I’ve been chasing leaks on a pretty old suit for months. Every time I find one I fix it and uncover a new one. Great way to learn drysuit repair though! I’ve almost done them all. The seam leak was the most interesting. No leaking air from in to out, using the air test you described, but water still entered multiple points of the seams while diving. How!? Microscopic one way valves? Increased pressure of water?
Those microscopic one-way valves are a real nuisance. Manufacturers install them to make you buy a new suit!!! Seriously, it may be simply that your suit is getting old & sending you a message. Dry suits (+ wet suit & BCDs) are made of fabric, like jeans or T-shirts. Eventually they wear out. If your dry suit is more than 10 years old, it may be time to retire it. More than 15 years old? Please be respectful & bury it with honors. A modern dry suit, solid but basic, can be had for less than $2000. That's $200 per year over 10 years. If you make 25 dives a year, meaning an active but modest diver, that's $8 per dive - $8 to be warm & dry. That's less than an air fill!! Stop spending your dive time fixing your suit!! Sell your old dry suit on Kijiji or Marketplace or a dozen other scuba auction sites for $200 & the first year of use is free. I used to give a Trade-In for any piece of scuba gear. Try it at your LDS. Good luck. Alec
A leak for me seems to be most often be a failing neck seal. To a new dry suit diver it may be hard to tell a front of the neck seal leak from a chest valve leak.
As an old dry suit diver from the stone age, I could feel water trickle down my neck. If it's the purge valve, it starts at my chest and goes down. Either way, not fun. A
6:46 I have a question about your Aqualung ? scuba knife where can I get one I need one pretty much exactly the same as this the only difference I think is the pamel is more of a teardrop shape and not round like yours . long story short my dad used to have one and he died when I was 13 and this knife was one of the things I used to play with as a kid and really brings back from memories of my dad but unfortunately when we moved house it got lost and I am searching for a replacement one any ideas where I can find one as I say it is exactly the same as yours but from what I can see the panel is slightly different
Search for the exact knife you're looking for & send me a picture. I'll ask my list of vintage divers if they have one for sale. Alec
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter thank you very much from what research I have done it looks pretty much the same as a play right vintage scuba knife but I have seen models that look exactly the same from Sweden & Japan nesco scuba knife both with inch ruler on one side from 1 to 7 in inchs ? From around the 60s
There are only two types of dry suit divers: Those who have already been wet inside their suit or those who will.
So true. I love wet suits, even with the 'temporary warmth'. A
I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge and demystifying so many of these tech topics.
Glad to help and hope you learned something new. A
I always say a drysuit is just a theory.
I say its just a suggestion, maybe dry, maybe wet, never know. A
when to stop tightening? when you hear a crunch!
Ha for sure. That crunch is the sound of a $100 repair bill. A
It's a damp suit on the best of days usually it's the neck or wrist seals not fitting right
As long as your not chilled by the end of the dive so maybe try a different neck seal make or less neck turning. A

Did You tube share the algorithm with you? How did you know I was just watching a bunch of Drysuit valve videos recently? There was a problem with the exhaust valve on my wife's suit so I bought the Valve removal tool to check it out. Turns out the rubber port came unglued from the suit and was deteriorated (only 2 years old) so I had to buy a new rubber port and glue it in. Problem solved and she has a dry arm. My suit on the other hand had a leak from the seam and needed professional repair.( again only two years old less than 20 dives on it) also I tend to leak from the neck seal because my head is always on a swivel.🌊🔍
I don't know about Google but we shot this in April and is the last of the videos we did at Dirty Adventures Scuba (love the name). Guess it's just good timing! A
Who made your suits?
Nice info you can use a friend in the suit instead of soda bottles 😅 but don’t spray is face to much with the soapy water 💦 😅 😊
Aww, what fun is that. A
Greasing works for a whole host of issues with these. I have to grease mine up before the weekend since i had unrestricted air flow after connecting. Luckily my dive buddy does a bit of boxing and was able to punch it to stop the flow. Sadly, it took me a bit longer to get a flow of air into my lungs. Didnt help him shouting, "right in the kisser."
Sounds like a fun dive, and a fun buddy! A
Very interesting! I’m gonna go take a peek at my DUI exhaust valve and see if I can take it apart and give it a quick clean

Very professional and simple plus educational You mention that the Hydro test is every 5 years Unfortunately In Australia the most over governed over legislated diving industry in the world I am not sure if it is the aim of the government to destroy the recreational diving industry in Australia Many dive shops are closing in Australia not due to safety but excessive bureaucracy I personally have been a Dive Instructor since 1983 I no longer teach diving in Australia I am sure the diving industry in America is as safe or safer than Australia Its a shame we have great diving If you are interested to see what we dont want for the diving industry in other parts of the world have a look at To show you how absurd this legislation is A recreational SCUBA Instructor must have a Commercial Diver medical form a dive physician Imagine if you had a dive school like I did with 50 cylinders and they have to be hydro tested every 12 months plus an eddy flow test For reference www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/your-industry/diving-and-snorkelling/diving-laws
Hey Alec amazing video explanation! I was thinking if you could do a video in the future, about Dacor's Modular system 1st stages.
If i can get more than the one I have now, will add it to the ideas list. A
Stick with your guide, don't make everyone have to listen to a noise maker just because you saw a fish... I would never use one underwater... Have trouble, head up, don't have problems... Shut up and let us enjoy the dive. The bc beep is actually useful if in trouble but tank slappers and shakers are often misused and are annoying on a dive.
My suggestion is if the last dive was "loud" with bangers, ask the guide/DM to say "only if never seen by a human before" can you bang. Otherwise, quiet is better. A
Please post more long videos, we love these in dept information sessions.

Any ideas for weights for a bcd that doesn’t have weight pockets? I have a quick release weight belt designed for the bagged weights 🤔
If your BC does not have integrated weights then a belt solution is needed. It can hold hard weights or have pockets to put soft weights into. Depending on your body and amount needed, belts could be more comfortable and better balanced than BC's. A

Helo Alec. I have been noticing Lots of DIY Mini Scuba Tank Fills, Hookah units on CZcams. Most of them from the last couple of years. Just waiting to see how many Injuries are caused but them. Breathing Gas here in the US is Grade E. I have a Nomad unit I use to fill my Spare Air 6cf. I am also using additional Filters. Including Charcoal. I can get it Legally filled with my PADI OW Card. It takes longer to drive to the shop than to fill it.
Like many things, if used as directed (shallow depth, with a buddy), it can be fun. But it does not beat a proper scuba filling system or even filling from a scuba tank. A
I just launched my own customizable dive log app, available for free on iOS--Digidive. Eventually it'll be available on Android, be able to sync to dive computers and have a wildlife identifier as well. Current available features include a wish list and 10,000+ built in dive sites, with the ability to add your own, too. I hope you give it a try!
I've watched this a few times and the one piece of information that i feel is missing is the funtion of the second stage of the regulator in modern single hose setups. In the middle of the video it mentions that the first stage provides you with gas at 150psi plus ambiant pressure, but you don't notice because of ambiant pressure on you and your lungs. This is not so. It provides gas at 150psi plus ambiant pressure to the second stage, not your lungs. The second stage then provides gas to your mouth and lungs AT the ambiant pressure of the water at the depth of the second stage regulator (in this example 12.99psi freshwater 13.35psi salt water at 30ft (14.7psi at 33ft or 10m). So if you are in proper trim (face down or up) your second stage regulator is at the same depth as you lungs and delivering air AT the same ambiant pressure exerted on your lungs and everything feels normal (13.35psi). Breath in breath out. Salt water psi per foot is 0.445 (fresh 4.33psi/ft). If you are face down with regulator deeper in the water column than your lungs it will deliver air at a higher pressure than the ambiant pressure surrounding your lungs and inhaling air is easier.... BUT exhaling is sligtly harder. Conversely if your second stage is at a shallower depth than your lungs (face up or body positioned vertically in the water) it delivers air at a pressure that is lower that the ambiant pressure on your lungs (0.445psi/ft of depth difference between the 2nd stage reg and the bottom of your lungs), making it harder to inhale, BUT easier to exhale. This demonstrates why neutral level trim in the water is beneficial becaue both inhaling and exhaling are all at the same pressure as the ambiant pressure on your lungs. Face down or head down tilt will make it easier to inhale, bht more difficult to exhale. Face up or head up trim (sitting upright or vertical in the water) will be harder to inhale but easier to exhale. This all applies to systems where the second stage is in your mouth, rather than behinde your head.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. For anyone else reading this helpful tip, please correct the fresh water psi/ft, not 4.33. Well said. A
Hello Alec , love this channel . I have been wondering about this , but my experience is , like with the others , is the opposite, I find it harder to breathe on my back , facing the surface . My theory is , when on our back facing the surface , the air inside the 2nd stage wants to go up , so will end up pushing the 2nd stage diaphragm outwards , making it more difficult to “suck” the diaphragm in , hence making it a little more difficult to breathe . Just my thoughts .
Hi to all who have commented on this seeming discrepancy. While your suggestion about the air wanting to push up sounds logical, the various pressures affecting the regulator overcome this. Realize that the water pressure is pushing down on the 2nd stage diaphragm too. The reason that you may experience a reverse sensation is simply - you are using modern, very sophisticated regulators. The phenomena I discussed was a very regular concern on older regs, VERY noticeable on 2 hose regs. New regulators have all but overcome the problem except in the very simplest, basic, unbalanced regs. You actually do get some benefit from buying a more expensive regulator! Someone questioned whether the Intermediate Pressure changed. It does. On the surface it is usually close to 150 psi but, the design of a regulator accounts for the water pressure as a diver descends. The IP increases in direct proportion to the water pressure. That is, at 33', assuming the water pressure is 15psi, that will be added to the base IP of 150 so the the actual pressure at 33' will be 165psi. However, that is moot to this discussion other than the following: the regulator provides an IP equal to the base pressure (say 150psi) PLUS the surrounding (ambient) water pressure. This is all measured at the 1st stage. So, when the 1st stage is lower (deeper?) than your lungs & 2nd stage, the pressure on the 1st is greater so the IP is greater than that required. Air flows more freely into your lungs. When the 1st is higher (not as deep) than the 2nd, the IP will be slightly less. You have to work a bit harder to get air out. With a 2 hose reg where both the 1st & 2nd are one unit, this effect is exacerbated. Turning from face down to face up with a 2 hose reg, raises the unit the better part of 2' - a big change in water pressure & subsequently a big change in the IP. I hope this helps . Alec
Hello , love your channel , I have been wanting to ask my dive instructor friend about this , but like the others , I experience the opposite , harder to breathe when I am completely on my back facing the surface. My theory is , when we are on our back, face up , the air inside our regulator wants to go up, exerting more pressure on the 2nd stage diaphragm , making it more difficult to “suck” the diaphragm in , so a little less air from the 2nd stage .
Alec
When Navy frogpeople and public safety divers start using pink Seawing Novas, I'll consider them; until then, I'm sticking to my black RK3s.
The reason I used pink was it was the brightest colour that had to compare to the black rockets. Only Kevin and girls dive pink!! A

Hello i have 2L smaco tank and smaco compressor, does that set needs open valve for refuil? I appreciate your time reading my comment and hope for the answer, João from portugal
YES! The hose should be connected to your tank, the purge should be closed & then the tank valve opened & the compressor started. When the tank is full, shut off the compressor, close the tank valve, purge the hose, disconnect the tank. Alec
I love the resourcefulness and can-do approach! Your experience shows
Thank you very much. A
My understanding is that the first stage will always supply the second stage with the same pressure, regardless of depth. It maintains this pressure as the tank pressure decreases. When face down, the second stage sees a higher pressure than your lungs and flows more easily as its 'deeper' In my experience, face up is harder to breathe. Regardless, great video and it'll certainly open up a discussion 👍
Apparently is has. A
