Maybe the solution is to make it rarer, like every 3 years. When it's rarer, maybe more actual stars would join. Then the interest will grow.
stars wont join they have been playing a lot of matches the whole season to risk any form of injury through that circus show.

They should pick 10 difficult dunks and let all competing players attempt all of them.
Every successul dunk contains points and the most difficult dunk is the highest.
That will eliminate the need for judves.

@@jyashin Not true at all. I've always been a Portland Trailblazers fan, but also a fan of the NBA as a whole. If someone was a fan of the NBA in the mid 90s through 00s and don't know who Michael Finley is, they weren't a fan of the NBA.
He averaged over 15 points per game for over 10 seasons and was an all-star two or three times. He was also an all rookie and an important piece of the Spurs championship team.
Great video! The game has changed a lot from the old era. Centers have forgotten about post moves and now shoot 3-pointers. Everyone wants to make flashy passes or shoot from half-court, but no one seems to cross and go for a drive anymore. I'm not saying that these new playstyles have directly impacted the dunk contests, but they could be a contributing factor.

I like bigs like AD and Brook Lopez who can take the 3 if they’re open and make teams pay, but understand their role as bigs. Evolving but keeping their role. But Karl Anthony Towns is a Small forward with C/PF next to his name

There are real, legit dunkers in the NBA. They just aren’t signing up for the dunk contest. So big boss man Adam needs to figure out how to incentivize getting these dudes to sign up. And to your point of the bias and terrible judges, thats probably where Mr. Silver needs to start.

The big difference between an amateur hooper and a NBA player was that the last one only got two chances to perform a successful dunk, so he had to be impeccable in what he was trying.
When you need tons of tries, you're just improvising or you don't really care sufficiently: you only show disrespect for the performance and for whoever pay to watch it. Better stay home, then.
Bring in the pro dunkers! The entertainment is all that matters.
Maybe the dunk contest format should be like this
- a professional dunker will demonstrate a dunk then participants will mimick the dunk and the one who got it correctly wins but they can add some twist in it
Instead of making it yearly, make it bi-annual.
Please award Aaron Gordon something, he was robbed. Imagine being a pro watching someone get robbed like that; it wouldn't incentivize anyone to get better in a contest that's rigged.
Styles will eventually saturate; allow for leap auxilliary props e.g trampolines to further add to possible creative elements to dunks.

I like the idea of having NBA-dunkers compete vs. pro-dunkers. NBA-dunkers likely wouldn't agree to this because they'd get crushed. I also think the NBA should put up more money for the winner of the contest. If it put up a few million, the NBA dunk contest would get a lot more attention.
Hear me out... maybe they should introduce these high school/college/YT dunkers who want to prove themselves and not afraid to take risks? 🤷🏽♂️

1)Allow dunkers from the streets to enter the competition.
2) reward the all star game winner with Home court advantage in the finals.
There I fixed it, I accept credit but cash is always welcome.
Because NBA players are not focused on dunking, thats just a tiny part of their professional skillset and they dedicate just a bit of their time to it. Meanwhile dunk specialists like Jordan Kilganon are focusing all their time towards that one skill, and obviously a competition in DUNKING should involve people like that...who are good in that particular skillset. Otherwise it will always be at the mercy of 1 or 2 generational talents saving the 'nba dunk show'.
Yeah that's not a good idea. There's already dunk competitions for pro dunkers. People want to see the NBA dunk contest because they're NBA players.
The thing is, even if the dunks are mid, if you're getting the big names in the NBA to join, people will watch it. That said, it's completely understandable that players don't want to put their careers in any sort of jeopardy, no matter how small.
Perhaps the better solution is to reduce the number of games in the regular season.

I don't remember what year it was but the NBA had probably the most horrible idea for a dunk contest. The players had to spin a wheel that had dunks from past dunk contests. Whatever dunk the wheel landed on was the dunk they had to do. There was no originality in that contest at all. It was just the participants redoing old dunks.

The issue with letting in pro dunkers into the dunk contest is prize money and paying them. Current dunk contest contestants don't get paid, i believe.

Unless you change the rim or use trampoline (think NBA Jam) or other enhancements, it's hard to make the dunks more interesting. MJ has a 48" vert and 0.92 sec hangtime, without enhancements and props, there are only so many dunks you can do with a 10 foot rim, 48" max vert and 0.92 max hangtime.

The dunk contest has always been inconsistent. To say that its trended with any consistency is deceptive.
Snubbing Aaron Gordon the second content he joined started the rapid death of the dunk contest, couple NY NBA players not caring about it adds more fuel. You see, in a game on basketball, however insane your dunk is, it still counts as two points.
Look y’all, the human body can only produce so many spins. It can only feed a ball through the legs so many times. The human body can jump but it comes back to the ground in less than one second. Y’all are asking people to do more and more in that one second. Eventually it gets to the end of what they’re capable of.
