- My Wisteria has been planted for 5 years and I have enough video footage to show you how to prune it. Wisteria respond to pruning in March, mid summer and in late October. These 3 pruning are to prevent excessive growth and to prevent the plant from wrapping, twisting and becoming a tangled mess. In the video you can see a branched structure leading to flowering clusters.
Have a look at this video also on Wisteria cultivation

I appreciate your generous sharing of what you have learned!
Looks lovely, Ian.
It’s was planted a few years ago and after some ruthless pruning it’s now flowering beautifully.
I have battled wisteria for five years now. Acres and acres. Vicious vine is left unattended but the trees can breath now and it’s new vines coming up and I’m going to create a fenceline of Wisteria.
I appear to be in receipt of a stump of that black dragon purple one in the opening shot. infront of the kitchen window, tries to strangle the house and yet seems to follow like an algorithm, peculiar.
15 years on and countless videos… Still no solution for my non-flowering wisteria. This year I will try the hard root prune. Thanks for the video.
If your plant was grown from seed it will exhibit ‘seedling variability’ and will likely require many years of growth to grow small insignificant flowers. It’s not worth the wait. To be sure, buy your wisteria in flower with a named variety
Too much nitrogen in the soil maybe?
it likes salmon.
I have a question: 1)how would I prune back a hugely overgrown and out of control wisteria? It’s growing over a big arbor. There are twisted branches (more like tree trunks). 2)Do you have tips on how to prevent shoots growing back from thick branch/trunk vines I’ve cut off? A spray or paint? Constant trimming? I love the branch system you created. Thank you! 💜
Look for my How to tame a wisteria video
Minds has just flower for the first time looks beautiful and smell lovely.
What color do you have? Did you buy it in flower?
Thanks
I’ve never had it explained this way!!! thank you I’ll get to pruning asap😂
Thank you
Thank you so much for this information! Do you have information on training wisteria into tree form? Thank you so much in advance❤
The thing is to grow in a pot and put a bamboo pole and let it grow up the pole and make a canopy at the top of it....I've made 3 of them so far.
I have a wisteria that I always wanted grow against the side of my barn, but never had the nerve to do it. What do people do when they have to paint the house...cut it down to the ground?
This is a beautiful flower. Not a Chinese but a Japanese one, I suppose. What is the name of it? I would like to plant it at my own house.
I planted new wisteria this spring and its now the end of July. I am trying to train the vines but when I barely move them. The ends die about 6 inches back. Why?
Very pretty variety … I don’t find it easily in Tx.
I’m in East Texas and I got the 50 year family reunion where everyone came and forgot to leave. Vines that are the size of huge boa snakes.
I think this is japanese type. Called black Dragan. I have one but never have any blooms yet. Your flower just look like the label picture
Dose it grow faster than russian vine/silver lace vine?
Ye india ke climate me groom hoga kya
Sir, the doubl petals of the flower is gorse, I love to have some seed from India
hello
nice video
much appreciated
what did you mean by
bye it in flour ?
You should buy the plant with open flowers to be sure of the flower color
I planted about 20 wisteria. See the last couple of months off either rotted it out or are still sitting in the carts doing nothing I have ordered dozens of seeds throughout my experience and wisteria seeds are my Kryptonite
Wisteria seeds are a great idea but in reality will only disappoint. Seedling Wisteria are highly variable and may take many years to flower and when they do it could be a big let down. Choose a growing Wisteria in flower (to be sure of color) and give it sun and water and stand back
I have planted 4 wisteria, beside the large 12” square cedar posts, to grow up and cover the pergola leading to the front door of my ranch home. I have listened to both videos on how to prune. What I most need to know is what to provide for the wisteria to grow up on. I don’t want them to wrap around the large rough sawn cedar posts, as they periodically have to be replaced. Will loosely tying the vertical shoots to a string tied at the top an attached at the bottom work. What kind of string, twine, rope, fishing line is best?
Use garden twine that will degrade. Loosely guide the growth where you want it. I frequently tie a shoot in place and a few months later relocate that tie as required.
I have an old farmhouse style home with wood shingles. Any tips on what to use on the house to train the wisteria , ie , hooks, staple gun, easiest way pleeeeze as I am very new to this .. thx so much !
Wisteria is a vigorous vine and it will grow behind the shingles. I used screws on my wood shingles and then tied the growth to the screws . You need to check throughout the growing season and remove the intruding growth
@@PlantedwithIanCooke THANK YOU SO MUCH for responding!! I will update you after I plant it 😀
Going to get a wisteria for my mom in denver, where should I get a small 2-3 ft tree?
Buy it in flower, 2 to 3 foot high. Your cold season might mean you can get stock in May. Buy the plant actively growing to see live shoots. Alameda my have some
What is the name of your wisteria? Is it hardy to usda zone 5?
It was purchased as Wisteria ‘Black Dragon’ but it does not resemble the black dragon I am familiar with. Anyone buying a wisteria is advised to buy it in flower to be sure of the color. Baby it in the first year; plant in spring in full sun and do not let dry out. Tough and able to thrive in zone 5
Is the wisteria you feature in this video an Asian or American variety?
Asian, however there are instances of plants being misnamed particularly with Wisteria.
Does this sort wisteria in the video is appropriate food for honey harvest bees?
I see bees on the flower clusters, but I don’t know more specifics than that
@@PlantedwithIanCooke Thank you!
Hello ! Thx for your wisteria videos . This will be my first time planting my Wisteria sinensis. My husband is sooooo dead set against it of course 😖because I want to plant near my house and it’s wood siding 🫣… anyway, I have done my research about the pruning 3 times yearly, my question is for training the vine what is best and easiest to attach to wood on house and how to prune to get it to flower ( hasn’t flowered yet) , what soil is best as well as mulch ? Any advice well appreciated!
Do not plant straight Wisteria sinensis, this invasive, chokes trees and produces viable seed that continue the cycle. You must buy it in flower to be sure of the color. It must be a named cultivar as this ensure you get the spectacular flowers. The videos explain how to prune.
Do you not understand why people hate wisteria there’s so many people that say don’t grow it don’t grow it it’ll take over words invasive, blah, blah blah I love wisteria if I could grow it everywhere I would but I can’t. I have an HOA and I have neighbors really close so I can’t grow it in my yard without inviting someone else’s but I love it.
It has its place but it is not for everyone or every situation. Don’t lament what you can grow; embrace what you can grow.
🙂
Curious about ur accent it sounds a mix of American and English but suddenly sometimes Australian comes through as well
I left England in 2000 and live in Connecticut USA
