  • Very early divers had to be very involved in the sport as most equipment was hand made, like wetsuits. Alec shows how he ordered a wet suit kit in the mail, cut all the parts from a paper pattern, then glued each piece together into his very first custom built wetsuit in 1965.
    ** In this episode of Vintage Scuba **
    - wet suit kit ordered from "Central Skindiver's" of Jamaica, New York, USA for $19.95 USD
    - kit included a sheet of 1/8 inch neoprene rubber
    - divers cut their suit size following directions on a paper pattern
    - use the supplied glue to fit each piece together
    - finished wet suit was a jacket with beaver tail and high waisted pants
    - coloured stripping was $1.95 to cover all the seams for that "Cousteau" wetsuit look
    - rustproof zippers were $0.55 for a 6 inch or $075 for 9 inch

    You gotta love the old days!! You have to invest real time and effort in your hobbies and sports. This makes for greater satisfaction!! Nowadays, with the "fast food" mentality, and the society's quest for instant gratification, we lose this true pleasure of pursuing any certain hobby. Great video Alec (as always) !!

      Thanks God.
      It was fun in the old days when you had to understand how something worked to make it work.
      Now we just go to Google and let someone else tell us how to do it. No brains involved.

    That’s was great Alec. It’s great to see how scuba started out and how things where done then. Thank you for sharing the history and the love of the sport that you and all of us love to do. Thank you Kevin for all the hard work you do sir for filming and editing to make it all happen. I like to listen to the older divers because they know a lot and been through a lot with the diving in general
    Thanks y’all

      Yep! Make your own suit was very common and it was a matter of pride that a diver could say that he made it himself. Not any more. Pity!

    I was young at the time, I spent the Rent Money buying my first wet suit and my wife wasn't very happy about it, I use to stitch and glue any alterations I made, the training involved 13 weeks to become a Snorkel diver then progress on to air cylinders to become known as a S.CU.B.A. (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) Diver..
    Thanks for posting Alec it reminded me when I young fit and liked a challenge........

      Wow! Sounds like my course in 1960.
      We had to certify as a YMCA Life Saver first, then a YMCA Skin Diver and finally we got to try scuba.
      Long and difficult is the way scuba courses used to be but, I was determined to be a frogman like Mike Nelson.
      Thankfully those days are over.
      Take care.

    Those early patterns with high waist pants are still very popular with freediving and spearfishing.
    Also the smooth neoprene has a little advantage to nylon coating: it drys faster and therefore its chill effect is reduced when you out of the water.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 5 lety +1

      Skin 1 side, or smooth neoprene on the outside, is making quite a comeback partly for that reason and because it is thought to be faster for Triathletes.
      To me it's odd to see a neoprene rubber suit - we hated them so much long ago.
      But at least with the nylon inside it;'s easy to get on.
      Take care.

    Used to be an ad (80's) in Skin Diver magazine for a custom fit wetsuit, for some crazy low $. You;d take about a dozen measurements, and 6 weeks later you had a 1/4" rupper one side, fabric lined, custo suit!

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 5 lety

      I don't know of any patterns available for home made use. My pattern here is extremely fragile and one of kind. There are several vintage wet/dry suit makes online who will custom make one. Search Google for oceaner.com is one I did a video on.

    That's what i am. Total Involvment Scuba. And i havn't even done it yet. I'm trying to figure out what's the easiest way to breathe underwater. I'm against the tanks. They're big and don't hold that much breathing time. I'm constantly investigating tube techniques from land to sea. And there's no info on the subject! Which is rediculous given it's infinite air supply! People are more interested in "the places to be" than actually being underwatwer. I want infinite air. Airtime bums me out.
    Infinite air means infinite possibilities.
