That's some stunning color, it compels you to keep looking at it cos you get subtle variations of color when you view it from different angles, like that purple that showed up at the end, mesmerizing.

I probably would cut two smaller stones out of the blue part, which are then without fractures. This would also help to get a flatter angle on the individual pieces. And maybe one could even get an thin 3th piece, but I probably wouldn't do that to save more of the 2th smaller blue stone.. But that's not easy to tell by just seeing it in a video, not knowing the dimensions. I'm sure you will find a good way.

(Blue, blue and blue) Hey about these slices I've seen a short of a guy slicing with a diy fixed flex shaft and a diamond disc (two pipe holder screwed on a wood desk) some asian jade carvers also use the flex shaft screwed to a table trick but I've never seen someone use it as a trim saw. Just need a drip to it.
@@RoysRocks I've seen it in many videos and in person a couple of times it's only two stamped steel (hardware store stuff)1/2 pipe clamp on the flex shaft against a flat surface (vertical or horizontal) it's a semi-permanent setup. Hello again, Roy. I just got 1.3kg of boulder opal which is all boulder and no opal. It came with a gift of a piece the size of the one you worked on in this video. That piece has about as much white as you have blue here but it's pure white with a little smear of yellow and it looks like a little bit of fried egg landed on it. What to do with it, any ideas? The seller is on Facebook and tried pitching me another "parcel" with more of the same, plus a piece with a hole for a string through it, for another $270. I know that you won't get anything "precious" for that price but how can they list pure boulder as boulder opal? I expected little hairline veins of colour at least, did I have my hopes too high?
Your hopes are not too high. Even at just a couple hundred bucks you should get a few good stones that are worth working on. I think I know what you mean by the white and yellow fried egg look that you can get in Boulder opal (I have seen a lot of that). Will silicone carbide or aluminum oxide work for grinding these? Will nova tips work on sapphire too? Cause I'm a madman for Aussie gems. Got some Rubyvale high grade rough sapphires, working to get some boulder " gamble rough " And looking for a good price on a small parcel of lightning ridge knobbies . I'm a newbie so I'm not entirely sure about what works and what doesn't
Silicone carbide can work but I haven't had great results with it. Aluminium is very good for the polish as it can shine the ironstone quite well. Nova tips vs sapphire should work theoretically as it is just diamond grit in resin but it may be rough on them as the resin is pretty soft. LR rough knobbies are quite expensive as soon as they show potential so may just need to start with some "potch and colour" parcels at about $250AUD.

I honestly didn't notice the lilac until after the 3000 grit. That prepolish really brought it out of nowhere.

Cutting boulder makes me think I might like pottery making. Removing the mud is very therapeutic.

The ironstone is really nice to work with. Comes away like butter but can make a muddy mess which is half the fun.

There are many options with boulder opal so do what feels right and looks the best.
Its such an underrated variety of opal!
Nice job Roy, those fractures are annoying, but part of opal I guess. I have a few nice big stones that have ended up as nice smaller stones.😀

Yeah it's not a big deal. Of course full faced is best in terms of value but sometime an inclusion can add a bit of character to the piece.

Looking at the stone with the blue on the top it looks ks good as a picture. Perhaps keep the whole thing as a pendant
I actually can't remember if I ever sliced the excess ironstone away... If might still be in one piece in the collection.

You helped me learn an unspoken trick . Do not wipe the mud off constantly, it holds water well. Only wipe when you need to see details.
No worries. The best way to go is to have running water but that makes a mess of my filming unfortunately.

slice its straight edge on the crack and make two small stone, possibly pairs!
