How to grow Wisteria from seed

  • In this video I'm showing you how to grow Wisteria from seed and discuss all the steps I took from seed to 3 week old Wisteria seedlings. So if you were wondering how to germinate Wisteria seeds this video illustrates the process.
    I got several Wisteria seed pods from a Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) which I want to germinate and eventually grow into a Wisteria Bonsai. The approach of growing Wisteria Bonsai from seed is certainly not the fastest way to do it but the fact that the Wisteria plant is a vigorous grower should speed up the process.
    Germinating Wisteria seeds is easy and, as you will see in the video, the germination rate is very high. No wonder this species is an invasive one. You just have to hydrate the seeds by keeping them in water for a few days and then keep them in a humid environment. Once the seeds have germinated you can plant them in containers or directly in your garden while making sure the soil they're planted in does not dry out. When planting directly in the ground you should make sure you select the right place to grow wisteria plants since they are vigorous climbers and may get out of control if not constantly maintained.

    I saw this video some months ago, I finally bought the seeds some days ago and I'm glad to comment that this method is amazing, all of my seeds germinated and I'm now waiting for them to fully sprout in the little containers I put them into, so thanks for inspiring me to give this plants an opportunity to grow and spreading this great method around

      Hi! I received some wisteria seeds and I put them in a glass jar for 3 days then I removed the access of water and now waiting for them to sprout is that the way you did it?
      Also I did another method that I found on CZcams I took 10 seeds put them in a jars for 3 days then I removed the outer brown shell and I see it sprouting and place them in a plastic container with paper towel on the bottom and placed the bottom and on top of the seeds and poured water so the paper towel is soaked.
      When you put your seeds in water did you put the seeds in direct sunlight? I’m new to this and I would appreciate your feedback?
      Thank you

    Thank you so much for your presentation. I bought the seeds online and tried for a couple of years but couldn't succeed. On the other hand, seeds seeds collected from my existing garden, sprouts with out any effort, just placed in a designated location, and within a month, almost all the seeds germinated. I have more than 30 new plants in different ages and am planning to make bonsai. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction to see the results from seeds to a complete flowering bonsai!

      The problem with seeds purchased online is that in most cases they are too old and have lost their germination capability. The seeds I'm using are fresh seeds collected by me.

      if you plant it using a seed. you will wait for 15 or 30 years to bloom it's first flower...

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  Před 2 lety +4

      It's true that if you just plant the seed and sit back expecting it to flower without providing it with the proper care it could take this long. If it is planted in the ground in good soil, in a favorable location and you prune it correctly every year to promote blooming it will bloom much faster. Hope this helps!
      There are a lot of articles on the internet which just tell you that Wisteria grown from seed will take up to 15-30 years to bloom but don't tell you more than that. And this is because many of them are written by authors without first hand experience with growing Wisteria so they just put together bits of information from multiple sources.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  Před rokem +2

      Too much moisture and too little fresh air usually encourages mold. In my case, letting the jar "breathe" every day or so helped in keeping mold away. If germinating in a jar like I did in the video did not work for you, you could try using the wet tissue approach. If that doesn't work either then I suspect the wisteria seeds could be too old and have lost their ability to germinate .

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  Před 2 lety +3

      When it comes to Wisteria I only have experience based on the full size one that I'm growing in my garden. But judging from its growth pattern I will probably let the seedlings grow undisturbed (no pruning) for one or two years until they gain some vigor as they seem to start off as slow growers. Once the plant gains some vigor it grows like crazy and it will need constant pruning through the growing season to keep it in shape.
      So in short: I will let them grow freely until next summer. Around the end of the summer next year I will probably cut them back hard to start the development of the trunk. And we'll see what comes next...
      When the plant is still in its skinny seedling state you usually want to let it thicken up before starting the actual shaping process with pruning and wiring.
      Hope this helps!
      Cheers,
      Stefan

      Hola y gracias!
      Lamento escuchar los problemas que tuvo con la germinación de glicinas hasta ahora. Lo más probable es que las semillas no fueran viables ya que la glicina es muy fácil de germinar.
      Recogí mis semillas de una glicina que crece en un parque, así que eso es lo primero que recomendaría. Vea si puede identificar glicinas en un parque público o que crecen en cercas e intente recolectar las semillas a fines del invierno o principios de la primavera antes de que se abran las vainas.
      Si esto no es posible, ordenar en línea es la única opción, pero no puedo recomendar una buena fuente en línea de semillas de Wisteria. Tuve una buena experiencia ordenando otros tipos de semillas en www.rarepalmseeds.com y www.rarexoticseeds.com para que pudiera probar una de estas o buscar otros vendedores con muy buenos comentarios de los clientes con respecto a la tasa de germinación de semillas.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  Před rokem +2

      I think it's something that can be done. The only potential problem would be if the different wisteria varieties have different growing vigor. In this case you may have a tree with a side that is growing much faster than the other sides which wouldn't look too good in my opinion. It's certainly a great idea and it should be worth testing it.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  Před 2 lety +1

      To be honest I never thought about the PH requirements of wisteria since it's the kind of plant that will thrive almost everywhere once it's well established. However, I looked it up and apparently it prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil but as I said it will adapt in most soil types.
      If you're transplanting to it's final location in the garden place it in a sunny location. If it comes from a nursery you could plant it anytime but I would do it in spring. If you're just transplanting from one container to another I would keep it out of direct sun for a couple of weeks and try to provide same temperature as it was getting before transplanting. Hope this helps.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you, I am glad you found the video useful. If the seeds are viable they should germinate in a couple of weeks but as you saw from the video some are faster and some are slower. Older seeds will germinate slower as they are more dehydrated. The germination rate will also decrease if the seeds are older and the number of seeds that will not germinate will be higher in older seeds. You should check on the seeds at least once a week and let some fresh air in the jar to avoid rot and mold. The temperature is also a factor but if you keep them at a temperature above 15-18 degrees Celsius they should start to germinate.
      I hope this helps and that you get a good germination rate from your Wisteria seeds. Let me know how it turns out.
