- Wisteria (W. sinensis and W. floribunda) is an iconic garden vine. Many a Victorian front porch or brick garden wall are swathed in its large fragrant drapey blossoms each spring.
But Wisteria is a BEAST of a plant, and it takes careful strategy and maintenance to keep this long-lived beauty in your garden without it becoming a nuisance. Let me walk you through what you should know before you put in a wisteria vine, and how we care for and prune ours.

I lived in an old tall narrow Victorian house in the Alphabet district back in the 80s. It had a Wisteria that had grown up the north side and over the roof. I loved it, but it was the possum super highway.
I just purchased my first wisteria. And I was searching for how to take care of it. After reading how evasive it is, Iwas about to return it!

My grandma had one in her yard..from Macon, Georgia- middle ga...and around spring time/ pollen season the bees loved the tree, lastly idk why it had a bad smell

If it’s got flowers on it at purchase you’re good. I got lucky mine was the strongest but not flowering most of the others had flowers so I figured it was from the same plant. My first year and flowers have appeared already.

I moved to a 3acre property in the country a year ago and woke up a couple days ago to tons of purple flowers everywhere. Didn't even know what it was. I saw only a small handful of them off in the distance last year. Googled "purple flowers" then came to CZcams for some more info.
Thankfully it's far away from the house but I can tell it's smothering other plants/trees. What a chore this is gonna be. It's def taking over!! Very pretty to see but def taking over.🙂 Thank you for this informative video. I truly had no idea what this plant was. I'm glad I looked it up because I would have just left it alone - by next year it would have been the only thing left on my property! lol!
You can find them in a tree form now, which makes their size manageable, it only grows to around 10 feet high & long.

I am new getting into permaculture and have gone a bit nuts purchasing as many plants as I can.
No I have come to realise that all plants so in permaculture shops literally grow like weeds.
I have even seen binding weed selling, Convolvulus arvensis.
NOBODY warns us that we might cause a problem for our neighbours or that we might not be able to remove a plant.
(I have just removed a wormwood).
I am now researching every plant because there are no warnings when purchasing

My parents planted Wisteria next to an adjacent house and in a few years’ time they were getting rid of it because it started lifting the neighbours’ roof!!! It is certainly a monster. Funny - throughout watching the video I kept on alternating between really wanting to get one and then thinking it is not really worth it 😀
Don't plant them, because they're super invasive, growing up utility poles and wires, causing lots of outages.
Plus, they root as the vines travel along the ground, wrap themselves around trees, and strangle them to death, causing them to topple on the ground, or killing large branches, which are likely to fall on your house.
@Humble Pie Keeping them from laying on the ground and cutting off the seedpods is extremely important to keep them from spreading, especially if you live near the woods.
It's so bad where I live that a wildfire is the best way to get rid of it.
@Humble Pie That stuff is super invasive and deadly to native trees. Even oaks aren't a match if it gets wrapped up in it.

I'm in my first winter in the first house I've owned (!) in NZ and have inherited wisteria (I'm 99% sure - haven't yet seen it flower). Planted on a trellis next to the garden and shed and carport - and it's all through the roof of the garage too! Do you know of any videos that demo the winter pruning? Moved into the old home place of which Wysteria had long been running ramped, ruined a very nice fence we had to remove. However, we were more concerned with it getting into our septic line, which would be a bigger nightmare for us.

There was a house near me that had Wisteria in front of the house by the street on a white picket fence with a trellis that had a walk way leading up to the front door. It was gorgeous!
I dug a purple one up from a wooded area that had no home on it for many, many years. Actually, I just pulled up a rooted piece off the bottom area. Planted it on an arbor very near to our house and it grew lovely flowers for many years BUT I knew nothing about growing them and just let it go. I grew under the aluminum siding, through the attic, and out the other side of the house. When we moved the new owner cut it down - smart people. I then dug another piece off that same old abandoned lot, this time getting a white one and did something very different. We had a chain length fence put in at our new home and I asked them to sink a 10 foot pole into the ground out in the middle of our acre lot - away from any structure. I asked them to attach wires in the top by drilling holes and letting them hang down like an umbrella. They did and I put the white wisteria at the base. Then I proceeded to forget about it. It grew very well by itself and up to the top then all along the wires looking ever so much like a beautiful white umbrella. Then came the downside, it grew more and more vines from the bottom and now it is a huge oval over ten feet tall and wide. The only one that enjoys it is the cat playing hide and seek. It doesn't flower anymore and I wasn't sure what to do as I loved it as a major focal point before when it was blossoming and didn't have the heart to cut it down. NOW, I see your video and think I could rehabilitate it back to a beautiful focal point. Thank you so much for all this great information, very thorough and interesting.

I have a lot Wisterias and I train mine as trees up bird feeding poles and metal rods in containers and for me they are easy to handle.
Really helpful video. Just bought a house with a big very established one along a shared fence but hasn't been checked/pruned ever I don't think, can't wait to feed it magnesium and phosphorus and prune it back so we can train it against the entire fence. But after your valuable advice I'll make sure the fence structure is strong enough and I keep it regularly in check. Thank you.
My current home came with three Kentucky Wisteria, Wisteria macrostachya (Blue Moon x Aunt Dee). One was tiny and died. Another one stayed relatively small since it was competing with English ivy. The third is huge and lives on the fence between our and the neighbor's driveway. We need to move the Wisteria. The smaller one seems like we could dig it up and move it without killing it. Not sure about the big one.

Theres a wisteria behind my backyard fence that grew randomly im sure one of the birds gifted it to me for feeding them lol but i gladly accepted it n i really like letting it go wild but im glad to know i can give it a heavy pruning n it will come right back. I also saved seeds but now im glad to learn cuttings is a much better way to go. I saved your video for future reference btw 😁👍🏻👍🏻
I'm in Southeastern Ohio and this Video was VERY helpful. I planted a small Wisteria about 11 years ago. I believe its a Kentucky Wisteria. At first , when it was around 8 years old , it actually had several flowers on it . I knew nothing of proper pruning, just did the best I could and was constantly removing the long vine that showed up at the base of the Tree. I have had some health issues and can no longer get up on a ladder to prune it on top. This year , only one sad but long blue blossom. Its in front of my house and it is on a wood Arbor. Its taken me so long to nurture it from a baby, that I will not get rid of it or move it. My adult Son cut it back one time and I honestly thought he killed it. But the next year...it was back with more flowers. But it is somewhat invasive if you don't keep at it. Just thought I'd share . Thank you for all the tips!
The flowers are actually edible, and safe in moderate quantities. (Also, delicious). Same as Black Locust. Look it up.
I planted a trio triangle of Wisteria trees two yrs ago. The tallest of the three was a 7" twig when I planted it. Today I pruned it (so much fun) and did some more training and it's taller than I am and I'm 5' 3". My front yard was completely bare. And now I have a beautiful tree right in the middle😊. It hasn't bloomed yet but I'm hoping next yr😊

Well I just planted a wisteria in front of our house (not on the house, but pretty close with a trellis behind it). It's grown quite a bit in just a month's time. I miiiiiight think about moving it before it starts prying up the siding now...
Amethyst Falls wisteria is sold as a FAR less aggressive version of wisteria. It is a frutescens type. WELL. Not only does that one smell like cat pee but it TOO seems impossible to kill.
For some years it was growing at a fence corner, looking like a small tree. Then one spring most of the top growth was dead and it looked awful, so I cut it down. Needless to say I got copious new shoots, which I sprayed to kill. I have sprayed them now for more than 4 years straight and they are STILL coming up copiously.. And NOT just where the trunk was but spread out from it infiltrating other plants making those shoots impossible to spray.
This was just ONE smallish plant. BEWARE and do not believe any positive hype and do NOT plant wisteria ever.

I have several all in a pot and trained up a pole in tree form and maintained, it is a problem if you don't keep it in check.

Wow I have 4 of them and in zone 6b mine are slow to grow even though they are in full sun I'm growing them in tree form and I love them still waiting for them to bloom....
If you want to get rid of wisteria, try drilling several holes into the bigger stems, trunk or roots, pointing up so it can hold a liquid. And then put some Roundup or other type of plantkiller into the holes to have it soak it up. This worked with a cut down hackberry tree who's roots kept trying to grow new trees.

As soon as I saw the base of your wisteria, 9:36 I realised I have to talk to you. We have cut it to bare bone as yours small, and this is first spring when our wisteria has first shoots out. I live in Michigan and it gets cold here. I have a baby wisteria That I have in a small pot and I dont plan to live in this house much longer. My question for you is can I keep a wisteria in a pot indoors by a window during winter until I get my own house ?

I live in a townhome with a small garden space and I was wondering if I could use a purple robe locust or another locust tree as a support structure for espalier fruit trees if I pollarding them. I would really appreciate your input. And if the locust would not work for that application, do you have any recommendations that would? I love your channel and appreciate all you share. Thank you!
I think in a small area, it’s going to get overwhelming pretty quickly. They can have large root systems and get quite tall. What about a redbud? A bit smaller, less assertive, still has pretty flowers?

A previous owner planted wisteria. It's killed one tree, maimed 8 more, & I've been fighting it for three years now.
The flowers are pretty but sparse, and there're roots thru over half our yard sending up shoots; it's grown into four of the neighbor's yards too.

We had an archway where we grew Virginia creepers it was weekly trimming and ties a lot of maintaining but beautiful when controlled
I'm at new home growing wisteria blue moon in pots on my deck now I think I'll put it out in the yard to grow along a trellis we have a very long space for them to for telling me they are toxic my pets so chew on plants in the garden tyty

I’m not sure what the yellow spots are but when trees are babies, I water them with a 5 gallon bucket once a week and mulch deeply to prevent water loss.
I so badly want a wisteria tree in my backyard and put a table and chairs under its shade to just chill during the summer or maybe a hammock i guess a weeping willow would be better for lounging under but wisteria is so pretty even though its poisonous
I made a mistake and germinated 6 wisteria seeds out of excitement.. To my surprise, all have successfully sprouted, but now I am panicking as I do not know where to plant them all!
Try keeping it in a pot and train as a bonsai. I've had mine for over 10 years. Let it grow till July, then prune back.

Great video and beautiful plant! I have a couple questions (as a newbie): Can it be grown indoors? I live in the dorms on an air force base in Arizona and can't take it outside but i do have it on my window (its growing beautifully so far & i absolutely adore this little baby) giving it as much sunlight as possible, What would be a suitable pot size for it? I have it in a wide glass candle container. Also what nutrients should i add (if any) to the soil, i already have it in 1 part original soil and 3 parts worm castings (im trying to keep it natural). Last question is, when the sun goes down and i have my ceiling lights in my room does it not like the additional light? Like, will i be stunting the plant? & also should i consider an artificial light to supplement it's light intake? & if so what spectrum would you recommend ? Thanks in advance, 1st time watching your channel & i give you 10/10! :D
I think if you tried to grow indoors, it would be a monster that took over your house very quickly.
@@ParkrosePermaculture So far so good, i just need more light for it but she is definitely happy, though. Any nutrient supplements you would recommend or is my 1:3 ratio sufficient. I want her to be as happy as possible. I also found out i have the Japanese variant.

That’s a good question! I think if you chopped and dropped it somewhere where it baked in the sun pretty good, you could use it as chop n drop.

I didn’t see any pods on your wisteria. The variety I have produces many pods and is would like to remove as many as possible when I prune, to reduce the toxicity risk for my puppy. Will that damage the plant?
It does produce pods but I tend to prune it back before it gets to that stage. Once the flowers are spent I cut it back. I would definitely remove any pots because they are toxic. It’s almost impossible to damage wisteria.
Will I die before it becomes a problem?
We have a young wisteria that is growing in a shade. I want to transplant it so it can get more sun. Can I do that without killing it
It’s very difficult to kill wisteria. They do transplant well

I cannot get anywhere near my wisteria, when it in bloom, the bumblebees swarm the plant.
So if you keep up with the pruning can it be ok? I feel like no one ever really answers that question, people just keep saying “it can take over! It can take over!” I guess I want to know what the roots do? I plan to keep up with the pruning and train it into a tree form, also not right next to the house, but I want to know if I should be worried about the roots doing any damage? How far from my house should I keep it?
My son has a ten-year-old plant and he put it on the front corner of his house. He has aluminum siding. He then trained it over an arch and cute fencing down the sidewalk. I started working on his property three years ago as they had no other plants and planted numerous perennials and made beautiful gardens everywhere. I have been trimming the wisteria back all the time. I didn't even know to only trim in late summer and after winter. After watching this video I am going to get on a ladder and make sure it has not got under the roof or siding. It has beautiful purple flowers in the spring. I am going to graft some and put them over along a fence too. My son seems to love them and has no issue with their invasiveness.

I would not say it can grow a foot a day its not a hop but it can easliy grow multiple inches a day i would say hop is more of a hog than wisteria
Geeezzzzz - the stress level about trimming this wisteria was evident. I get it - you don't like the plant!!!! OR Perhaps it was just the fact that having to come over, from her OWN garden, to help her father, who actually planted this invasive run amok toddler of a plant, that was so exasperating for her.
