Would you like to know if the Samoyed is the right breed for your lifestyle?
As each breed of dog has a unique personality, it’s important to choose the right breed for your family.
When deciding which breed of dog best suits your needs, be honest with yourself. Yes, a Samoyed is a beautiful looking dog, but that coat needs a large commitment from you, so if your first reaction is “No way, I don’t have the time or energy”, then that’s probably the decision to stay with, and go for a breed that’s not as high maintenance.

Samoyeds are THE BIGGEST people magnets! When you take them for walkies you'll be stopped every couple of minutes hahaha! But they need *loads* of excercise. Like really. I wouldn't have a Samoyed in an appartment, it's not fair on them. They need space and garden and they get very hot very quickly but *please* don't cut their fur. Their fur actually protects them from cold *and* heat (sounds counter-intuitive, I know, but it's true) and be prepared for your home to turn into Tumbleweed Town when it's shedding time. On the whole, they are the most beautiful, happy poochies, gentle and friendly and impossible not to love with your whole heart.

Agree 100%. Sammys get tons of attention. Would add not a dog you can just leave alone for long periods of time. They are pack dogs and get very lonely and upset when not with its pack that includes it’s people.

I had Samoyeds in an apartment. It's not that bad. I'd get home and taken them for a mile walks. In the morning, if it wasn't in a hurry I'd take them at least for a decent walk. I often brought them to work. When I went out to dinner to to meet friends, they would come with me. I live in California in the Bay Area - we have very good weather here, so when I went out to dinner, I always out outside.
The dogs are a lot of work.

I have a Samoyed and I can share my experience
    Cons:
-They are just too friendly with other dogs and people, that means on the walk they want to approach every single dog and go mental around them!
    - They can pull on walks really hard. You need a strong harness and double leash, one for chest and one for the back. They cannot walk calmly, they want to run and walk much faster than you which result in pulling. And it’s very difficult to train them against their instincts
    - They need a lot of attention. Just 2 walks is not enough. They need a lot of play physical and mental. They can also be very jealous
    Pros:
    - as a Con being very friendly is a Pro as well. They are very loving and friendly with every human and other dog. They never bark in order to defend their home. They welcome everyone and they will be happy if intruders come over.
I have 2 cats and kittens and my Samoyed is very gentle with them. Friendly and kind
    - They can be very obedient with the right training. Mine does most of my commands at home but outside the recall is not so good as they have a strong drive to chase and meet others
    - Very loving, friendly, kind and cute. They will love you more than anything and just want to be next to you

I would like to share my experience with samoyeds if someone is deciding on buying one. (My Samoyed is over 2 years old)
(IT'S BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE SO IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH ME, IT'S FINE ! EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT ❤️)
    To start with the CONS:
    - They shed a lot.. So just be prepared to clean your whole house every single day with vacuum cleaner, while during molting even twice a day.
    - Samoyed can be really and I mean really stubborn, so be ready to train your dog properly (I started training mine when he reached 4 months and we trained 2/3 times a week for 6 months)
    - This is really not a con, but also be prepared that they will take a lot of your free time. Some people may think that long walk is enough for them, but they have still so much energy that they will want you to play with them for another hour. And if there is no playing with the toys, my dog just wants to cuddle 24/7
    - Lastly, don't really go for Saymoed, if you want a dog for protection. They would rather cuddle with a thief instead of barking and going after him 😅
    - During summer or hot season, you can't really go out that much since they will heat themselves very quickly with that coat and it could hurt them later..
    Now about to PROS:
    - Samoyeds nature is from my point of view really nice a calm. I mean, they can run for hours and hours like beasts, but when you come home and it's time for some cuddles, they are the nicest and cutest beings on earth, believe me..
    - Their behavior around other people and kids is just so good. From my experience, my samoyed just loves other peoples company and kids aswell. If they could, they would like to have your company 24/7.
    - If you are looking for a dog, who will also keep you a company on some hiking, trips etc.., then Samoyed is perfect choice. They love to go on loong trips and with their energy and can lasts for hours meanwhile you are exhausted already, haha
Overall, I wasn't really sure about Samoyed when I bought one because I had doberman before, but as the time went by, I can say from the bottom of my heart that it was life changing decision. They are so beautiful, playful and with their smile they can change your mood whenever you feel sad. Also I can say that they can really boost your energy, it's just stunning. Lately my cousin and sister are deciding to buy one too when they saw my Samoyed and experienced his behavior and how nice dog he is.
So my advice is - If you are aware of these CONS/PROS and you still want one, definitely go for it ! You won't regret that 100%.

It took me 6 months to train a 95% reliable recall with mine and to stop him from running off as soon as he's off leash. Lots of patience, a big empty field/wood area, and using a treat he goes bonkers for. My friend's aussie however, followed him around day 1 and learned recall as soon as he learned his name 😂

Great video! My heart is set on a Samoyed, and I'm currently writing an independent research paper as personal notes/persuasion to my family for all relevant topics like initial and recurring cost, expectations, grooming, etc.
I might publish it after I finish, as I won't be getting my own dog for a good few years and writing this addresses bored and excitement. My household currently has 3 dogs (two family dogs 10+ and a young pit mix), and the oldest, a 12yro mix resource guards people a lot and introducing a puppy would be stressful for all parties involved.

I have a Samoyed. His attention span is so short. He will ignore you if he doesn’t want you. He is stubborn!! And tricky. And he can bark for hours straight. Cute dog but requires A LOT of playing and exercise. Can tire you out if you aren’t an active or energetic person by nature. Mine is very disabidient and loves to steal everything he can reach such as shoes, food, random clothes. Him making a mess often times drives me nuts. He likes to jump on me. You gotta be careful with what you can give him, he can get sick easily by many foods. I have also two cats but they cannot get along much cuz my cats are chill but he is VERY loud and noisy. That is my experience with Samoyed.

Actully their 33rd intelligence ranking... However I hold to that depends on how you rank the intelligence and also the individual dog. I have had many as my dad is obsessed with this bread and recently became a breeder. Our fist bitch was TO SMART they decide when and if they feel like doing commands/listening or find loop holes or ways to outsmart the system... Over all very easy to train our litter was house trained by week 5 and could give both paw by 6-7 weeks but getting them to follow commands when they don't want to can be another story as many have a stubborn streak, much bribery with treats is the key here! lol. They know they are beautiful and prance and are not above using looks to get food and or attention etc... They are like Nana form Peter pan with children though I have never seen a dog with better instincts to look after children. Apparently looking after children was one of their jobs and I can see that they are ridiculously gentil and protective (the story's I could tell

Perhaps a balanced and informative view of Samoyed dogs. If any of the following are not acceptable to you--throughout the life of the dog)--then I do not recommend owning one:
    1) These dogs need 24/7/52 companionship (i.e., continuous). These are NOT "latch key" dogs. If you're thinking about leaving them home alone then you must own at least two dogs, not just a single Samoyed. It is cruel to put them in a cage in your apartment or house alone for any time (more than 5 minutes). Enough said on this.
    2) Regardless of what you might read elsewhere, Samoyeds need to be bathed/groomed no less frequently than every two months if you live in the lower 48 states. This is a hard limit I've found empirically. I've listened to my groomer threaten me to take my business elsewhere if I try to extend that time interval to 2 months + 1 week. I'm not kidding. Unless you're a semi-professional groomer yourself and can keep the undercoat combed out on a weekly basis (or more often), the 2 month limit between being bathed/groomed professionally is a hard requirement. Don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise.
    3) These dogs bark a lot. I don't mean they bark more than your favorite breed or mix, I mean they bark A LOT more than any breed I've owned or experienced in my life. Their barking and vocalizations (more like yodeling) is one of the endearing qualities of our 3-year-old Samoyed Tex, and I miss it even for the short time he spends at the groomers every two months (about 6 hours start-finish on average at the groomers). If you live in a multi-family unit like an apartment, you will have constant issues with your neighbors complaining of the barking (and scratching the floor to make a "nest" to stay cool). It's the breed, so don't think you're going to "train it out of him/her" (it would be cruel to even try). They bark--a lot. It's very entertaining, and sometimes a bit grating, but it's like having young children around--they're loud. If you don't like it or otherwise can't tolerate this, don't own one.
    4) We own two border collies, too (they were here when Tex arrived as a gift), and they are often less demanding of having exercise/outings than our 3-year-old Samoyed. Yes--you read that right. He demands attention--like holding his paw and massaging him when he needs it (daily, a couple of times/day for 5-10 minutes) and this is in addition to 1.3 mile walks around the neighborhood--DAILY--i.e., 7 days/week. And that's not enough to keep him happy. Just like a human, he demands mental stimulation and new experiences. We go on car rides quite often--to different neighborhoods and parks. He's come to expect this at a minimum.
    5) Samoyeds are natural-born hunters. Think squirrels, cats, raccoons, opossums, armadillos, skunks, etc., that might happen to pass through your back yard (and I recommend not owning a Samoyed if you don't have daily access to ~1/4+ acre of free running room). So while they would never hurt you or anyone else, they will present you with animal trophies if given the opportunity. The white Samoyeds ("Bjelkier"--white dogs that breed white) are bred to hunt, herd, and pull large heavy objects (sleds) in addition to being amazingly gentle and loving family companions. This is the breed.
The "Pros" for this breed are the offsetting factor why we would be extremely sad to ever lose him. Samoyeds are kind, gentle, happy, deferential to their humans, loving, and noble dogs that will steal your heart. This is why I think the original handlers on the Arctic and Antarctic polar expeditions 100+ years ago brought them back with them--even if they were an extra burden on the logistics of their missions, and why we have the breed today. They are wonderful companions that will keep you laughing and loving them like no other dog you've been around. They are simply...good friends. They are also extremely intelligent--but not the "biddable" intelligence of border collies. These dogs march to their own drummer, and you'll both love and dislike this trait. They're just like children in this respect. I think of it as an indicator of their native intellect.

Breed standards kill the breed genetically. If you want to have the same dog over and over just clone it. Breed standards are just unnatural.

There are no cons to samoyeds and of you think so stick to cats. They're amazing. Very family friendly, protective, and can be used for sledding and hunting. They can fill any dog need you want.

It has to do more with dander. Sammies shed a ton of hair but very little dander making them hypoallergenic.

I don't agree with samoyeds and children. Simply not great with kids. Yes, if you socialize the heck out of them with enter children, then you are much much more likely to succeed. But far from a good choice for kids. Are you serious about the conversation starter thing? Come on. Anyone who wants a dog for that reason should not be allowed to own any kind of animal. I think an elephant or even a huge deadly snake would make a much better conversation starter.

So far all the Samoyeds I've met (including mine) have been wonderful and gentle with children.
