Condolences to you and your family.

My sincere feelings!!
Great vid love the series
R.I.P Dad. 97 years old that man lived! All the best. Remember the good times always.
Condclesces to you and your family. May your dad rest in peace.
Really enjoyed this week's video Matt. Just an FYI, the type of person that watches your videos doesn't mind up to 2 hours for one video. Your kind of material is basically the saga of an old piece of history being restored to glory in a world where the newer things just cannot compete in hearty work. People like myself are there with you, living vicariously through your efforts. It really is a wonderful thing.
Matt inspired me - I bought a 73 Sears suburban mower st16 ,I’m restoring it - loving it - have learned so much from him - never thought I’d love mechanics - nurse for 20 years
It doesn't do good monetarily tho, most won't sit thru a full 2 hrs. Just skip thru probably
I would watch 2 hours of his video content but probably not all in one sitting. Preferences would be two hour long vids or even more…three 45 minute ones. I know what I did with the math 🤫. The true key is the quality of the topic, and good editing.
YOU might like that kind of stuff but the youtube analytics say MOST people don't, and since he earns money from this i'm sure it's better for him to do shorter videos
@@j.sargent9172 That 40 minutes was gone so fast I didn't even realize the time. Matt should do a double feature on Saturdays....
That parts washer is worth its weight in gold. There is just something really satisfying about not having to cover yourself in filth and getting a clean part to work with
I cleaned my filthy engine with everything from scraping to brushing to degreasers to biological laundry detergent, even caustic soda (NaOH). It came clean but what a horrible job.
No need to apologize Matt for what you do or don't complete. This for me was a great episode of the Autocar. Sparks flying, metal cut, welding, torching, cleaning and fabrication. What we all tune in to see in your videos. I'll be watching for your next episode on whatever it is you're working on Matt and thank you for keeping us entertained. Cheers from this old, retired coot living the dream in Tennessee.
Hey Matt I was an instructor of Welding and Fab in a local trades college for 2 1/2 years and come from heavy fab, big beam compressor frame construction and cranes. When cutting thick materials I liked it as it taught patience especially with OXY/Acetylene. I also welded large pressure vessels as well as the port or nozzle cutting on the curve of the vessel with oxy fuel. I can see your skills in cutting your kerf is straight and patient. So many get impatient and do not allow the pre-heating of the metal before cutting of the metal structure. Less clean up with nice even kerf, a quick zip with the grinder or flap wheel and you are done. Great work and nice torch work!
I used to do NDT on all kinds of welds and pipes, etc. I'm not sure many of Matt's welds would pass the first "visual inspection" phase never mind the mag, rad or dye-pen.
@@alimackenzie2168 I’ve passed several X-ray and bend tests 🤷🏼♂️
It's not really required here as long as you have good fusion and no cold lap with little under cut on a semi static weldment. I will say his weld sequencing is out of whack where he does not tack evenly and thorough out before welding which can lead to distortion but really in the end he is the one that has to be happy with it and having done machine work and Pipeline work he has been around enough to make his way. I have taught thousands of students and his skills are better than most apprentices.
"If only I had an overnight crane..." Can't wait to see your garage with an overhead crane in place. I'm guessing 250lb for the hub/brake drum.
I used to work in a shop with an overhead hoist, and yeah, I miss it dearly. Rolling gantry cranes just aren't the same, though they're miles better than cherry pickers.
@ForfeMac my current shop has an overhead crane. We use it for pulling fifth wheel plates lol
To be honest, with that overhead crane beeing such an big piece of infrastructure, I thought it would be in place asap.. but Matt got other projects on his mind when he comes to his shop..
@@gijsvalk7302 Agreed.
I'm pretty satisfied with the balance of focus between Autocar and other projects. Don't really care how quickly you finish because the fun is in the journey.
Just to let you know Matt, it really doesn't bother us when you keep finding more and more things wrong. It just means more videos for us.😀
Matt, how much I respect you, man, for creating this channel. I admire the fact that, in addition to your professional work, you still have time to work with the camera and process the video material. Please don't change anything.❤❤❤❤
I appreciate that!
My 2 year old granddaughter watched the entire episode with me. You have a new fan.

That’s cool! My 1 1/2 Grandson just watched this video. He had his bob the builder hard hat his toy hammer and drill working on his dump truck. He’s definitely my little helper! Matt. Whilst I'm not an armchair critic, and also realise that you have in all likelihood moved past this stage, I have two comments to add.
1, Bearings are cheap and whilst you are in there changing them would be wise especially due to the seal failures and dirt ingress.
2. I would recommend that you cover the stub axles when fabricating near them, weld or grinding/cutting splatter can ruin a stub axel seal or bearing and then your day.
Keep up the great work. Jason.

I'm almost 80 and still try to do some welding and DIY stuff. I started working in a truck shop out of High School wrestled with those truck wheels and I was about 135# then. Wouldn't want to do that anymore, but glad I learned how and know how it all works. Great to see you working in your real shop with real electricity and glad the Auto Car is getting attention!
10 years from now I'll still be watching and probably be the same truck.
The white and blue ball is now an integral part of the project. You will have to keep it with the truck for the rest of its life to avoid problems, breakdowns, fender-benders and the like. The dog can just collect sticks and branches from your woods!

The 1957 Autocar is what brought me to this channel. Fun seeing the 1980 Autocar being worked on.
Totally 100% agree! I still have an Autocar T-shirt which I wear proudly here in Australia 🇦🇺. I sure would love to buy another for this 1980 version.

That custom frane notching for the Angle On the Back of the Truck frame for the trailers came out great Matt 32:21 @Diesel Creek
Matt reminds me so much of myself in the garage. Obviously, Matt is way more capable and knowledgeable than I am as a hobby mechanic, but his attitude and approach to problems feels like deja vu while watching. Love your channel and the long format repairs. I learn so much! Thank you Matt
Matt, as as a retired oo of 21 years, for your safety and the public and DOT. On all of your brake parts please do all your parts new, so you have know doubt you safe because you haul a lot of heavy 🧓 iron!! Be safe!! Ms T Ellis Ne. Glad your shop is working out!! God bless your family!!
Yes maybe not more money but definitely cleaner for shop personnel, well more money for the shop. Those cleaned pads are just as effective as new pads plus they already fit the drums.
@@samdunn1807 You cant clean the brake pads completely, because they are totally soaked and cleaning just effects the surface. If they get hot, all of the oil and brake fluid will cook out of the pads and and your whole braking is gone. Havent tried it with trucks, but several times with cars.
@@samdunn1807 I hope you don't work in my shop. Thinking like that, is what gets people killed. Old pads soaked and clean are a disaster for death!! If you don't have the money to do it right don't do it.
As a fleet supervisor my policy was to always go with new parts on brakes. Liability is too high when you get in an accident and you will get in an accident. Be safe out there.
@@samdunn1807 Once that oil/grease is in the pad material, the brake pads are chemically altered and no way to restore them. New is best and safety with the loads he hauls is top priority. I would rate breaks as more important than motor. No place to cut corners.

Hi Matt,
I am a retired chemist and am mightily impressed a single man with the right tools can take on projects like this pretty much by himself. You make the video magic appear effortless, and your spiritual practice of saving fine machines from insidious entropy makes you a Holy Man. I am riveted and so impressed with your talents. You opened my eyes to another facet of life I never understood and deeply respected. Thank you, Sir.
You have renewed my respect for the legions of men who "get er done" and keep this world spinning.

Love the “Grinder and paint, makes me the welder I ain’t” but I can promise you this, there’s not a welder out there that doesn’t have a grinder
@shawnjarman9860 My Gramma was more into carpentry than metal fab. She said, "Do your best & caulk the rest!"
@@DarkFlamage It seems every kind of skill has a similar kind of saying. I have no idea where I first heard it but someone was teaching me some useful knots for camping this past weekend when I remembered, "If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot."
Matt, My Dad a fleet diesel reuck mechanic and he always took the axel out and cut a ring close to the hub so IF the axel broke you didm't have to fish the end out. He also took a broom handle on each end to push out the nub if it broke in the spyders. Hope this helps you out some da.
"grinder and paint, make me the welder i ain't". the kids love when i say that!! 🤣
keep up the good work Matt, love watching your videos.
That tipping trailer in the thumbnail looks it will come in very handy for hauling gravel to the farm. Your JCB purchases at the last auction means won’t need to use trailer and AutoCar to move all the fill to level the yard and for your house.
Thanks for taking us along for the ride 👍
If the vent on the Banjo housing is stopped up it can cause seal failure. The fun starts when you R&R the walking beam bushing.Stay safe Matt
yes. hendrickson walking beam was very popular once but can be good fun to repair
That vent is a very important part and can cause all kinds of problems if not working properly. It should be inspected whenever checking fluid levels.
Matt, you may want to invest in a Plasma Cutter. It would make short work of all the metal you have to cut! Saves you a TON of time cutting (about 1/2 the time, even with dressing after the cut)! I always look for your Videos! I have watched every one of them for almost 3 years now (I have watched most of your old ones as well)! Can't wait for your next one (whatever it is on)!!
I just love this project, its gonna be one beauty of a truck when its finished
That is going to be a really neat truck once you get completely through it. Have always been fond of the Autocars.

The Hendrickson extended leaf walking beam suspension was the ticket for heavy on off-road trucks back in the day. I rebushed a lot of walking beams over a 20 year span, a labor intensive process, lucky yours are still in decent shape.

This is an awesome series. I'm truly enjoying watching you fix this old truck up. I drove one in 1979 for my dad and it had a 5x4 with a 290 Cummins watching you work on this old truck brings back a lot of memories for me. Thank you
You're wrong, Matt, spending time with you is a real pleasure. The Coach, we've been waiting for a long time, sure it's going to take time, but we know that when it arrives it will be perfect and will be of great service to you, especially with the Richie brothers! French friendships.
Matt I enjoy your videos wish I was 40 yrs younger any way does not matter to me if and when you get to finish a project. Any way as an retired truck mechanic a little advise. Never take your wheel wedge bolts all out. The lock ring on the rim could be broken and the tire could get you. Hammer the wedges when studs are loosened then remove. Diesel creek has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Big shop, all the tools, so much equipment. This autocar project is fun to watch.
Nice work Matt. Can't wait to see this old truck with a lick of paint and a new motor under the hood.

Matt ;
I think I would have taken it outside and hit it with an large air hose and then washed it . then took it inside for the next year. Big project I love to see it come back to life. You have to explane to us none truckies a 13 speed transmision.
And I see all that purposed yellow metal on that truck. It would be a very joyous day when that is all installed in the workshop - I am sure of that!
Coffee, Baileys and Diesel Creek…I love Saturday morning!!!
I love this series on the big ol' Autocar - such a great no BS tough truck!
Matt the job you did on the rear frame was fantastic. Loved the new look, you did a very pro job redesigning that. Not to mention the better functionality you'll get. You could cap that 6011 with 7018 for more strength and a smoother look. Just saying!
Old stuff always takes much more time.
Your doing fine…. You make all the disassembly, cleaning, thinking and fabrication look like good fun!
Priorities. Spark guards for the cab and floor. Sparks everywhere over the lunch table and microwave. Thanks for bringing us along Matt. Take care & stay safe.
Yah 😂 my poor microwave took some abuse. The plastic door will never be the same
Dam Matt you really just ripped the top off that can'o'worms didn't ya. Going to be a lot of content for us. Been waiting on this build, nice to see it underway. Thanks for the time to share with us.
I used to be in the wrecker business. That my friend is a pressed in shaft and the tool we used was a Tiger tool. Same thing, different brand. Dropping those shafts in the middle of winter at 2am on the side of the interstate sucked royally. Press side to side to get them loose then get on the one that pushes the best and they usually come out without too much grief.
Hi Matt I hope you get a knowledgeable Sandblaster that knows his job and also the correct finishes to use on your truck, from the looks of the rest of your equipment they are going to be able to have to stay for a while as well as a good body sheet metal man.
Love Love Love his truck, reminds me of my old days. Thanks for keeping the old girl alive.
Something you might want to add on the tail, is a pintle hook, quite handy if you need to haul a equipment trailer that is either too heavy for your dually or or into an area that is just too nasty to take that dually. You are doing it just the way it should be done, inspection, removal, replace, and in some cases, upgrade. Great Job Matt, Keep It Safe
Hi Matt, been following you for a couple of years now from over the pond in the UK, I love some of the hairbrained stuff you get into, don't sweat it about the having to jump about so often and feeling bad for not being able to post back to back videos on any one thing either, yours is one of the channel's I appreciate the most for the diversity of organic content that is daily life.
The progress you've made from containers to workshop has been great to follow, and your collection of eclectic machinery is nothing short of awesome. Hopes and dreams take hard work for some of us to turn it into a reality and you have achievement all around you, be proud my friend and don't change who you are.
Know the feeling of not wanting to dig deeper. Did the transmission on my father-in-laws 175 Allis-Chalmer last fall. Every time I thought I'd do an extra seal on the final drive or what ever I'd find more broken or worn parts. Finally got to the point I didn't want to look anymore.
Don't worry about this taking time from our perspective. It's just good to see this old truck being brought back to life. The partswasher is earning its keep. Cleaning the hubs would be hard manual work and being able to have these done while you get on with other areas is a real multiplier. Enjoyed this!
the back of those frame rails turned out awesome, great job, i like how you did it👍
Careful how much you cut off rear frame, some float stingers will not seat on top of the frame without shortening or modifications.
The slider can be used to make it work, but in winter weather it’s a big pain moving a slider every time you split the float, sometimes impossible in slippery snow and ice.
Love all of your videos and every of your projects. I'm an old disable man and watching your videos make feel like doing it. Thank you

There were few things I hated more than doing wheel seals, shoes, and S cams on truck and trailer brakes; it's all "neck down work", as we called it. You have my sympathies, Matt. Great video!
I can't wait to see the Autocar done. It's a really nice truck
I used to remove and install those Dayton hub/drum assemblies by hand by myself. Maybe that's why my back is shot. I always thought they weighed around 130 lbs. Dayton wheels came with a stamped cover that bolted inside the drum and surrounded the hub so if the seal leaked it wouldn't get on the brakes. Many times they weren't re-installed when the brake drums were removed or they rusted over time.
Great comment ❤ Same here with Dayton hubs. My back is shot too, amazing how strong a guy was looking back, didn't think anything of it at the time.

The good old days when; a sledge hammer, a blowtorch, an angle grinder, a set of sockets and wrenches, and pliers, screw drivers and a measuring tape could fix just about anything!!! If you didn’t have it , you could make it!!!

Hello from Michigan Matt, what a pile of work to do on this old rig. I can picture it all cleaned up and painted. I like this Autocar Construcktor, because when i was a kid, my grandpa drove for Melling Tool once he stopped growing crops, and leased the land out. His was the same color orange, and once in awhile he would give us a ride if he was moving trailers. With the shopping at the auction, you could probably use this to pick up your win's. This shop has got to make doing this so much easier than doing it outside. G-d bless, and can't wait to see this thing finished.
