  • On this week's show, I assemble and do a quick demonstration and explanation of MicroDial's tapering jig. This is NOT a review of the product, but rather a short demonstration of some of the jig's capabilities. I hope you enjoy the show.

    Just bought the MicroDial this morning.
    Go it up and running and finished a trim piece under the threshold of a new door install.
    Using the "Rise / Run formula I was pretty much spot on.
    Disappointed in the manual for putting together the Jig.
    But your video was a HUGE help.
    Thanks brutha

      I will be interested as well to see how I like it Paul. I'm looking forward to putting it into use. There have been quite a few times with my model builds that I needed to cut a taper and I came up with some pretty inventive ways of cutting them. I am hoping that by setting this jig to the angle taper that I want, I will be able to cut some pieces without having to using ingenuity. I will be sure to report back once I get the chance to put it through its paces. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

    Hi Ken! I enjoyed your review but, much like you, getting one for free is way different than paying over $125. I have tried a couple of tapering jigs that didn't work well and finally saw one of the YTers doing a taper on the jointer which came out fabulous for me. Best tapers I ever did. I don't know if you ever showed that but it really produces great results. Got my storage unit this morning and have over 100 boxes of tools to put in not counting all the big tools . Will start moving out and loading the unit tomorrow. Regards, Bill

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před 3 lety

      This wasn't really a review Bill as I haven't had the chance to use it as of yet. This was more of a show to bring it to people's attention and to hopefully answer a few questions that people might have regarding the jig if they were considering purchasing it. I may do a full review at another time on the show but I don't believe in doing a review until you've had a good chance to put the tool through its paces and really test it out. It is quite a bit of money to drop on a jig that will get used only sporadically so I know how fortunate I am to have it gifted to me. Thanks for tuning in to the show and good luck on your move.

    Hi Kenny good video as always. I would be curious to know what you thought would be the maximum length of board you could use the jointing feature on.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před 3 lety

      For me personally Robert, I would joint a board of more than 36" long and even then I think it might be pushing it a bit. I would want the entire jig to have complete contact against the fence for the entire duration of the cut and at a guess, I think 36" might max that out. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show and taking the time to leave your question. I appreciate it.

    There was a lot of thought and work put into that jig. I don't feel that a buck 85 is a bad number for it. I'll be waiting patiently for the notification for the folliw up video. Meanwhile if I find myself needing a tapering jig I've already got 1 gripper

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před 2 lety +1

      I still like the jig and it still works extremely well. I do like the fact that I don't have to guess at the angles that I am cutting on the taper because I can dial them in to the angle that I need instead of just lining up the jig with a line on the board. The repeatability of this jig is fantastic. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

    Hi Kenny. Happy new year to ya.
    Not a criticism but I have noticed in your last couple of videos that there is a distinctive hissing sound during your recordings. They were previously crystal clear. Just wondered if you had noticed it yourself. Hope you don't mind me saying.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před 3 lety

      Happy new year to you as well Cliff. For the record, I don't mind you saying at all. Feedback from the viewers is very important to me. For a while there (I think it was about 6 episodes of the show) I was testing some new lapel microphones. You might even be able to see one clipped to the top of my apron. Either way, they were horrid and after trying several tweaks and adjustments, I finally stopped using them because I couldn't stand the hissing and the poor quality of the audio. I was looking for a way to improve the audio and only succeeded in making it worse. Not to worry, once those shows are done airing, the sound should go back to normal as I've discontinued the use of the lapel mics. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in Cliff and taking the time to give your feedback. I love it.

    Wonder how long a board you can taper with it?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před 6 měsíci

      As long as you have support of the board, length doesn't matter. The restrictions start when you slide the jig too far off the table and lose contact with the fence and the table support. So you have to take that into consideration when using the jig. For most applications, this jig will work just fine however. Thanks for tuning in

    Informative demonstration, Kenny, as usual. I need a tapering jig and was trying to decide if I should make one myself or get a manufactured one. Personally, this MicroGig unit looks like too much of a PITA to bother with. I have a Grrripper, use it on occasion, and I'm not all that impressed with that either. One reviewer called it the Slllipper and I can see why. Sometimes it just doesn't grip well. If you haven't already, check out this homemade one from Wood Magazine. I think I'm going to go with this one. Thanks again for posting. Mark. czcams.com/video/ywAmEcNozJ4/video.html

      Even in my review of the Gripper Mark, I state that you really need to keep them clean with alcohol. Otherwise, the gripper quickly becomes a slipper. I am rather fond of them though but I can appreciate you opinion on them. As for the taper jig, I love this micro jig one but I do have a simple shop made version on the channel. While it may be a little large for your purpose, you can always resize it to suit your needs. Here's a link. I hope it helps. Thanks for tuning in. czcams.com/video/8ZKIZnyjmoI/video.html

And thank you for the alcohol tip with the Gripper, I will definitely try it. Mine never got dirty enough to clean, visibly, so it never occurred to me that it might be an issue. Once again, thanks for the quick reply and info! Cheers! Mark
