      No worries. Boulder is actually pretty easy to understand pricing. Carat weight doesn't matter making it easier. Nick has great medium sized pieces for about 10-15 a piece on a regular basis.

    I have to ask. If this parcel is worth $250, how much is a solid Boulder that weighs about 90 pounds worth? I bought it for $200

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  Před 2 lety

      Boulder opal isn't sold by weight it comes down to the potential of each stone in a parcel. Since this video, prices have gone up significantly but you can still get good deals (especially from Nick Hoops). a 90 pound boulder could be worth $0 or a small fortune but would need to see it to be able to determine a rough price.

    I wonder what that would cost today, four years later?

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Nick would still give it to me for $250 I would hope 😆
      I think in 4 years the price of my fave stone has just about doubled which I guess is good and bad.
      I don't even recommend $250 for beginner parcels anymore. I find better value at $500 but that is starting to become a big commitment for most.

    I was wondering if I am really seeing cheytoyance on the first large price of boulder opal? Do you have a video on treating the fairy opal?

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  Před 2 lety

      I dont have a video yet but have been meaning to get around to it. I tend not to work matrix type opals much so haven't gotten around to it yet.

      Very nice boulder opals and agree, hard to film raw matrix opals.. Any progress with those fairy opals?

  • @mattsmith6321

    Hadn't even heard of fairy opal. Do you treat it like matrix opal with sugar and acid?

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah sugar and acid or sugar and heat or oil and heat. Sugar and heat seems to be the most popular in current times. I need to get around to showing treatment processes on the channel for people. I myself dont like treating stones much.

    how do you deal with the gypsum over the colour Roy? does it turn white again with time or do you seal it?

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  Před 3 lety +1

      Gypsum is a interesting one. It would depend on the piece but a lot of the time there is not much that can be done unfortunately. You can get lucky and grind it away.

    Please explain 'treated' as that fairy opal appears more a fairytale than a usable stone.

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi. Fairy opal is a wild beast and though it looks like rubbish now once finished it will come up well. There will be future videos on this very topic with a full explanation of each step along the way. In the meantime I'll link you something from opal auctions to show you how it comes up.
