It's true. That cruise control is a pain where it is. When you go to turn the system on, it's near impossible to do it without moving the throttle. I usually reach across with my left hand. The up/down buttons are fine but that on/off has gotta move.

My god the drone adds so much more to the videos. It shows the bike from a different perspective. Really nice. Hopefully you will be able to integrate it into the vids while riding. Great purchase. Cheers.

Shaft drive and a cup holder of course and I'd be a buyer. Like the 6.1 gallon gas tank and the Pirelli's. Excellent video/editing/drone work btw.
Sky King it's a 173hp hyper bike that's made to perform with zero compromizes. a shaft drive is awesome and i personaly would also opt for one, but not for this bike.
Shaft drive is great if it's mated to a boxer or an inline engine mounted longitudinally. Kinda pointless with a V-twin.

Hi Rj I tested this bike too (video in my channel) and I wanted to now how you liked the wind protection ??
Couple of Qs:
1. With the panniers on, how wide is it at the back? Is it wider than at the edge of the mirrors/bar ends?
2. Is that a halogen bulb in the lamp? No LED (SD1290 2.0 seems to have LED).
3. Is there a center stand? Maintenance on a long trip would be easier with it.

Always been a fan of half faired bikes. Looks so much more appealing than the naked version despite the aardvark nose
never seen a GT without the panniers. looks very nice.
Planning on buying one in two days. I get that it's bettwr to have cruise control on the left, but don't see it being that hard to deal with on the right. Put 33K miles on a 2016 XR and never liked the bike. The KTM has everything I'm currently wanting. Weight, power, panniers, cruise control and heated grips, and decent fuel range. Fuess I'll find out soon if it's the right decision!

You get used to the cruise control reasonably quickly but it is easier to reset it rather trying to press "resume". Thanks, Ben
Such a powerful bike and stupid UK climate conditions, never stopping rain. As a motorcyclist, I'd move from UK if I lived there.

RJ you should try to set up a test ride on the new triumph 765 in October i think is its release also the duke 790 when never it arrives. :)
Is it a good starter bike if you want to get to bigger bikes. (ofcourse you will start on a small bike) but if you want to ride bigger bikes the gs or gt??
it's nice to see when you removed the panniers there are no horrible rails .

Would there be an optional center stand for it? I mean, it's designed for longer trips, and there should be some trouble along the way.
The cruise control issue in which you operate with your throttle hand is the same problem I have with my Harley's right turn signal

after you have had the bike for a while could you do a comparison to the BMW 1200gs is it a rival or in a different league.

I noticed the baffler is still in, shame, the bike looks very practical, but its beauty kind of lost to, love the way you can easely get the cases off, the versys wasnt so easy i remember. 1 question, how does she feel on the bumby roads, potholes and such?

How much of a hassle do you think having no centre stand will be? Seems odd for a bike designed for distances?
And your opinion of hand guards for one of these? I don't think they can be added 'cos of the way the fairing / steering lock is?
I seriously went to my local KTM place (which you use) last year with a view to buy one but they had no demo 1290GT and I wasn't gonna spend £15k buying without riding it.
I realy like the GT. Wy don't they put the new display on the bike ? This is the old one from the previous model right ?

hey RJ, i love the KTM 1290 r and the 1290 gt, but i got 2 questions about them.
-how is the reliability of ktm and the 1290's engine?
-does the engine make much mechanical tiking noise?
i ride a bmw s1000rr now, but if i change to something new it wil be those ktm's or the bmw s1000r or the s1000xr.

For me it was boring compared to sd1290r, but the R had full acra with different map. Would love to hear your thought, does it excite you to ride like nuda, s1000r and nuke do.
In my opinion the sound of the intro is too loud in comparison to your talking. I always turn down the volume for the intro, just to then turn it up again because I cannot hear what you are saying. Other than that, great video as always.

Also, an idea, now that you've got the drone. Those shots were beautiful. Overlay it straight over this clip, so we hear your commentary but get more stable shots, or dynamic angles of the bike. Happy to help out if you need a drone pilot as I left mine in Australia.

I like the sport version but at the same time I like this bike slightly more, it's more practical
If given the choice would you have the gt or the one you have got now?
For some reason I have always like the GT more than the R, but I have never ridden one.
RJ how is the power delivery and engine braking in this one? Riding the 1290R i felt is a slightly hectic experience, is this a more relaxed drive?
I never really liked kym but this bike looks nice and clean!
Why haven't you liked KTM? They're pretty solid bikes overall, or is it just that you don't find them aesthetically pleasing?

Yeah the naked look isn't for everyone, I'm more of a cruiser guy myself but I quite like the look of the KTM's, this one in particular doesn't really hit the spot for me as much as the others, but still looks like a fairly solid bike.

Three cameras used here, DJI Osmo for the walk around, DJI Mavic for the drone shots, GoPro 5 for the riding shots.
Heated seat! woowzer - well speced bike will give BMW a run for their money!

Hey RJ just wanted to ask if you ever tried out, or maybe planned to test ride a BMW K1300R, Suzuki B King, Yamaha VMAX or a Ducati Diavel?
I know they are not as light "compared to your KTM Super Duke" but those Muscle Bikes rly do have something special about them, just like those "older" Japanese Big Bikes with over 1300ccm.
Like that german saying "Displacement can not be replaced by anything, except through more Displacement" ;D
How about going to Paris with miss rj ? Will be nice to test the gt :)

The bike looked a lot more red on the drone shots, and I actually liked it better than the orange.
Shall we expect a long-term review? I'm gonna be trading my 2011 bmw k1300s very soon and I see this bike the only possible substitution/evolution available on the market so far. Would love to hear your comments about it.

It's a really nice bike, but sadly, I wouldn't have a use for it since I've got the 1290R.
with all the bikes you have and all the bikes you ride and love, I've never seen you riding a Supersport. Ever thought of getting one ? You know, if not to ride it, at least for the looks. Like a Panigale.
