      Single player, linear games telling a story are no longer allowed due to market trends showing that it's easier to make a multiplayer game with micro-transactions that will keep retards coming back and spending money over a long period of time.

    Mac i get that we shouldn't buy these games to support them, but we still want to play games. You still get to play every game (yeah i know its your job too play games) . I'm a big gamer but none of my friends are. They buy all the big AAA games and don't even realize that they are getting fucked over. They just see the good graphics and pew pew X ray vision. AND THEY LOVE IT! That's why nothings going to change. Most of the AAA crowd don't look up reviews and if they do its by IGN or some big company.

      there is no crash coming, the gaming industry is making more money then hollywood each year.. and that amount of money is rising each year aswell.
      Dont kid yourself, people want to be in that dream no matter how much it costs as we've, as a people.. as humanity, created a world people dont really want to live in anymore.
      Thats what i think lays at the very basis of all of this.

    • @baemheadshot86
      @baemheadshot86 Před 6 lety

      sounds about right. they have to be making mad cash with those newfangled business models, for them to be in every bigger game.
      in the end money talks and as long as it's talking, more and more of this bowel movement of a concept finds its way into all types of games. people who dont partake and pay up, will be along for the ride or shift focus on other things.
      it's cool that people like mack and jim sterling are speaking up. but honestly, history shows that predatory tactics like whats happening right now with microtransactions in games, just work in the context of a company. and somewhere, people seem to vote for that shit with their wallets. or so they make it seem at least

  • @Blootrix
    @Blootrix Před 6 lety +9

    I don't think the people that defend this kind of stuff in games are idiots at all. I think they don't have much else going for them, I think they don't know known any better and I think they love the thing that they are defending. I don't even think of them as Fan Boys, I think of them as Sad Boys.
    If you are, for example, a 12 year old who's only been gaming for two years, you wake up, go to school for 6 hours, get bullied, come home, eat dinner, listen to your parents scream at each other, go to bed, repeat, repeat, repeat, and the one thing you have to look forward to in your year is a single game, and you get that game, and the one thing you've looked forward to for your whole year, through all the bullshit and mundanity of your life, is a game that people left and right are tearing down, how can you as that 12 year old even begin to let that happen without defending the one thing you have left? Fair enough, that isn't the case for everyone, but I'm willing to bet a vast majority of the people defending this kind of stuff aren't in the best of situations, or they wouldn't be so invested in a single game.
    You're absolutely right in saying that the current system that is running rampant among games is corrupt, twisted and deprived of any love or care whatsoever. But I just worry that people will continue to fund these systems if they feel attacked.
    All in all though, great video and you did a great job in explaining how things could be better.

    • @mcfakenamesir6796
      @mcfakenamesir6796 Před 6 lety +4

      This is a very thoughtful comment that has a lot of truth in it. Typically people who are extremely invested into a game generally have something unfortunate going on in their life and that emotional energy is being redirected to a game as a defense mechanism.
      People who don't have much cling to what they do for shear life. It's unfortunate that a good portion of them never got to see some of the greats. My favorite was battlefield 1942 and it went on for years until they finally shutdown the servers. If some of these fanboys grew up on stuff like that they would have a better perspective on what is worth defending.
      Boycott is a practical method though it is difficult to do when you have a cult following fan base. A great method is to motivate someone who is independently wealthy to come into the market and begin to release solid, modern, yet old-school quality of games. By doing this they will achieve considerable market share and some of the big guys will start to re-figure their methods if they are consistently getting blown out by this new guy's group. A medium group of people who could build off passion and dedication could do it too but it is hard to get enough people together that aren't enslaved by money.
      Imagine someone like Elon Musk put his mind toward developing the next Call of Duty. Thankfully he's busy trying to get us to other planets before we nuke ourselves.
      Hell with Mack's dedication of supporters I wouldn't be surprised if he could somehow spinoff a little gaming development company. With his attention to detail and the commitment of his patreons I bet in 5-10 years time with consistent effort he could have a system of producing games.

      I can testify as a former addict that video games were my one real escapism when I was a young kid. They were what I looked forward to at the end of the day and whenever my Dad took them away because that was his asshole method of disciplining me I remember becoming almost physically sick with depression because it felt like games were all I had. I couldn't imagine being a kid today and having these sorts of games to look forward to, the thought is depressing.

    • @mcfakenamesir6796
      @mcfakenamesir6796 Před 6 lety +1

      It is conditioning in the sense that it makes it easier to produce games since the expectation has been eroded. I liken it to lies by omission.
      If you were raised only being shown 50% of something then that is all that exists for you. For those folks they can't escape the matrix unless someone shows them clearly how good games can be. The idea with proof in a format that is accessible and in a way that they can understand. Until then it is a foreign concept.
      With the schoolyard talking about the latest hogwash it makes it more difficult for someone to talk up some previous game that may be better but just isn't current.

    In many years people that have grown with all this loot boxes, MTs and shite games will look back and say: "Remember when games were good?, we had loot boxes, skill progression, xray vision, skins, we could even pay to beat the game faster....now it costs $20 dollars to upgrade your graphics from medium to high and $40 to ultra + shadows with the "High Octane Graphics Elite DLC". Obviously the gaming industry is in a very bad place now, and a crash would be good.
    But the sheer amount of sheep and gamers who just dont know how good games can be, or just don't care is easily enough to make the investors happy for years to come.
    I haven't seen a decline in profits for AAA games, so it's nice wanting a crash but I don't see it happening.
    I think we'll need to be content with the smaller games that do have a genuine goal to be good games.

    You can blame "Whales" for this. They are only the 1%-10% of the audience but provide over 50% of the company's income. Thus games are designed around these "Whales" which include adding more micro-transactions, quantity over quality and gambling instead of appealing to the masses. Unfortunately this minority will always exist and we cannot do anything about it.

Money to buy any hw they want, money to buy any game they want. But they don't have much time. So they're actually glad there is pay-to-win mechanics, meaning that they can launch a game and get all the pretty stuff they want for cash (which they have enough of).

    What a glorious goddamned video. I know you feel like it falls on deaf ears, and a lot of the time you're right, but I truly believe that even reaching one person, two, a handful, etc.. can really make a difference, especially when it comes to very young gamers that are likely the target of this level of manipulation. That's how you have to fight against bloated corruption like this with billions of dollars and a massive mouthpiece - little by little. Keep on, Mack. You are hands-down my favorite reviewer and personality on the Youboob and one of the truly honest voices out there. I'm a bit older like yourself, and your integrity reminds me of reading PC Gamer in the 90's and enjoying the quality of journalism and games we used to have. Honestly, the budgets for big triple a games do not make sense anyway. A lot and I do mean a LOT of money is wasted. Not just on marketing, but more so on actual development. Quite a lot of games now use Hollywood actors for voice-overs and they often aren't even that great (read: literally phoned in and edited in post-production). Yet... it does account for hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted.

    Bang on the money again Mack. Fucking greed has been killing this PC games market more and more each year. The price of PC games was always a pro over the consoles because you could get the same game for 29.99 tops but 45 - 50 quid for the consoles. NOW regular PC games have equalled console rip off prices. I have a new Steam voucher in my inbox offering me 50% off of Civ VI digital deluxe. IT'S 70 fucking quid for a PC game? They are offering it to me now for 35 quid which is still over the top as the reviews are all shit. 70£. I love Civ, but I wont be touching this title EVER. Fuck the shareholders, I won't even get it for 20 quid. They can fuck off. Civ was once the top selling PC game. Then they started releasing on the XBOX and turned it into a cartoon of a game, but it was console price AND since arriving on that platform, Firaxis prices have rocketed. fuck 'em.
    Thing is so many PC players now have come over from the toy machines and they gladly pay console title prices for PC titles. I'm fucked off with it all. If no-ne buys the shit, then the prices will come down, and they'll get the message that we're fed up with paying for only portions of the game that has been stripped. All the games are at it now.

    Personally I thinks we have two option when it comes to this. One is if we pirate the games of these studios that might make investors feel they is not enough return on investment, but this might really hurt the industry instead of chasing away the investors and the other is if we put money in the indie game scene, maybe invest in engines that will help indie developers better or a engine that will give them the tools to make make triple A like games but with little to no effort from the indie develops. Cause what I have seen is that if you are a indie developer you have a lot of costs that you have to deal with in order to make a good game which in turn makes indie developers take cost cuts that hurt their games.

    its the younger generation that i think to blame i think the reason behind it is they got into gaming by playing those shitty free to play games on their phones and ipads and start buying micro-transactions using their parents cards, and now its moved into our commercial AAA games its sad they weren't around when you paid for a game and you got the full game but now that online is out developers dont need to get testers in and fix the bugs they just use these "Betas" where the game comes out in like a month or even just a few days there the testers and the devs know that they can just fix the bugs that get reported and just patch it in, 15 years ago that wasn't the case they needed to make sure the game was pretty much bug free because they couldn't patch it in later as most people didnt have online back then, one of the many cons of online gaming.

They were the first to discover that digitalized gambling is the next big thing and that not only does it maximize profit margins but it actually supercedes all of the revenue that gaming would accrue annually and it requires far less time and effort on their part. All of the current publishers now want to follow their example and are moving closer and closer to establishing fully realized extortionate virtual casinos.

    You finally got it Mack; the thing that has ruined big budget video gaming for a long time now. They use half or probably more often 3/4 of the development "costs" on BS that has NUFFIN to do with the actual video game. Then, in order to get it all back, they gouge the ever living fuck out of the games. It's no wonder a game can sell MILLIONS of copies at 60$ each with 30$ season passes and STILL be viewed as a failure. They've over bloated the budgets to such a massive scale that no amount of sales will ever get it back, but rather than fix the source the problem, they just double down on it all and gouge as much as possible to cover it. "Our plan is to waste more money on more hype to get more sales to cover the money wasted getting the hype. If that's not enough... we'll just add loot boxes."

    A really good method to destroying these companies is to be a patient gamer. Always wait at least 6-9+ months after a game has been released. You'll either get it on sale or get it cheap since you're pretty much a year behind and their sequel will be out meaning the previous game drops in price naturally anyway.
    It's pretty much what I do. It's actually much more beneficial to PC gamers too because it means you'll get more longevity out of your system as you'll always be slightly behind on needing the newest upgrade, since you're playing older games.
    If you can really handle it then go 2 years back instead. Maybe even say "okay I'll allow myself to buy 2 new AAA games this year but no more" so you're getting the best of both worlds.
    I know with my current rig and following this method I won't realistically need to upgrade my system for at least 5-7 years. Plus I save way more money and I don't fund these fucktard companies, yet I still get to play their games.
    It's either that or piracy lol!

    The FILM industry is backed by those shareholders who didn't see the advantage in gaming until Halo 2 got their attention and Modern Warfare 2 convinced them to get heavily involved, so they jumped in taking their hollywood 'knowledge' and started pushing to market the fuck out of every new game with insane production values, advertisement costs etc. The kids buying everything is just a part of it. Back in the day devs worked hard to do what they could with the tech that they had, today the industry is telling them you have to pay X amount for this department to do this kind of work because thats the kind of shit going on in the film industry, they cant even afford to make these games, they are already banking on their sales through pre-orders alone to cover most costs.. its INSANE.
