Evolution of Climbing Holds | Euroholds & Adam Ondra

- When I think about climbing in the gym, I believe that climbing holds, and secondarily, the route setters really make a climbing gym. You cannot really make that many variations when it comes to the wall itself. Various steepness, aretes or dihedrals. But that's it. Actually, holds are what is giving you the opportunity to climb up the walls.
The history of climbing holds is fascinating. I have been climbing for almost 25 years, and the climbing holds have changed radically. Watch the following video to find out more about history, evolution, development, see some incredible old-school climbing holds and learn about the presence and possible future of climbing holds.
I am stoked to be part of "shaping the future" with @Euroholds!

So I'm a German watching a Czech speaking Spanish with English subtitles. What a time to be alive
Thought the same💀
Almost 13 minutes of Adam flexing on us that he can speak in Spanish, Czech, and English.
iirc he can also speak Italian and German
@@alexantone5532 You know if he speaks french too?
@@alfonsob2044 I looked and I don’t think he does
But does he speak slovenian?
@@wormball everybody i Czech republic can understand and speak Slovak language.
I had no idea Adam speaks Spanish that well :) But ofc in hindsight it makes total sense hehe
He also speaks Italian
@@Egl3RioNCSGO And German!
I think he speaks 5 languages. Pretty cool.
@@themanissam1 Uh nice :D
@@Phoenixhunter157 Wow, that's awesome and very impressive
I have so many holds on my wall from this company. They are amazing and a great company to deal with!
You have chosen your partners well Adam, I look forward to seeing what you guys create together!
thank you for not forcing this channel's guests to speak in english. love it
Exactly, it's so nice to see them being able to express their enthusiasm without barriers.
You can also watch the first video with Euroholds here czcams.com/video/9auJOTzoJ9I/video.html
I remember using these old school holds and new ones being called plastic fantastics. With much fondness. I think some of the creativity in wall design has been lost over time. Would love a history video about indoor climbing.
It’s always a treat to get some climbing history mixed in with modern methods of climbing!
That's amazing. Climbing holds, like so many things, seem so simple, yet they have such an interesting history and went through much evolution.
¡Qué bonito Xativa! No lo conozco pero habrá que pasarse. Gracias por apollar los negocios locales Adam con este nivel de vídeos. ¡Un abrazo!
I remember some of those holds. The circular inset holds were super popular.
And the "novelty" of climbing on the ceiling was really a thing. Those guys leading all the way across the roof were the SUPERHEROES!
I remember when holds were bricks missing in a wall, or cracks between stone blocks on a railway bridge. Then we had purpose indoor walls with bricks inset or protruding and sometimes a ledge to belay from. Then the gaps had actual rocks cemented in. Often collected from below real crags (E.g Altringham). Then came bendecrete. A world of possibilities including trad protection on indoor walls (eg Preston). Then plywood and resin holds made it less realistic but pushed certain aspects and allowed resetting (not easy with bendecrete). Volumes and now cracks have tried to recreate the change in angles and different techniques of real rock again. I miss bendecrete though.
Last picture holds is from Foixarda tunnel in Barcelona 🔝
I love these videos so much. Lots of good insights from the world's greatest climber.
Hey dude! I love your videos!!!
@@ejl74 Aw thanks man!
Hey dude! I love your videos too!
Finally an Adam video I could understand without using any subtitles. I was very surprised to hear his Spanish.
¡Muchas gracias por el video Adam!
ADAM speaks SPANISH?!?! Damn
And so well ! Amazing
Love this video. I have a huge collection of old climbing holds and I totally appreciate this video.
I felt for Toni's brief panic when Adam tried to take the starfish hold. Those old holds must be very fragile if dropped?
Really cool video, great to get an inside look to how everything evolved with climbing holds !
I see Adam talking about old holds and recognise a ton that are still used in our gym :D Small, weird, mostly crimpy. Good times.
Love this kind of content. Also the collection of images from fans was pretty cool.
So interesting!! Such innovation. Wanna climb, now!!
Increíble Adam! No sabía que hablabas español, qué bueno escucharte hablar en mi idioma. Seguro que te tratan de maravilla en esta tierra.
What a great movie! Neat filming and editing 👌
Great video Adam! Pretty good Spanish too!!
Great! Más vídeos españoles ! 💪💪
Really good history.
This is amazing!
I have euroholds at home. They are amazing holds
¡Qué bien hablas español, Adam! Felicidades, qué bonito descubrir eso en este video.
Qué buen trabajo!
there are such a different shapes of holds! i never seen that. in local gyms we have regular holds, slopes and pyramids. but there are plenty rocks nearby in natural reserve stolby, and so wild place like kuturchin. gym is only for long cold winter.
Lovely video, so interesting
Adam, felizmente sorprendido de que bien hablas español
lets gooo a new video
i love that even after adam will stop climbing, He will leave a mark significant enough so we will all remember who was adam ondra
He'll probably stop competing and some point but I don't think he'll stop climbing.
@@derWein he will retire someday, maybe not soon but he will not be on stage anymore. either way my point is still the same, we will remember him for who he is
Super story!
Love this collaboration so much :D
This is cool 💥
Next step is chossy plastic that might break if you load it wrongly :)
I still havnt been to a gym thats had these new school big type holds really. There might be a couple scattered thru the whole gym, but its mainly just small, old holds. Even volumes are pretty foreign to me.
The green sweater he has on is absolutely badass!
This could have been a really interesting video about the history of climbing holds if you included, well, history. Things like who/which company was the first to actually produce commercial climbing holds and maybe let them talk about their reasoning. The way it is it is mildly interesting and basically just a 13 min ad for Euroholds ...
Not that I have an issue with sponsored content, but I really expect more than a cheap ad wrapped in the pretense of some climbing history. And it wasn't a long time ago when this was exactly what this channel delivered.
Agreed, i was expecting to see some vintage holds for the first climbing gyms/competitions and how they came about, not a Euroholds ad.
Que agradable sorpresa escuchar a Adam hablando castellano
What are your fav hold brands? mine are Blocz, Cheeta and Egrips
Lowkey impressed with Adam's spanish
Great video! What does it mean for a hold to be "sophisticated"? 1:35
awsome video, now i want to work there lmao
Ondra, el rey de los idiomas.
i want to see the holds they made so bad lmao
Ahí bien mi Españita
For some reason I feel like watching Narcos :D
do i have to learn spanish now to still watch and understand your videos? ;)
Hey, you can turn on the captions on youtube setup, ;-)
you wonder if they should not stop making those out of polyurethan. eiter returning to the old ones or creating a more sustainable material. we are creating a massive amount of waste and we dont know what to do with it yet.
Totally agree. Seems crazy how big some comp holds are when such a small portion of the hold is actually used.
Adam, ¡hablas español!
¡Ahora tengo aún más ganas de conocerte!
👌👌
XÀTIVA! ;)
One big point nobody talked, that is relevante (at least in Brazil)... Price?
La Foixarda 12:30
Jamaz he visto presas tan raras o interesantes
good people
Do a colab with the wide boyz! They also design crack holds.
Hello
The guy's name is jesus. I guess he's pretty hold-ly.
Is it weird that I loved the lack of subtitles?
Hey, you can turn on the captions on youtube setup, ;-)
@@Euroholds Oh yes, thanks but I know. I was just excited about an unexpected opportunity to practice my Spanish.
@@smockytubers1188 esa es una gran idea, ;-)
dude speaks three languages i did not know that
Actualy 5.. He speak also german and italian
Why title the video in english if this video isnt even subtitled?
Hey, please turn on the captions on youtube setup, ;-)
euroholds are nasty holds i hate them
First
At 7:00 you can see how you should never work with resin or other chemicals. No proper mask and a fan in the room ? I expect there isn’t any airflow like it should be.
Hi Marcel, in fact here the worker is applying solvent-free pigment. No dangerous at all. All of the processes of our production line follows scrupulously the safety procedures, (audited by the Protection techniques and equipment, risk prevention and health and hygiene in the workplace of the spanish government agency). Also in the 12:45 when pouring, it is totally safe for the people around there, because our PU is solvent free, and the mixing is produced in the head machine. Inmediately after the pouring, the molds are gping through a zone of extraction of vapours due to the PU reaction, even not being especially dangerous. Thank you for your interest in this aspects, we are really concerned about this issues, and spasnish industry also does..
Am I the only who doesn't like these new huge slopy holds ? They don't look natural at all
This is cool but subtitles would have been awesome
There are subtitles. Click on the "CC" button and there are english subtitles.
So what was the point of even starting this video in English.
If you want to gain more fans don't celebrate like a lunatic after accomplishing climbs. There is one where you start screaming and acting very bizarre, that is enough to turn someone off for life. Good luck in your future. Try to act more mature in the future. It looks better on you.
You talking to the best climber in the world, you punk. Little bit of respect
