- In this video Greg Macke -Your Car Angel does a long term used car review on the 2012 Hyundai Elantra with 100k mile. This is the 5th generation Elantra outfitted with the technology package and the 6 speed transmission. It has navigation, Bluetooth and the backup camera.

Never any problems
I've got a 2013 with around 90,000 miles. Bought it used at 50,000. Pretty happy with it! No big issues, just general maintenance. Definitely should have got one with leather seats though the cloth in the base models does not age well.
Same 2013 Elantra with 106k miles. Running like new

For anyone looking to buy a used 5th gen Elantra, here is my experience. I bought mine used with 50k miles 4 years ago from a somewhat shady used car lot. Since I bought it, I've kept up regular maintenance (fluid changes and basic wash and wax to keep it nice) but drive it as my daily ~60 miles. I now have 110k on it and here is what I've seen so far:
Cons:
Piston slap, not horrible but you can hear it
Long crank when trying to start most likely caused by timing chain guides being old
Random hard shifting between gears when it's hot outside. Most likely caused by a bad temp sensor in the transmission
Clear coat peel on the door handles
Rear seatbelt lock broken
Pros:
Interior is still holding up well.
Most of the paint other than the door handles is in great shape.
Engine still seem to run strong and has decent power
COST - Never had to do a big repair job, everything up to this point is just fluid changes. Tires are super cheap for the 16" wheel
Gas mileage is great! I average 32 miles with mixed town/freeway driving
Overall, I have enjoyed this car quite a bit. The traction control sometimes causes issues when you loose grip. It will basically slow the car WAY down, so be careful if you're pulling out quickly from a blind spot and have old/balding tires. Get good tires, and you wont' have that issue. Does good in snow, again get good tires. Otherwise, it's a great commuter that can haul the kids around and I don't feel like I'll break down.
My 2011 Elantra has 108k on it and is still running strong.

I have a 2013 Elantra Coupe that I bought brand new in Jan '13, and I love it! Due to my work, It doesn't get a lot of miles on it (currently 13k after 5 years), so it's good to know it will last me a long time! It is comfortable, reliable, looks good (better than the new gen6 2017+ Elantra), and has all the features I want/need.
Finally, a car review without wind interference on the audio.

I have a 2014 SE with the preferred package and I have 35k miles on her. Glad to hear that the car is still running like new with 100k. As far as the interior though, I would think that it will hold up as well as the car is treated by the owner. I personally take good care of my care and detail her all the time and I don't allow any food or drink (except water) in my car. Some people - not so much, and their car after only a year looks like it is much older and worn. Good review though.
I bought my Elantra in 2012 and in 2022 I have over 252,000 miles on my 2012 Elantra and the only major issue I've had with it was the crank sensor and that was replaced a month ago. Other than that, just maintenance. The air still blows cold and the engine still doesn't lose its oil level and it gets changed every six thousand miles going full synthetic. I've owned Toyota's, Nissan's, Mazda's, Buick's, Chevy's, Ford's and Chryslers and none of them have held up as good as this car when it comes to reliability. The one major service that will cost will be when I will have the timing chain replaced, the tensioners, gears and water pump, and that service comes soon. No, that service is not cheap but by doing so, you preserve the longevity of the engine.

No use 5w-20 full synthetic (high mileage), only use 5w-30 if you drive in a very high temp location.

My mother bought a brand new Sonata in 2000. She sold it after 100.000 miles. She got one issue only : one battery to change.

I traded in my 2003 Sentra and my 2009 Hyundai Accent last December for a nice blue 2014 Elantra SE sedan with 87k miles. I love the car.

This vehicle is very clean, I love a clean automobile, this vehicle is highly reliable, you can get over 300k miles on this vehicle easy with rountine maintenance.
My 2011 Elantra has 546978 km's. It's still going strong.
I've done the routine maintenance on it, and I am still driving it to this day.
I think it may outlive me!

Hhahahha my wife bought a brand new one just as they received shipment at our dealer. They were selling like hot cakes. My son inherited it and with close to 100k highway miles p, it’s only needed regular maintenance, a new battery and new brakes and a new set of tires. The only major issue was a pinhole leak caused the radiator fluid to almost run dry. Dealer fixed under extended warranty. Sons being sons both my boys have driven “ moms Korean sports car” at surprisingly high speeds on long stretches of open road and swear that the car handled superbly. Yes this ones going to be a keeper. I support and endorse your review and recommendations.
Have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT with 97k miles. I brought it for $6200 with 78k miles. This was the previous owner first car so it needed some tlc on the exterior. I replaced the sway bar end links and potentially need to replace the lower control arm ball joint since it's squeaking a little bit. Did the typical steering coupler and brake pedal stopper. Cheap and easy repairs.
Mine has 300'000 kilometres it's been a beautiful car it has had the 1.8 litre death rattle for well over 100'000 k's but we weren't so fortunate in Aus we didn't get replacement engines jut hope and pray technology but prayers are answered it's still strong and efficient thumbs up
my daughter had one a 2013? she drove it until it got close to 100K miles and traded it on a SUV (just wanted something taller) the car ran flawlessly
This style was the most eye catching design for any small car of those years by far and the sales prove it. Hyundai Elantra sales went through the roof and started to even make Honda and Toyota nervous. Now they are not worried in the least, as sadly, just as the model was perfected with the 2015 and 16 models, with the 2017 model Hyundai dropped all the futuristic fluidic sculpture design and reverted back to the large open mouth grill of the Ford Focus and Fusion with straight, bland lines, and sales have plummeted. They are having to quadruple the buyer incentives and discounts to move the new design. The North American Division is losing money on it. Plus this model has the tried and true DOHC engine that is proven for longevity and gets the exact same MPG as the new one with the same hp. The newer model has GDI and is proven to not be built for longevity as the DOHC engine has always been.

You're right about the design.. I actually just commented about this.. Why the 2021 model upward has the new design with the defined shapes.. It will age well and looks very different from a lot..

The biggest improvement you can make to these Elantras is replacing / upgrading the rear shocks and front strut assemblies. I replaced both at 114K and the car handles now like it's on rails. Doesn't leak, doesn't make funny noises and starts and stops like it should - not bad for a $4600 used car!
Fish On I couldn’t agree more. I replaced the struts and shocks at about 120k miles and the car rides like new!
What brand did you replace it with? I used Kyb struts and shocks. Drives like a dream now!! 👍
The struts and the coil spring after 80,000 miles to 100,000 need to be replace because the coils spring fatigue , it all depends of conditions of the roads and the type of weather, here in Cleveland Ohio the salt damage your struts , coils I have a Volkswagen Jetta 2012 with 110,000 miles 95% freeway and I coil spring broke so I decide to replace the struts and spring coils hey thanks for the review

I saw this video n went to two elantra sellers. They had mechanically lil problems. But worst part is many interior color faded. I think this car is best in non-hot countries
My 2011 is just about at 117,000. Just came up with a P0011 which is Timing over-advanced code and I hadn’t switched out the timing belt yet so I guess it’s time. The camshaft sensor A intake P0340 went out at the same time, which is super easy to replace. The only thing that bothers me about this car is the suspension jumps around from the very beginning which I bought used at 25,000. It’s been talked about on youtube. I believe Hyundai fixed the problem in years after 2011. That’s all that’s happened with this car. Body style still great in my opinion. Paint is beautiful!
Judy L this car has a timing chain not a belt that requires changing usually. Don’t assume, talk to your dealer about the issue.
Went to a local dealership to take a look at 3 cars and saw a 2012 Elantra Limited had just been traded in. It really caught my eye and once I took it out for a test drive I forgot all about the other cars I went to look at. It has 122k and is Desert Bronze just like the one shown but the interior is cream and black only. I'm really impressed with this car, and I hope it last many more years!

@@RRLV434 overall fine. However, recemtly there is a recall on the car for fluid leakage. I faced this same issue in 4th month of my purchase earlier in the year.
Thinking about buying a 2013 Hyundai Elantra limited in a couple days! It has 107,000 miles on it and only about 6900! No accidents, no nothing! Test drove it and fell in love!

I'm watching this video in 2018, nowadays in Brazil a 2012 entry model is about R$ 47.000,00, which means that even in 2012 in the US, a new one was cheaper than a used one here. Sad but true
I have a 2011 elantra touring and a 2012 elantra touring. The 2012 has 130k miles. All I've ever done is change the clutch the oil pads and rotors. Best car I have ever owned.
What weight of engine oil and transmission fluid do you use?
@@MyLifeThai371 umm I think 5w20 synthetic for the oil. Quaker state. That's what the user manual recommends. Both of my elantras are manuals. I had thr clutch changed in one but didn't do the work myself so not sure what brake/trans fluid they used.

I have a 2014 Elantra. At 48,000 miles, one of the valves was losing pressure. After about 4 trips to the dealership, they decided to replace the engine. I now have about 133,000 miles and the paint is bubbling and flaking off in multiple places. Mechanically, it seems to be running fine, with the newer engine. But the paint issue is going to take the already plummeted value of it right down to $1000 or $1500 bucks. Basically I will be keeping it as my commuter hooptie.

The paint on these cars isn't good. I have same issue but mine has 152k. My engine seems solid but the transmission failed recently and finding one has been difficult

@@JahdielSaneo I had a 2014 until recently. Transmission was shot at 152k. Rebuild was about 4k. No point in keeping the car and used transmissions were hard to locate. So I sold it below market valur.value. paint had clear coat peel and interior had wear on drivers seat. All in all if you can pick one up cheap go for it. Otherwise I would avoid
Is the brakes sensitive in the elantras? In the sonata, they are super touchy, soft and sensitive as heck. You cannot press on the gas or break to hard.
My Elantra has exceptional brakes - I did upgrade to ceramic pads and the brakes are strong, quiet, easy to modulate and very little dust. Probably the best brakes I have seen on an economy car.

My Elantra 2013 has 361,000 k on it I bought it for $1,600 from the junkyard I put $11,000k on it it has bad piston slap but it's still runs in a Canadian winter. Top of the line winter beater for sure

That was the Sonata engine and more specifically the GDI engine and more specifically the turbocharged engine. Also known as the second generation Theta engines that are 2.0 and 2.4 liters. The Elantra uses a completely different engine...

I have a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, 114k, oil changed every 6500 miles, battery died once, no other issues at all, small but so reliable. Gas mileage has changed my life $35 still gets me about 415 miles. Great on the highway!!

@@JahdielSaneo currently at 140000 miles. Rotors and front tire rod needed replaced. I have a mechanical issue, my turn signal bulb housing might be damaged, it continues to blink fast and I’ve changed it. Still very reliable.

@@JahdielSaneo rotors done around 70000 miles and tire rods around 130000 for me. I’ve definitely noticed how loud other models(other elantras) sound compared to mine, I definitely think keeping up with the oil was smart.

The engine issues were because of quality issues with the manufacturing of the motor where metal shavings destroyed them, from what I've read. It you find of these with 100K miles on it, obviously, it did not suffer from the engine recall issue. Those issues would have shown up long ago. Great used buy.

My 2012 Elantra has 68K miles, and runs well. It has a clunking noise in the drive train, that I haven't been able to locate. Any ideas?
Take it to the Dealer under warranty
I took it to a local (not Hyundai dealer) dealership. They raised it up and inspected it, and couldn't find anything to account for the clunking noise. Apparently not the CV joints.
alneal100 ... When do you hear the noise? While accelerating, braking, turning, on bumps, shifting, etc?
I hear it while accelerating through the gears, or pulling away from a standstill. It doesn't make the typical noise that CV joints make, when maneuvering into a parking space. It does make a similar noise to what CV joints...or U-joints make......but not in the same set of typical circumstances. It is absent at highway cruising. Even passengers can notice the sounds.
alneal100 ...Doesn’t sound external, and likely not a quick fix. Your best option would be to take it to Hyundai and have them test drive it. If it’s the trans, it should be covered under the 10yr/100k mile warranty.

The Corolla doesn't have as many features in standard trim form and the old models don't look as good, but mechanically they've been as good as it gets for decades.

Mine broke down due to electrical issues shortly after 112k miles. Most likely a crankshaft sensor fail, but won't know til I get it looked at. Bought it used at 60k miles.

Idk why but the perople say that thes brand doesn't work but I got 2012 3lantra 20000 miles on it and my car still run good , I am happy cuz I bough a good car , and my wife bough a Los optima ex 2016 and it's nice car beautiful but I don't believe that car can be better reliable that elantra ,well that's my humble opinion.....

Piston slap, engine stalling. I think it's due a recall based on the ABS system
I like this car. BUT, when children sit in the back seat, NONE of the the AC or heat finds its way to the back,resulting in asthmatic children and small toddlers and babies to overheat. I feel that the manufacturer of this car brand should put AC and heat vents in the back seat of the vehicle, so it will assure that the children are getting as much heat and air conditioning as the much older adults are. Parents seem to direct the air towards themselves and not the back. Just something to think about. Thanks for listening.

wrong both the 2011 Cruze and Jetta had 6 spd autos, actually the Jetta had a 6 spd auto since the MK5 debuted in 2005. Also that stick on fake wood is UGLY

I just brought a 2012 for 8k hardly any miles on it.
I would have liked to see the odometer to prove that this car has effectively 100K miles on it, which I don't believe.
Because 100K miles in 3 years is roughly 90 miles per day, every single day of those 3 years. Looking at those floor mats and those pedals, I seriously doubt that this car has been driven that much.
My brand new 2016 Elantra, with only 62 miles on it, doesn't look this clean. Especially under the hood.
If I'm proven wrong, that's only good news for me.

Hyundai was sued class action for these cars getting much lower than advertised MPG. Toyota/Honda you get what you pay for. Theyre tried and true proven

Used Honda's and Toyotas are so overpriced even before the pandemic. Good luck finding people to pay $9000-$12000 for a car with 200,000 miles.
what about the engine knock?!!!! your review should include that those models will need engine replacement because of defect making the engine knock!

What is meant by 100k angle review, anywho I have the 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS and I have a little over 28,000 miles on mine, and here we are December of 2018 about to turn over to 2019. I don't drive it much because I have another car I drive more, a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan it has about 83,000 miles. So go figure. Huh.

I had a 2013 Elantra and DETESTED it. I bought it new and only drove it 6 months. I utterly hated it -- so frustrating.
So, yes -- they may last a long time, but if you despise your car what's the point?

No; I had a 2002 Elantra for 11 years, and it might be the best car I ever owned. The new one sucked though -- utterly horrible driving experience.

the suspension on my 2013 gls was trash just felt very unsafe..upgraded to kyb gasajust in the rear and Monroe struts in the front and H&R lowering springs all the way around OMG IT FEELS LIKE A WHOLE DIFFERENT CAR!! it hugs corners like it's supposed to! Dropped 1.5" looks sexy as hell!

that car was probably extremely well maintained, my uncles 2013 elantra has 60k miles and its a complete mess, obviously he gives a shit about his cars, but he had a 2007 civic, and it held way better than the elantra
for a guy as tall as you are, you would not want that car, the ceiling is so low. Its a chix car, its fine
I’m 6’3” and have NO problems with headroom in my ‘13 Elantra. Truly, there’s almost too much legroom in front of me to push down the clutch. Side to side legroom is excellent, too...another reason I steered clear of the Corolla and Civic that year....WAY to confining compared to the Elantra.
