Throughout the 90s, Midway was on the up. The coin-op developer had achieved global fame (and a degree of infamy) with its blood-soaked beat 'em up, Mortal Kombat, but that wasn't their only major success during this period.
NBA Jam, a hyper-stylised take on 2-on-2 basketball proved to be an equally iconic release, perhaps more-so for the slew of home console conversions than the actual arcade game. I never got to see the arcade machine back then, let alone play it. I rented the Sega Genesis version at some point, and I still have the original cartridge for my Sega Game Gear; that version was really good fun too, as I recall.
Trying the arcade version for the first time, it's remarkable just how well the game holds up. The control scheme is extremely simple to pick up -- there's even a brief tutorial the first time you play -- and the digitised graphics, now a staple feature of Midway games of this era, still look cool, even with the player's oversized heads stitched somewhat incongruously atop their bodies. Crucially, the decision to license the major teams and key players from the NBA at time was a big deal; being able to play as your favourite team and dunk some hoops, complete with over-the-top commentary was a major selling point. The machine also keeps track of your wins and losses through when registering your initials, which would have added a genuine sense of competition if you found a cabinet at your local hang-out.
As for the game itself, it's a slick interpretation of basketball, albeit with the limit of two players per team. It features most of the rules of the real sport, including shot clock, goal tending, 3-pointers and more. Fouls are most definitely allowed here, however, which is just as well - shoving really is the key to victory here, and players are encouraged to be as unsporting as possible.
By default, the CPU takes charge of the second player on the team, taking care of movement around the court. When in possession of the ball, you can instruct the CPU to pass or shoot by tapping the appropriate button. All too often, sports games fall down due to incompetent AI, but giving the human player a degree of control over their teammate makes a big difference here.
There's really little negative to say about NBA Jam, other than it would have robbed you blind on the stock settings. Costing 8 credits to play through a whole match, you'd need deep pockets if you wanted to play every single team in the NBA, that's for sure.
Aside from the unscrupulous shakedown, NBA Jam remains an excellent arcade title, and great basketball game - BOOMSHAKALA!

@@ilkvomit88 Jordan owned his name and likeness so that's why he wasn't in the game. Later in the home ports Shaq and Barkley were removed for that same reason.

NBA Jam is one of the main reasons why i like basketball so much (but ironically i don't watch too much NBA nowadays, im sticking with cibacopa, LNBP both mexican leagues and the filipino league) anyways, this game was great! probably one of the best sports games of all time

Here's your early 1990s childhood on a platter. In 4K. Because that's a thing now. Lol. For the record, I always played as the Seattle Supersonics and made Shawn Kemp dunk entirely too many times. Lol. I'm from Oklahoma, and the Sonics eventually moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder. Go figure. Lol. 👍

NFL Blitz is the football version of NBA Jam.
I agree, i had this game on the mega drive/genisis. The only sporting game, with no rules just pure gameplay action. Plus breaking the law of gravity, with those slam dunks! Awesome.
Are you going to play the whole league? I'd recommend better Tournament Edition for that, tho.

The best part of NBA Jam was if you attempted a dunk in the dying seconds and time ran out. The announcer would say "BAD DECISION!"
Now the next thing is “campaign mode”: playing the other 26 teams.

I broke this game at the arcade by being shaq and timing the jump perfectly to do a goal tend without it being called a goal tend lol. Grown men would cry and call cheating…I was 14 years old taking away their manhood lol

2010 or 2011 a new version on many platforms. And mobile (Android).
But! Soon, it appeared a better version called “NBA JAM on fire edition” which was the best one so far until then. (Sorry for my mistakes, very sorry of my english; I 'm not an english speaker)

I 'll try to write something. 2010, maybe (if I remember) appeared a new version, for Playstation 3, and X-Box 360, was pretty good, better than the first one (the original) but not as much as we waited.
(Sorry for my mistakes).
Soon, very soon, they published an other similar version, called “NBA JAM, on fire edition”, which was the BEST version (of all) so far! But, they sold it unfortunately ONLY via internet! Not in a box.
They published that version on phones, too. In my language, I would be able to explain better, now I just hope... not to make great mistakes on grammar, or in explanation. Sorry, again.
This (on fire) was the best version, THAT version we want to find, and play! EA stopped this version! We can' t find the game anymore, and install!
I saw recently some great videos with an amazing newer “hacked” version, called “NBA JAM - LEGENDS”. But, I am afraid, that it' s a mod ONLY for the lucky owners of a PLAYSTATION 3.
I do not know other details. I did not find a way to have this game.

For some reason NBA hangtime looks much better, and have better sound and music compared to this. It doesn't even look like the Arcade, it looks and sounds more like a Genesis lol.
