prob see more. Or the swapping of pegs depending on the wind direction so some one who hasn't seen any gets one. Even the trust in your friends abilities, especially on the walk up day when shooting is about lower than normal and when over people's heads. 7 guns in total 20 birds in the bag 10 less than the average for our normal driven day, on our little shoot. And the best thing of the day is when 3 of your friends turn around and say how much you have improved this season, taking better birds than you could the season before. As of poaching birds I always tell any one next to me if it's above my head shoot it cause I'll miss😂😂😂 it's all good fun.

Is driven game unique to Britain, I’ve not heard of it anywhere else
There is some in Spain , a little in Hungary and smatterings in most every country.
Using the whole bird is extreemly important, not just removing the breast and disrespecting the rest of the bird by throwing it away.
Use the whole bird or not at all.
In other words, be a gentleman and respect the entire experience.

Your videos are always fun and informative to watch. But this one was a bit pissy. Two grown men basically dictating how shooting should be done and how you should feel about it One way is not the only way. If someone is a dip shit they will be informed by the proper authority.Talk shotguns not philosophies on shooting ethics.
