- It's time for us to discuss the Psychedelic P*rn Crumpets today! This is another Australian band that quite a few of you have mentioned over the year. Let's have a listen and can someone please explain what's going on down there in Australia and what is psychedelic rock?!

Loving the pronunciation of Tame Impala at the beginning!
It's a weird one
Never thought I'd see the day a lowkey underground band I listen too getting covered by you you're amzing JH! As a musician myself from New Zealand I've been following Psychedelic Porn Crumpets for years (since highschool). If you or anyone care to venture further into the rabbit hole of their psychedelic madness their tunes 'Cornflake' & 'Gurzle'' are very riff/rock forward the latter has a beautiful sax solo & First Light in the Garden at Chipping' verymuch mellow what you'd consider "Psychedelic" almost like Planet Caravan or Zietgest by Black Sabbath. Keep doing you man you're knowledge, charisma & talent are an Inspiration!
I genuinely love the commitment to the frequent uploads even the the channel has grown so much, so quickly.
JH, you are the G.O.A.T 😆
🐐🤘
Another awesome Australian band you should check out is Pond - highly recommend!
Yes, I used to watch Pond in the early days before Tame Impala blew up, I remember them playing in the Norfolk Basement in Fremantle to a load of long haired hippies on acid while they sung about psychedelic mangos.
All this talk about Psychedelic Rock and Robots reminds me of The Flaming Lips. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots was an excellent example of Psych-Rock. Maybe you could react to them at some point? 🥰
Merci beaucoup, Monsieur! I really do appreciate being exposed to music that I may not have heard of & I love hearing your thoughts about it. I admit to checking every morning to see your latest offering.
It's very un-Australian to bite the hand that feeds. KG&TLW should have been grateful for your generous plug! Justin we do appreciate you here in the land down under ♥️
Yeah I don’t think or Universal (records claim EVERYTHING like in 30 seconds) or bands on smaller labels (who hardly claim for clips and reviews) understand that exposing their music to new people at no cost to them is like free marketing? More ears listening brings money in eventually. And why Tic Toc can play basically anything?
it is beyond unlikely any members of the band are to blame for the claim. it’s probably somebody in the label which makes sense, they love making money off of others work
Recommendations are how I found a lot of music. To cut that off makes me less of a consumer. Labels can be so backwards.
Australia represent 🤘 sick band
Couldn’t agree more 😏🤘🏻
This song is probably one of their more straight ahead hard rock songs. They've definitely got plenty that take things to different places with, some time changes and somewhat abrupt vibe changes. 'Found God in a tomato' would definitely be a song to check the boxes that you were looking for. They've been my most listened to band for the Last 3 years. Glad to see you giving them the time of day.
Agreed this is probably about as "pop" as they get. Great band with some really awesome music to delve into.
Yes! Or Van Gogh & Gone
WoW! I've not heard of these guys before.....it's good to hear younger artists still making noisey guitar music. I can hear Supergrass and Arctic Monkeys as well. I love all the reverb on the vocals that adds that psych vibe to it....and I like the guitar sounds....it sounds more garagey to me....they also remind me of older bands in Australia like The Scientists, even Tumbleweed....fun!
Check out the Mars Volta 🤙
(and boy is it rare to find quality younger rock bands in 2023) lol
“Lil’ Conformist”
If you liked these vocals, check out Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats... They have harmonizing falsetto vocals and are awesome psychdoom
It good there's still a modern psych scene going on. Really like some of the stuff coming out of the Goner record label and everything that Ty Segall has done
"Justin Hawkins NAILS the song, ah'gain."
Incredible how easily he can decipher songs.
Good day to you 😍😍
Hi Justin! Greetings from Brazil! I´ve been a fan since the first time I saw The Darkness on MTV, and following your channel for a couple of months now. I love your work! And I also love how you talk about a lot of new/unknown bands and artists that I´ve been listening to for the last 3 years, like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Amyl and the Sniffers, Foxy Shazam, Louis Cole and now, Psychedelic P*rn Crumpets!! CZcams sure is amazing for discovering new artists!!! Please make a video about the british band The Church of the Cosmic Skull!! Much love!!
I live for the Jagger-esque "Ere! HoW cOMes you HAVen'T ..." performances
Just listen to the entire album on Pandora and man I like them guys man. very talented. Thank you once again Justin
The screen was cropped so it read. “Now we’re here , everything’s uncle. “ great lyric.
Yes, the singer is English. Also I tend to see "Psychedelic" as more of a description of the band's aesthetic and image more than a description of the music.
Sorry to hear KGATLW demonetized your video. Why on earth would they do that? It's free PR for them. The only reason I've ever heard of them is because of this channel!
I'd imagine it's an algorithmic demonetisation set up so that people don't upload their songs and take their revenue, could be wrong though.
Most likely their management took it down, I can’t imagine themselves caring enough to take action
This really doesn't make sense, since they often release a lot of free stuff. See the description the Polygondwanaland in their official site: "This album is FREE. Free as in, free. Free to download and if you wish, free to make copies. Make tapes, make CD's, make records". They also released raw footage to fans make their own videoclips for the "Automation" song.
The bots do it automatically wether the artist wanted it or not, I think quite a few bands now have outright stated they don't mind their stuff being used. Leads to some really dumb/funny sht as well, like Snoop Dogg getting his stream cut for playing his own fkn music 🙄
The lead singer is actually a brit who has lived in Perth for many years. hence maybe hearing that ‘twang’ in his voice. Great bloke as well, had a beer with him before a gig earlier last year!
8👍thxs Justin for riding again
From AZ
If the music career ever went south, unlikely, then radio presenting could see you through. Great voice.
Psychedelic music for me is music that is inspired by and that stimulates people under the effect of said
Reminds me a bit of Karnivool, also from that part of the world. Great stuff as always Justin.
I love your "Heyuh! Hows comes he is or ain't...etc etc etc."
We need a full version of the theme tune Justin. Em9👍😎🎸
We also need a guitar tutorial
@@yusufamir3010 I smell a challenge....
Sometimes a “Em7” doubled 3rd👍🎶
Cool band , never heard of them before..Thanxs.. I thought it would be brill to hear your view on the band.. All Them Witches. Great Vid.
I'd love to see Justin cover an Enter Shikari song. Sonically, there is nobody out there doing what they do despite reinventing themselves each album!
Justin! You are amazing brother. Don’t know what these guys issue is lol I’m going to send you a song from my solo project and I’d be honored to get a real reaction from you good or bad. Keep kicking ass my friend. You are an amazing musician with an incredible sense of humor. Rock on \../
Start is a little like a sped up Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix, love it. There was a bit of grooving out to 60's style of music in Australia in the 80's. Hoodoo Gurus, and the album, Mars Needs Guitars! is a groovy body of work.🎸☮
Question day submission!
Hi Justin - I was watching a rerun of Queen - the story of bohemian rhapsody which you guys make an appearance on as the ‘band of the moment’ (very cool!) and it got me thinking… can you share the origin story of The Darkness’s relationship with Rufus and how this came to be?
@Justin Would love if you took a gander at The Beth's "Expert in a Dying Field" or the harder rockin "Silence is Golden."
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnn 🎶🎶🎶🎶
Agaaaaaiiinnnn
i saw them earlier this year, very very good live show.
I loved it. Never heard it before. Like instant oxygen to the brain for me. Cure for depression. "Five years on and it feels like the start" sounded like Syd Barrett. I love psychedelic rock. See also Strawberry Alarm Clock---"Incense & Peppermints" with Nehru jackets and long beads--give it to me, I love it. Please see also Sound Machine 'Talk Talk' with the band members each wearing a heavy glove on the right hand. Can't explain that, but trippy and funny none the less. "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf is. For an example of Psychedelic Blues I would think would be "Day Of The Eagle" Robin Trower.
The guy with Crumpets pronounced the phrase "Life On Your Own" like we do in southern USA laaaaf on yurr ohhnn. The sound of the unrelenting guitar seems like what you would hear in your head in a busy metro train station in Germany.
Main riff is hendrix inspired
On the subject of psychedelic music, would love to hear your thoughts on Eddie Hazel's insane guitar solo on Maggot Brain 🤯🐛
Cheers Lorna!
This band are amazing live…such a fun outfit!
I'd love to hear you talk about some Frank Zappa - great songs like Camarillo Brillo, Uncle Remus, or Muffin Man. Truly one of the greatest and most underappreciated guitar players ever. Love what you're doing!
Frank is a golden god
Thanks for the suggestions Brien!
Thanks!
Interesting track. almost Sounded a bit 90s to me, more than 60s (which is what I think of when I hear the descriptor psychedelic). Thanks JHawkins!
You should check out The Doublejumps, psychedelic band from New Zealand
This guy is relentlessly cool.
Sounds like early muse! Lovely stuff and ride on!
Never heard of these guys until watching your video, and I'm finding it hard to believe I've lived this long without them in my life. Cheers for the introduction!
P.S. It's definitely drugs.
I enjoy your channel in an age where I don’t see much hope for music. You turned me on to some good groups that I’ve followed up on.
I wanted to make sure that Texas artist
Paul Cauthen was on your radar. He’s probably the best low register singer and a fantastic song writer, he and his band are reshaping modern country. Some stand outs you might enjoy; Slow down, big velvet, freak… he’s signed but hasn’t blown up… he should and you Justin Hawkins believe in a fing called love 🤘🎶🤘
Another awesome Oz band is The Blackwater Fever. Definitely worth checking out.
Thumbs up on the work Justin. I like King Gizzard etc song Iron Lung. Had a little shuffle around on Spottybum and well PPCrumpets don't float my boat but that is cool. Take care mate.
Hey Justin! Im curious to hear what you think of Charlie Crockett- Cowboy Candy
Love the channel can't wait to see more!
saw quite a few aussie psychedelic bands last year and the psychedelic porn crumpets were probably the best live, the energy in the room was top notch
Totally agree with your Supergrass comment - “caught by the fuzz , yes I was, still on the buzz” 😂
For Aussie music, I'd love to hear your opinions on TISM. They're not a new band but they were/are? Very exciting, especially their live shows
TISM are awesome
Justin, can you review the new Cult song, “Give Me Mercy”? ❤
Psychedelic sounds of the Thirteenth Floor Elevators is my favorite psych record. Hail hail Roku Erricson
When I think of contemporary psychedelia I think of Acid Mothers Temple. Great levitation sessions version of Dark Star Blues on here . .
Love your thang Justin....keep em' coming. Unfortunately, wrong song for the Crumpet boys. PLEASE try "Cubensis Lenses" for that real Supergrass/Kula Shaker/Arctic Monkeys/Gizzard sound, with all those time changes you were looking for. Tip of the hat good Sir...🙌🤘
I like to imagine the start percussive pattern on the guitar went on for atleast a minute 😂👍
I really love psychedelic music, for me I think it’s drowned in effects…reverb, distortion, fuzz. That’s what makes it. Music to trip too! I would love to hear your thoughts on the Brian Jonestown Massacre and if you haven’t seen the documentary of them and The Dandy Warhol’s, it’s called DIG! It’s an amazing rock n roll journey into the lives of these two bands in the 90s. Rock n Roll at its finest…if you have a chance to listen to Anemone…by the BJM it’s a dreamy 60s infused psychedelic masterpiece.
Hey Justin,
I have recently become a fan of your podcast and it makes me reflect on a time (roughly 20 years ago) when I saw you in a WHSmith on Baker Street thumbing through a home interior magazine (I don’t know if you remember me). Now knowing what a clever interesting fella you are, I regret not saying hello and often imagine how the encounter would have played out. I wonder if you would indulge me in a piece of fan fiction as to how you think it would have played out if I had indeed approached you and said hello to see if it matches my fiction?
Tropical Fuck Storm definitely worth a listen.
For sure. Thier great live.
yes ! discovered them years ago and never thought theyd get anywhere because of the name but really deserve to because of their sound.
You should check out The Doublejumps if you like King Gizz
is that a painting of rocky dennis i see in the background ? :)
This is the only song I’ve heard from them, kinda has Mars Volta vibes 👍🌀👍
Edit: please make an episode on Parquet Courts, Viagra Boys (Slow Learner live in the billiards hall), The Frights (Beach Porn), Squid (Houseplants), Bear vs Shark live on Audiotree?…. Andrew Jackson Jihad?
You seem very talented,,, perfect pitch? I’m always glad to run into people from my teenage years still kickin’! Hell yeah, keep pushing
I love Viagra Boys.!They played the soundtrack to my first tattoo in a grimey parlour in Fremantle.
Please cover Deafheaven or the “Blackgaze” genre, would love to see your first impressions on this genre because you undeniably “get it” when it comes to music as a music fan.
Cool shirt mate!
You should review "Not My Real Life" by Polyenso. Very psychedelic itself and it's a band that's not very well known but DEFINITELY should be! Killer music and lyrics those guys put out. And Brennan's voice is amazing!
So for the last 3 years, I have been playing in a country/idk band. I started wanting to write more. Question, how important is staying true to yourself and your musical vision? Fans and fame vs no fame and making music YOU like.
The main riff sounds exactly like a sped up version of Foxey Lady.
Hey Justin I was wondering whether you'd consider giving Ren a listen. The song is called Hi Ren and it's about him battling with himself and mental health issues. It goes beyond being a typical song and I really feel its a real piece of art. Poetic. He currently isn't signed to a label so any exposure would help him alot. He's such a talented lad.
I love your videos BTW..youre a legend 🤘
That's my Favorite!!
I recommend you interview an interesting musician about their craft and see how that goes. A little expansion on the format, so to speak. You're the right fellow for the job.
You should do an episode on Acid Mothers Temple.
Ser Justin! Can you take a look at the band Vola?
I like the Chanel, I learn stuff and I laugh, it’s a good hang, I wanna hear your take on Deadhead by Devin Townsend
Riff sounds like Winona's big brown Beaver
Came here to say this! I knew I couldn't be the only one.
Haha, add me in! I was about to comment the very same! Speaking of Primus & psychedelia, did anyone here get into The Claypool Lennon Delirium? There was some excellent psych rock on those few albums. They even did an entire EP of covers of some of its og's (Floyd, Crimson, The Who, etc) It's worth a listen if you haven't yet! I'd suggest starting with their first album 'Monolith of Phobos.'
Very Primus.
Favourite band : )
EAGHH! I implore you to share your thoughts on ALT-J's music, particularly recent song "philadelpia"... eahhg, god willing Mr Muscle Hawk
Psychedelic music is hypnotic music, typically but not always informed by the use of entheogens.
Sounds like the base line to “Immigrant Song”.
Check out Tropical Fuck Storm, also an out there Aussie outfit. They're brilliant. Ex-singer from The Drones.
This reminds me of suggesting a vid topic:
Worst band names.
Tropical Fuck Storm's first album is one of the best modern rock releases period.
Saw them Live we travelled 3 hours to see them, worth every minute they are one of my favourite finds. Another favourite find is Wolf People. My Fiancee and I have the same tastes in music and that's a reason to marry her :) Love your vids Justin.
The jhra theme will be the opening track on the forthcoming muscle hawk album
pls analyze the music of Earthless. thank you hawk man
Hi Justin! Not sure if you have already but it would be cool to see you cover the aussie bands Ocean alley or the Dune rats. Ocean Alley describe themselves as psychedelic-surf-rock and I believe Dune rats are more rock, maybe garage rock.
“Psychedelic” to me refers to a particular era in the late 60’s when acid aka lsd was a novelty to the mainstream. I the case of this contemporary music I don’t get the reference. What’s psychedelic about it?
That main riff is just a sped up version of Jimmy Hendrix Foxey Lady! That’s about the only connection to psychedelia… If Hendrix was indeed anything really psychedelic anyway?
A really good psyche rock band you should check out that's been around forever is the band Earthless, they're really good, in my opinion. I feel the definition of psychedelic rock/metal is hard to define, but characteristics I've noticed that are almost certain in every song is, Evoking some kind of feeling in the listener reminiscent of being on a psychedelic, Echoing and reverberated guitars and vocals, many times set in the blues, but taking an almost Jimi Hendrix, SRV approach to the classic blues notations, basically taking blues scales, and going absolutely crazy on them. Downtuned guitars/basses, some bands in this genre I listen to tune all the way down to C standard lol. A shortlist of recommendations besides Earthless would be, Candlemass/Pentagram/SLEEP/Electric Wizard for Doom metal, for Modern Psychedelic rock Eathless, Sons Of Otis (Windows Jam)Dead Meadow, Glowsun (Specifically the album Eternal Season), then Stoner Rock, Fu Manchu, 1,000 mods, Unida, and Dozer ( Listen to Rising It's a instant banger.) I added Doom metal/Rock, and Stoner rock into this, because I feel they're different sides of the same coin, to understand it truly, you have to experience all avenues that make up the sound. Kind of like you would start out listening to AC/DC, then work up to Black Sabbath, then work up to Metallica.
keep up the good work M Hawkins
yeah you said it hard to tell what this is lol many bands in the last 15 plus years are just bars of soap being pushed by the establishment let's be honest great vocals good hooks good lyrics are hard to find I think you should look more for obscure bands not what the establishment is feeling us your show will separate from the rest check out this new badass band
Strange legend good day to you cheers
Hey, Justin me old fruit, how about a reaction to another tremendous Aussie band, Hiatus Kaiyote. Check out Red Room. Personally, I think it's an absolute banger! Much love
i saw them live in September for their first headlining US show and it was insane
same here. I've never seen an audience like it. absolutely loved it
Good question. Don’t know the answer. If you come up that would fit, could we have a Be Nice” episode every once in a while? I found them so entertaining! This music was great, I’d just watched an old video that happened to be a “Be Nice” one.
I'm honestly just waiting for footage of Justin Hawkins riding the first time. I enjoy a good sequel but I wouldn't mind knowing the origin story.
man i would love to see you cover Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. i think that you would dig them if you haven't already heard them.
Please do Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree and/or Snarky Puppy
This show is a hoot.
you HAVE to listen to their others songs i highly recommend "cornflake" and "Denmark / Van Gogh & Gone" they give the best impression of psychedelia.
You should react to black Country new road
Hair on point today Jussy
Agreed- I think he got the front bits tidied up. Looks like he did for Last of Our Kind album.
I saw them in concert this year. Damn good. All tone and little self indulgence, they rock the fuck out live. More garage rock than psych imo. On their albums they seem to stretch out more and the production is rather old school, harking back to the tape manipulation production techniques of 60s and 70s. In a way it's a good decision when they play live to stick to high energy garage rock in favour to the swirly trippy soundscapes (but there's a touch of that in concert too)
The way he says King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is gold.
