I have pioneer DDJ-400 and it's been a blast to play with! Tried with regular xbox controller before -- not as fun as with the real spin wheel. If you have a controller laying around, get the game, it's so fucking fun! Love that you added train mode -- super helpful for harder difficulties
Update, the DJ Hero controller works (the ones that are recognised on PC, I think the PS2/3 versions), it's not ideal as the wheel is super heavy and a bit wobbly when spinning wildly as our game demands.
We have crazy ideas for a controller but with just 3 developers and limited budget it's probably just a pipe dream for our first rhythm game release. Part of the reason rhythm games fell out of favour with the masses (in our opinion) was the excessive number of peripherals required for purchase by players. We've always thought the solution for this was to make the game work with as many existing midi devices as possible via an in-game calibration tool. There will always be alternate controls available (touch screen, motion, KBAM) and we aim to make the experience as consistent as possible across all control schemes.
One more point is that if the controller doesn't accept wheel tap inputs it probably won't be suitable for Spin Rhythm. I'm not sure if the IIDX wheel does (we've looked at spec sheets and can't figure it out - maybe you can shed some light?) - the DJ hero doesn't either I don't think, it does have physical buttons on the wheel but it would probably be awkward to play if the wheel itself doesn't act as a button since that's the way Spin is designed.
Super Entertainment ah, yeah I do think that needing huge controllers for rhythm games keeps them niche but its something that makes the genre my favorite ahah. That is a good question though, I've never built one myself and have tested to see exactly how the turntable works. But I'll take mine apart and see if I can get an idea. At worst, I'll just make a custom controller when your game drops like I did for Project Diva. Thanks for the reply!

You'll notice a very subtle colour change on the track, the lines "beam" out from the wheel up into the track, which lets you see where the wheel is if you're looking a little higher than the target zone. Once you play for a bit you can kind of feel where you are anyway, especially with touch controls.
Super Entertainment I can’t see that in the video, but considering this is the only gameplay I’ve seen thus far of the game and I have obviously never played it I am going to just take you word on it for now! I really would love to take this for a spin (pun intended).
You can see it around the 22 second mark where there's a spin followed by a pink note. He lands on a blue note but with the beam shooting out pink beforehand it changes from blue to pink instantly. I recommend watching at .25 speed to get a good look at it!
Spin accepts input from midi devices, so if the turntable outputs via a midi axis it should work but be careful this game really demands a lot of spin and tap, vinyl deck wheels are typically heavier and more delicate than a Pioneer so it may not be ideal
Game is incredible . Feels more natural to play with a jog wheel. Have you guys thought about making a midi controller specific to this game. Or is that beyond the scope?

What kind of controller support will this have? I have an iidx controller and this looks like it'd work perfectly with it. I noticed you're using an actual spindeck so I'm guessing anything that spins will work?
We don't actually have one to try yet. The main things a controller has to do is support an actual tap on the wheel itself, as well as wheel motion left and right. Not sure if iidx ones do, or just detect general "motion" but we'd love to try.
@@SpinRhythmXD yeah iidx just uses a rotary or optical encoder to see if the turntable is moving. The only existing rhythm game afaik that has a switch to detect taps and spinning is museca.

I'm skeptical because of the need to read so close to the target zone, but am very intrigued at the same time.

Once you play for a bit you can kind of feel where you are anyway, especially with touch controls.

For sure, on mobile touch controls feel amazing, mouse feels really fluid too, and there are other input methods that play great.
