    For the wrist down technique, you can increase the height of your wrist (without increasing keyboard height) by putting something below them, may it be armrest or just some towels. The idea is that your wrist and hand will become flatter, reducing strain

    This is i've been searching for, you noticed that after while of playing casually, you start to get decent and feel like you are getting into something, however when you watch other players you feel like something is missing, and is directly all these actual technical knowledge that divides a casual from an actual good player, this is what breaks the barrier and starts to develop your skill to an amateur in a way to pro, never seen a guide this good and this crucial, great job

    As an old player, this is groundbreaking. I never had anyone to share this passion with, I could never talk strategy or technique. This is invaluable, and teaches me a ton of lingo. I did everything wrong.
    Wrist down, using arrow keys, all crunched together.
    I never knew what chordjacks were called, I just knew I really sucked at reading them. Maybe now I could be a semi decent "well rounded" player. I was fairly decent but I had major holes in technique. Can't wait to tackle it again.

    • @Cobalt985
      @Cobalt985 Před 3 lety +3

      There are lots of "budget" options out there, I recommend looking at Redragon's offerings. Only the mechanical ones though. The K552 is awesome. Try to find the red switch ones, but if you can't then it's not the biggest deal ever.
      For people reading this with a higher budget, I highly recommend the GK61. Typing this on a modded GK61 right now. For Stepmania I'd go with linears like optical black, yellow, or red. I like lighter switches so I went with optical reds and I haven't regretted it.
      If you REALLY want tactility (i.e. you want to feel something close to when the switch actuates) you COULD go for the Optical Brown ones. I don't recommend clicky switches although they'll work too if they're your preference.

    to make wrist up probably more comfortable, try having the keyboard in a lower position so that your elbows are about a 90 degree and you don't have to bow out your shoulders a bit.
    in my case, my desk is too high and my chair doesn't go up that much so I'd have to use more muscles to maintain the position. not ideal.
    one thing you can also do to practice, is trying to type correctly with a wrist up position. it's technically the better way to type though harder to get used to.

    I like many genres and I have found many easy and medium songs of many genres for this. I actually like playing with a keyboard and you could even get good lag removal for non game controllers even. I recommend that you try using your keyboard more on you lap in you can, I did it and my arm felt more relaxed overall which makes sense. There is many funny songs even to be downloaded even. There is many genres now for download. I actually like Guitar hero, but this is pretty addictive for me still and you could play it with computer keys or dancing, but I prefer computer keys. I am so glad this game doesn't use flash since that flash flash hero went down. I also like how you can change many settings plus that this has been around for so long which is why it has so many songs. Heck, there is even competitions for this game where people used computer keys. I don't mind that FCs are super hard to get in this game too since I am not competitive.

    What does a slight grip of the game mean? What makes someone not a beginner?

    • @Bullerephon
      @Bullerephon Před 5 lety +2

      Being able to actually play without getting lost I would think. True beginners would have to constantly look at the keyboard, and have no muscle memory for the game, making it that much more difficult to play. Someone with a grip on the game has the basic muscle memory down for at least some patterns, and I would say can play up to step 6 songs without much difficulty.

    Been trying to learn JS for a month or two now, and funnily enough I'm finding the hardest thing is learning the patterns. I still find myself hitting good/bad on the same patterns over and over again, despite downrating to 0.5x.... any ideas?

    • @taggerung_
      @taggerung_ Před 3 lety +6

      If youre struggling to learn the patterns youre either playing the same files over and over again and developing mindblock or youre playing stuff way out of your comfort zone. If youre downrating to 0.5x and still cant 96 a file you need to find an easier file and downrate that instead

    This might not be the best place to ask this but is there a guide for the terminology? It’s hard for a beginner like me to follow what words like jump stream, chord jack, etc. mean.

    • @taggerung_
      @taggerung_ Před 3 lety +1

      Jump - two notes simultaneously
      Stream - any stream of notes, like a 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 pattern, or anything more complex. Can be dense or light depending on patterning
      Hand - three notes simultaneously
      Chords - 2 to 4 notes at the same time
      Jacks - notes repeating in the same column, creating to a jackhammer-like motion. Can be longjacks (many notes repeated, more than 4), or minijacks (2-3 notes repeated in a single column)
      Chordjack - chords that repeat and require jackhammers in multiple columns, usually require you to raise and lower certain fingers to hit alternating chord patterns. Can be dense or light
      And many more you will discover and come to understand through experience. Some other ones i dont feel like explaining that you can ask in the etterna discord include jumpstream, handstream, quadstream, dumps, one hand trills, jumptrills, runningmen, anchors, and a bunch of long note patterns that youll probably never see in etterna (such as inverses and shields)

    Hey bud, any advice for players with RSIs? I'm not very good as most recently I got a 90% on Icy's Jersey Spirit but then my hands feel wrecked for a couple days. Any tips?

    • @EtienneYT
      @EtienneYT  Před 5 lety +5

      The best advice I can give you is to get it checked out by someone who can give you a proper estimate of when your hands will be cleared up of any RSI-like symptoms. I'm not qualified to tell you whether or not you should keep playing through it but I definitely think it's important you make sure your hands are in good shape before you try to play a game like this.

    • @EtienneYT
      @EtienneYT  Před 5 lety +2

      I've gotten this question before and my go-to answer is to usually pick a hand position, as both wrist up and wrist down require different muscles to use. Muscle imbalance could be possible as a result but I'm not exactly qualified to confirm the physiological after effects of using one hand for each hand positions.
      I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!
