The Sacred 28 has always been one of my favourite creations from JK Rowling as it highlights the theme of racism and prejudice in the Harry Potter story. That was also it’s purpose in the wizarding world aswel, to show that there are still some families who are proud of their pure blood heritage. In todays video I’m going to fully explain the history of the sacred 28, why some families were left off it and I’ll be looking at each of the 28 families current status today in order to determine if they’d still be eligible to remain on the list over 70 years after its original publication.

Good job Voldemort at eliminating pure-bloods!

Ironically he is a half blood.
He probably doesn’t know it lol

I don't think dragons can be pureblood but okay.
I don't think they could be half-bloods or muggleborns either
what would be a muggle born dragon be? a Komodo Dragon?
a pure blood witch
First father of a half dragon ... can dragons polymorph in the harry potter universe?
I don't know... The Targaryens seem pretty pure-blood to me...

Heres my question,is the wizarding world effected by Coronavirus or are the witches/wizards immune to it?
If they can get it,it's 100% certain Arthur Weasely will get it,due to his odd obsession with everything muggle.
@@elliebellieboo
Welp😂
The Sacred 28 were not only pureblood families, but those of very high standing who helped found the British Wizarding Society, probably before the 1900s.
Tom Marvolo Riddle which would also kind of explain why the Potter family wasn’t in there either (even with the outspoken inclusion of Muggle born witches)
VOLDERMORT WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!!!!
hanakimi09 that would be wrong. One of Harry’s ancestors was related to the person who made Skelegro and slim hair potion. That person made cures for muggle diseases pretending they were “cures”. This is where the fortune of the Potter’s began.
SPIOLERS AHEAD
YEAH I THOUGHT HE DIED?!?!
That makes sense because the umbridge name is a pureblood name but they weren't really involved in high society for example Dolores umbridges dad was just a janitor

Didn’t the Malfoy’s have muggle blood in them from a long time ago, when they were heavily involved in muggle politics?
Trisha Reddy Good point!! Yes
Trisha Reddy ya they acually had many half bloods and muggles horns but were hidden and covered up by the family
Trisha Reddy it’s only been rumoured but nowhere confirmed
Harry Potter Folklore Malfoys prolly paid someone to make them sound more like rumors or something
Even if they did pure bloods aren't all just no attachment to muffles they can have muggleborns in their family tree just they wouldn't be considered pure blood for a few generations. I think Harry Potter folklore has done a video awhile ago about how this all works.
According to an old Pottermore article on Ollivander, he had one deceased daughter and one living son. There was no name ever listed. He's also stated to have a muggle-born mother.
Oh okay, so then that takes Ollivander off the list too then

Ollivander was saved by Donny and transported to Shell Cottage.
If I have existed in the wizarding world, and happened to have been in a pureblood family, I would want my family to be like the Macmillans. Keeping their bloodline 100% pure but never hating muggles, and never pressuring to marry purebloods. It's like that perfect area in the middle.
I would prefer weasley's, although they were pretty poor, so I'd probably like to be half-blood. Not as much hatred from a lot of the wizarding community as muggle-borns, but not constant pressure to be racist, and being inbred, like most pure-blood families.
@@andrewsucksatvideos4482 I have no idea? Maybe in the wizarding world there's a thing sort of like how we have gay straight and bi, they could have not attracted to muggles, only attracted to muggles, and attracted to both sort of thing. Although I'm assuming wizards also have gay straight and bi.
I'd love to be a macmillan in the series. Ernie seems like a decent dude.

Candice Wynter is there any proof that the Borgin Male Line is dead or that it’s not pure? Maybe the Borgin family had came from France or something, and they only wanted British Pure Bloods on that list
Thanks for the ❤️ Dean, have you ever been able to find out more on the Borgin family line? Or looked into it yet? I just realized that 28 is a multiple of 7
So is fourteen. The age I was when I finished Order. Strange
Oof
For some reason when I read this I was like “no it aint bruh”. Then I thought. And killed myself
Not related but I don't think Charlie Weasley will marry. He has his dragons 😊
I imagine him finding a spouse who is as athletic and outdoorsy as he is. Probably partially because I want the line to continue and we didn't get enough of him in the books or movies... and they lost so many people during the war, so people tend to couple-up after that kind of loss.
I’m pretty sure he’s asexual J.K Rowling as hinted about it a lot
The fact that he is not married and doesn't have kids doesn't mean he is alone. He may have a girlfriend, but doesn't want to officially marry. He also may be child-free. After growing up with 6 younger siblings that would be understandable.
We are not in the 19th century, when you were either married or celibate
You can’t rule out the possibility that a Charley might yet have a pureblood child.
Charlie has a really small chance of marrying a fellow dragon lover and raising a human kid amongst their 5-7 dragon children.
Unlikely that the dragon lover is even a pure blood tho
I think that at one point, the Sacred 28 were all noble houses in a Wizarding monarchy that was either overthrown and replaced by the Ministry or simply died out.
Remus Lupin informs Harry when he consults him about the potion book belonging to the half-blood prince and he states that there are no princes in the wizarding world. I just think the ideology of pure blood became prominent around 12th century influenced by muggles institutionalization of the aristocracy since Muggle and wizard societies were not yet segregated.
Would've been interesting, though. 😆
There is a death eater Selwyn, in deathly hallows Voldemort scream "Your wand; Selwyn, give me your wand" at him to give him his wand just before Harry and Hagrid pass through the magical barrier around Tonk's parent's house.
The Rosier could still be extant just like the Lestrange family, it is never stated that Evan was the last and as we see in fantastic Beasts there are still some Rosiers we don't know
Alex Marissens Felix Rosier from the Hogwarts Mystery mobile game could be keeping the line alive.
Fantastic Beasts and the mobile game both take place before Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts
@@jamiemccullough1970 So?
I agree that the Rosiers are much like the Lestranges their could be branch families in France. I’ve also wondered whether cadet French families of the Malfoys & Blacks exist coz the Malfoys came from Normandy and the Blacks slogan is ‘Toujours Pur’ i.e. always pure.
That’s why they are great for my RP name lol
Surprised that Crabbe and Goyle are not included in the list, as they were known death eaters.
taylor k not all death eaters are on the list as they may have half-bloods far down the line and maybe a few Muggle-borns
꧁Rblox Stuff꧂ I don’t think Muggleborns would even be alive if they tried joining
Eva the muggleborn witch yeah maybe, buuuuuut maybe some blood traitors were there and thus not on the list
Voldemort was a half blood, snape was a half blood, soooo many half bloods. and they ironically despised them. JK Rowling did this on purpose. She envisioned Voldemort to be like Hitler. Hitler was a Jew that hated Jews. So Voldemort was created as a half blood that hated non-pure bloods.
@@vegaswould Hitler's Jewish ancestry is inconclusive; some of his ancestry is unknown and so it's disputed whether he had some Jewish ancestry on his paternal grandfather's side.
For the Gaunts even if there were still people called gaunt it would have not been up there due to Voldemort’s mom marrying a muggle.
Lunanimations No because they didn’t marry, they just had a baby who took his fathers surname
@@gabrielle8355 I think they did.. She gave him love potion
@@gabrielle8355 The line would still be broken.
Can you also do a video about why Snape left his Half Blood Prince book even though he knew the dark spells written inside?
Because of plot obviously
The book is just a common Textbook with notes written in the margins right? So it makes sense that he left it with the other textbooks..
snape was very poor. i’m guessing he had to use the school’s old textbooks
I think it was a borrowed book, so he had to give it back when the year ended.
It was Snape mother’s book. Harry hoped it’s might belong to James but the book publishing dated back about 50 years ago when Harry checked. Bursted his bubble. And the skeptical Hermione found her (Eileen Prince) in old newspaper archives. And also the news about her marry a muggle name Snape.
If you think about it families like the greengrass , Parkinson and the Abbott family only have female heirs we know of so if they get married their child will not have the last name of their family rather their husbands family so wouldn’t their family be lost too especially with the greengrass blood curse. Just a thought would like to see your views on it.
You're right but there are possibilities how the names could survive. E.g. Pansy's husband would come from a less important family and the children could carry her name. Alternatively the children would be named Parkinson-something meaning that the name would somewhat survive. The last possibility is that e.g. one child carry the husband's surname and the other would be called Parkinson or Parkinson-something.
Another factor is that Pansy, Daphne, Hannah etc. could be just from main family and it's possible that they have male cousins who would carry the name further.
There is a possibility their husbands might take their wife’s last name
or they might marry a woman?
Or wife lol but yes I do see all of your point of views in it
So as far as I'm aware only Astoria greengrass has died, in modern potter, from the greengrass bloodcurse
Only 28 pure bloods, it's not that much for the amount of students enrolled in the school I expected like 100 or beyond.
Wolf Storm Wizard it’s 28 families not people
it's families, not people
ReigningSP yeah but in order to get close to that they’d need to have 3 or 4 kids each.
It's 28 families.
Sirius said it himself in Order of the Phoenix: there simply aren't enough pure blood families, so we're all related to each other. We're all cousins, pretty much.
There are muggle-borns and half-bloods in the current student body of Hogwarts. 😅
can ur next video be what if Voldemort went after Neville that night
Please do what if the Dursleys told Harry about his past and identity before he came to Hogwarts
TheFoodieOutrider I understand why Petunia wouldn’t want to tell Harry though, because when Lilly went to Hogwarts and came back saying all these amazing things. It must have been terrible for Petunia. So sending Harry would bring back all the memories.
If the potters had been on the list, according to the updated video the pureblood line would have ended with the birth of Harry.
If the Potter's had been on the list either they would say that they don't want such honour or be proud of being on the list. If they were proud of it, James Potter would have been raised with pureblood beliefs and married a pureblood witch and the line will still continue as purebloods. If not, everything will happen as we know; he will marry Lily Evans and Harry will be born. So the line doesn't stay pureblood.
@@saanvigoel7001 ik I'm just stating it
The pureblood line did end with Harry's birth.
It ended with James as Lilly is muggle born. Harry is a half blood married to a pure blood Ginny Weasley.
@@kerry-annjacobs6260James is a pureblood so the title doesn't end with his birth. It ends when Harry is born.

You can probably omit Greengrass from the list as well. Although Astoria married a pureblood, the family has no known male descendants to carry the family name. Astoria has a sister, Daphne, but regardless of who (or if) she married, the line would still be extinct.
His list is inconsistent with that
I actually associate Greengrass with an old British cop show named Heartbeat.
Hang on, did Pansy actually have any male siblings? if not, then the Parkinson family will die out when she marries.

I wish there were a line of Good bloods. A family line of witches and wizards who were teachers and healers. They spent their lives inventing new spells and potions for healing sickness and improving mental and physical health, as well as increasing the education of others through science and magical discovery.

The Sacred 28 are British Pure-Bloods, so Lestrange would not count
Neither should the rosiers really
The British Lestrange could be a cadet house of the French one. Medieval Britian and France had heavy intermingling when it came to nobility.
-equadore- neither would Malfoy
@@hiddeneyes7292 What about Scorpius?
-equadore- Scorpius would not include the Malfoy on the list because they should not have been there in the first place as the Malfoy family originated in FRANCE.
I don't think I would count the Black Family as extinct. The reason is simple: Sirius's uncle Alphard Black was cast out of the family by Walburga Black for giving the runaway Sirius money.
But since Walburga's line has gone extinct and Alphard is the last male heir to the family, that means any legitimate claim to the family's name and legacy would immediately fall onto Alphard Black and whatever kids he has. The Purebloods would probably happily welcome him back (as long as he married another Pureblood) and dismiss the excommunication as "family politics".
Alphard black died during the first war , and he was a bachelor .
@@jules2291 Huh. I missed that.
Would have been an interesting theory - but Alphard would have returned when Sirius started the Order again, wouldn't be any reason for him to remain in hiding.
But Sirius got money from him when he died, and Walburga removed him as she took that as meaning Alphard new he was going to run away / befriend blood traitors.

I thought the Gaunt bloodline was still alive (somewhat) that the descendents are living in the US magical community.
This list only refers to the British population. Americans probably have a more extensive list due to the non-muggle mixing policy (as of the 1920s - it might have change since then).
@@beyo5 True, but the bloodline could be alive if there was squibs in the Gaunt family (and also the Black family) that ran off to save themselves from being killed and the bloodline could be around.

You look like you have to roofie people in order to get laid..... and yeah.... I know you're a lady....
Out of curiosity, if a witch from one of those family names marries and a wizard with another of those family names and if the witch takes the wizard's family name like Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy or the parents decide to do a hyphenated last name like Justin, does the witch's family name stop existing?
Emily Pan I believe it does, since most purebloods consider only the male line. I don’t think they would hyphenate.
@@trishareddy2570 IF Justin has kids with a pure-blood witch, the kids will be half-blood and will have probably will have his last name. After many generations after that, his line might turn pure if each generation marries someone with pure blood.
Parkinson should come off the list, and Weasley should stay on for now. There’s no possibility of a male line that could produce more Parkinsons (applying the same logic as applied for Abbotts), but there’s a possibility that the male line could carry on through Charlie Weasley.
Emily Pan There is a possibility of that. However, the chances are very minimal considering that there’s a high likelihood that purebloods as a concept will die out. In DH, we’re told that that is already happening. And with the death of many pureblood houses after the war, especially the supremacists, it’s likely that in a couple of decades, purebloods will cease to exist as more and more people marry halfbloods and muggleborns. And with your example, Justin’s wife’s name would die out, even if his name lived on.
Someone who is born with a hyphenated last name could drop one of their last names later on. There could be an American Quidditch player who was born with two last names, even Rolf Scamander could have been born with two last names if the father was adopted and his adoptive father added his last name to the last name of their birth father. Where their birth grandparents were killed in the war against Grindelwald and took in by his aunt and later on after she married he was adopted by her and her husband. There are a couple of places in the first Fantastic Beasts film where this was implied.
there are still black descendants so even as a female they have the right to the name , its still valid if they want it

Male lines in fiction and real life have always been the focused but what if we looked at girl lines just like in original Charmed until Wyatt. Besides sometimes its the husband who changes his name instead of the wife, and sometimes there is no change.
Sifilore yeah its becoming a lot more common to not change the name and not even marry so yeah
Thanks for sharing this very interesting video it obvious that you put a lot of work in to not only this video but all of your Harry Potter Folklore videos. I'm glad that not of those who still remain on the Sacred 28 list are evil or cheating or disliking of muggles and muggle borns for instance Neville and Kingsley which in my opinion are two of the coolest one who are still on the list if the Weasleys were still on the list they be up there with Kingsley and Neville. Hope you have a great day and that you and yours are safe thanks again.
Such a unique fascinating idea!
Hey Dean, Garrick Ollivander is actually a half-blood and has two children (though one of them is recorded as having died). Much love. :)
Garrick Ollivander’s mother was muggle born making him a half blood and he has a living son and a deceased daughter and Felix Rosier is a living pure blood Rosier so the Rosier line is still pure
I love your Harry Potter videos
Now this... this is good content
