39:04 "It has a design philosophy that is so obvious, so fundamental, that every game can and should incorporate it because it would simply make every game better. As for what that design philosophy is, I can't explain it to you..."
I do gamedev / am a Godot Engine contributor, so I'll do my best to take a crack at it.
    1. Outer Wilds is a curiosity-driven game. The player's goals are not explicitly provided to them by the game. Nor is Outer Wilds the ever-touted "player's make their own goals" type of sandbox. There *is* an endgame. There *is* a purpose behind everything. But the level designers specifically layout the story as discoverable breadcrumbs that connect to a story behind-the-scenes. This makes it feel as though the game world "lives on" independently of the player, and the player is merely stepping their toe into that world and getting involved. It feels less "game-y" when the world revolves around the player's existence. The game feels more alive, and in turn, improves the immersiveness of the experience.
    2. Outer Wilds is a knowledge-driven game. Typical player progression of adventure games: Use explicit tutorials or clever level design to introduce new mechanics to player. The entire game gradually 1) introduces a new mechanic, 2) demands mastery of the mechanic to progress, 3) optionally demands mastery of combinations of mechanics, and 4) optionally grants rewards for players who backtrack and use learned mechanics to solve lock-and-key style puzzles for "secrets". There is often a clear linear or branching-but-linear progression that forms a sequence of increasing difficulty.
In contrast, Outer Wilds' levels are all laid bare for the player to discover all at once. The player quickly (within a few minutes) acquires *all* of the mechanics they will ever get (player cam, jump, thrusters, ship, flashlight, camera-drone, soniscope) in a simple tutorial beginner area. The rest of the game permeates with macro-scale systems engineered into the level design that affect interactions with *many* objects ("laws" regarding quantum objects, black/white holes, tornado/jellyfish/angler/dark bramble, ghostfire, gravity/gravitational changes/cannons/teleportation). This is distinct from one-off mechanics regarding interactions with a *specific* object. They are often fundamental rules about the fictional physics systems in Outer Wilds that a player must re-educate themselves with in order to leverage those systems.
The closest equivalent to it is Breath of the Wild which similarly teaches the player a few mechanics in the opening hours and then has a huge variety of challenges and mysteries that rely on using those basic mechanics with environmental puzzles *also* relying on macro-scale systems (wood/cloth + fire/updrafts, water/ice, electricity/metal, statis/hitting, etc.). However, that is a different experience. All of the challenges/puzzles are self-contained, one-off events with private stories (divine beasts / lost woods) or no story (shrines, korok seeds) that have *no* mechanical/lore relation to other spaces. The most mysterious things in the game, dragons, are just that: mysterious with a tidbit of lore and some item bonuses. No greater truths/events hidden behind them.
Compare to Outer Wilds: Every discoverable fact about one space will inevitably carry with it hints towards a greater mystery related to it or even the starting breadcrumbs of an entirely different mystery somewhere else. All of the spaces' lore and secrets are interconnected by their subject matter. When you stumble on something interesting/different, the secret behind it is always meaningful rather than something that has no impact like BotW's shrines/seeds (95% of its content).
Outer Wilds is different from BotW systems specifically in that BotW's systems are (largely) grounded in reality while the Outer Wilds' systems are grounded in a tweaked version of reality. Similar enough to be intuitive *at first*, but different enough that things don't work quite the way you'd expect and there are many unknown variables at play. It is only by better understanding those variables that one grasps the mechanics of how to properly interact with the world in order to progress. On the flip side, BotW is much more permissive, allowing a large number of mechanical applications to result in success. It is less important to investigate, discover, and grasp specific systemic mechanics than it is to grasp a few simple systemic mechanics and creatively apply them in many scenarios.
For other games to employ Outer Wilds' techniques, you'd need more games to introduce their mechanics as macro-scale systems impacting many things all at once (harder to balance performance / craft level design). You'd need to focus less on isolated mechanics and more on simpler mechanics that can be applied in a myriad of scenarios. You'd need more story content to be revealed as actively ongoing without the player's involvement (difficult in multi-quest, story-driven games that *don't* have a time loop). You'd need story elements to be *capable* of unfolding in an unordered manner, resolving to multiple distinct story threads that culminate in a final conclusion once all discovered (difficult to write, difficult to cohesively deliver without breaking the story itsef). Honestly, it's a wonder they managed to craft Outer Wilds as it is.

You absolutely nailed it. Its a perfect description of what Outer Wilds manages to do better than like every other game. And still it does it so naturally within the games world. I would really much love atleast some parts of it in modern games. But Outer Wilds manages to do quite some difficult things (non-linearity, no map markers, no quests) and still feel just so perfectly concluded.
I think no game is like so game-y like Outer Wilds. Just because I think Outer Wilds is a game that is sooo deep in its core a real game. This piece of art can just work as a game. No other medium could create this experience than games. This game really shows what games are capable of. Not just what writers, actors, stories, music, gameplay etc. are capable of. No this is something of what no other medium could create the feeling it creates even close.
Its like a child which discovers the world and everything in it for the first time.
This game creates this feeling for adults to feel this childish couriosity again on a excellent way.
I love it really much when a game is serious with its players and trusts them and respects the players intelligence.
I know quite many do this in their story but this game even does it in its core gameplay-loop. That entire thing builds on the player himself.
Many games are telling great stories and such things but then like every step is guided by its creators.
Oh btw i have one more recommendation for you. Patholigic 2. A game where quite some of these factors are done really well too with a great mistery and the players freedom to solve it. its not as nonlinear as Outer Wilds but time is also very important here. You play in like 7 days i think and every day things change. They do that change with every decision the player made. So every decision build on the last one and what intrigued me the most is the meta-level behind things aswell as the greater mysterie. But it is a game which dont want to be fun. Its ruthless. A players decision once made stands. The player cant do all quests. In the beginning maybe even just very few (which makes a great replayability).
I would also like to hear more recommandations from you :) Your discription gave me the feeling that we have a similar taste there.

This video truly is both a celebration of 2019's games and Skill Up / Ralph's experience with them. The context provided along with each title ushers in memories of the journey that we all took with him this year. I feel like what I'm saying is incredibly obvious if you paid attention, but yet so many year end videos fail to truly express the person's own experience with the titles.
Here's to 2020 and finding new experiences to love that we never saw coming!

I see a trend with "Epic exclusives" ( which are sometimes available on PC game pass too ), they make a lot of noise before release because of the controversy, then they release, most people agree they're meh and immediately forget about them.
Even Borderlands 3, a week after release nobody was talking about it anymore, and I didn't see anyone putting it on their GOTY list yet. That's weird considering how many fans were hyped for that game.

Let me just start off by saying that you have, over the course of 2019, come to be my favorite reviewer by a mile. Quite a few miles in fact.
The structure of your videos and the amount of care that goes into them is heartwarming and I found myself to agree with most of your points for about every one of your reviews I have seen so far. The choice of game scenes, the music selection, the clear and concise way of communicating your personal feelings as well as objective aspects about each game are top notch and in some cases I found myself re-watching certain reviews multiple times because they were not only incredibly informing but also very entertaining to watch by themselves.
I believe I found your channel through your review of Monster Hunter: Worlds, after having finished the game's story line and already having spent a few hundred hours playing it. Seeing someone else putting out their love for this game to the world like this moved me immensely and I do still come back to the video from time to time just to hear you talk about its qualities and achievements. However, even for games that I have never played or have no intention of playing, I still love hearing your opinions about them to decide whether they would fit my preferred style of playing or are just worth going out of one's comfort zone for.
While I do not entirely agree with all of the placements in this particular video, as is to be expected, every point you made is so well thought through that I came to question my own opinions in favor of a more objective view on these games. A prime example for this, yet not the only one, is Death Stranding, a game that I did not connect to whatsoever before but might just pick up and play for myself after hearing what you had to say about it.
So, to keep this already rather lengthy comment as concise as possible, thank you for putting in so much effort and love into your work. I hope to see much more from you in the years to come.

Play DMC5. Seriously, play it. Months on, people are still refining their craft and finding new interactions in the game. I wouldn't say the game does anything really new, but it's, in my opinion, the best higher speed/intensity action game ever made. The sheer wealth of options and ways to play is incredible, and the game's careful never to ask too much of the player, even on the higher difficulty levels. Nero alone is a masterclass in making a character who is easy to play and understand, but takes hundreds if not thousands of hours to truly master.

I remember when I was in school talking to my English teacher about how I didn't think Ulysses by James Joyce was a great book because it wasn't especially fun to read. I remember he said "does art have to be fun to be great?" That question really resonated with my experience of Death Stranding, which (like Ulysses) takes a very mundane experience and stretches it out into an, at times alienating and over-indulgent, incredibly long experience that ultimately has an overwhelmingly emotional payoff. The medium of games is maturing in my mind, and we've got to that point of art history where realism has been more or less achieved so we're free to stretch sideways into the means of communication unique to this medium. Death Stranding is by no means the first game to do so, just as Ulysses was by no means the first piece of literature to feature stream of consciousness, or focus on the mundane or even be so esoteric, but I can see it going down in history as one of those primary cultural signposts in the same way that Ulysses did: a point at which the medium stopping focusing on one thing and started reaching for something else.

Just because you enjoy new unique experiences doesn't mean you will enjoy Death Stranding, just like even if you don't you still might. Hell, sometimes it's not even a matter of the gameplay loop, since I for example found Death Stranding absolutely boring because of all of the monotonous walking around doing glorified escort missions, instead this time the thing you're escorting is your cargo, but love something like the Digimon World 1 style games(so World 1, Re:Digitize, Re:Digitize:Decode and -Next 0rder-) in which you're essentially a glorified single parent raising 1(or 2 in -Next 0rder-) Digimon that does little more than eat, shit, train and fight.
