    The battery-powered pickup is a different beast than the rest of its EV siblings. It must do everything expected of a car or SUV and be powerful enough to carry a heavy payload and tow even more weight, all without draining its battery. That problem has taken automakers-both legacy brands and start-ups-some time to resolve, but the answer appears to be here. The Proof: Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer EV, Ford F150 Lightning. Yes, they are “Delivered”.
    But today our focus is on upcoming electric pickup trucks, likely to hit the road soon in the US. Some of these trucks not only can tow and carry a solid payload, but they can accelerate like a sports car and are fun to drive.

    A full sized truck with a 1300 pound cargo captivity isn't a full sized truck, it's a CUV that looks like a truck. The claim of being able to "tow 10,000 pounds" is a laugh. With a standard trailer (not 5th wheel) you put 10% of the weight of the trailer and it's cargo onto the truck hitch. 10% of 10,000 is 1000 pounds. With only a 1300 pounds of cargo capacity that leaves 300 pounds for other cargo; including fuel, passengers, tools, and the driver.

    So far the Chevy with 4 wheel steer looks very promising , but they need to make sure it has a 600 mile driving capability one way with a full cargo load , for us folks that live out in the Mountains of Western Canada , with deep snow , ice and temperatures that go 45 below 0 degrees . REMEMBER ! ....IN COLD WEATHER THE BATTERIES LOSE CLOSE TO 50 % OF THEIR CHARGE!!!!!!. THERE ARE VERY FEW CHARGING STATIONS ON OUR REMOTE HIGHWAYS SO IT WILL BE A REAL CHALLENGE . ANOTHER POINT ! ...DIRECTED TO THE MANUFACTURERS....MAKE THE BODY IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT ABSORBS THE SUN'S LIGHT ENERGY LIKE A SOLAR PANEL . ...AND WHEN THE WHEELS BRAKE OR ROTATE THEY CHARGE THE BATTERIES AS WELL !!!!...AND REMEMBER !!!! BIG WINDOWS ARE WONDERFUL BUT THEY HAVE NO THERMAL EFFICIENCY AND LET THE COLD IN AND EXCESSIVE HEAT IN , ON VERY HOT SUNNY DAYS...ALSO ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN A ROLL OVER OR CONTACT WITH A SOLID OBJECT, SENDING GLASS FLYING EVERYWHERE ...i WOULD LOVE TO SIT DOWN WITH THESE ENGINEERSAND CHAT WITH THEM ABOUT A FEW THINGS THAT WOULD BE GOOD TO IMPLEMENT INTO THEIR DESIGNS FOR SAFETY .

    Not enough charging infrastructure. Ecstatic with free upgrade to an EV in Orlando (it had 1/4 charge). Researched 2 hours to find one charger 2 resorts away. Sat for an hour in the car to get enough charge to drive the family to dinner. Dropped family off after dinner and went to the charger at 10. It was taken so I limped back home. Barely made it to the charger at midnight and was so relieved to find it available. I walked 20 minutes home. At 5 am, walked 20 minutes to get the car and someone unplugged it to charge their car. Thankful it was back at 1/4 charge - enough to get back to MCO at 6 am and switch to a gas car so we could get back to vacation. Drove without A/C to preserve range. My sister (actively researching electric cars and was having a charging station installed at home) was horrified. We went from can't wait to try it to can't wait to get rid of it in 12 hours. We concluded Hybrid but not electric. Rent an electric car for 2-3 days before buying one just to see if it even works in your area. Can't imagine an F150 lightning in a rural area.

    I would prefer plug in hybrids that will have best of all worlds: the ability to drive all electric for a decent limited distance and fail back to hybrid ICE with high MPG. Makes sense for local commutes for the majority of times and the occasional long hauls. I wish they would give us the interim solution which I think would be the optimal solution for our current environment.

      It's too bad the volt never really took off(probably because it was limited to 55 mph on generator) but a single electric drivetrain with generator just makes far more sense to me than dual drivetrain. Honestly the added aero drag and weight people add to trucks makes them much less predictable for batteries. Besides not being able to charge with unhitching the trailer.

I gave up looking for a close to MSRP Lightning Pro and settled for a Hybrid Maverick. Now I can wait for what I truly wanted an EV or PHEV Tacoma 🤤💙. I understand gas powered work trucks are better for their job but we have to wean ourselves off big oil, if not at least increase the ratio of EV:gas vehicles out there. EVs have their own pollution issues but we have to start somewhere and hopefully we can learn to resolve these issues. If not we are screwed either way.

    The US infrastructure isn't ready for full electric vehicles but we are ready for hybrids. In most cases the electric battery/motor would take the vehicle to a regular day of driving to and from work and to the store with about 50 miles, then at home you would plug it in to charge all night and be ready in the morning and for long trips you could use gas and refill like normal ICE vehicles and the electric battery/motor should help to give you about 5-10 more mpg on gas and when you get to your hotel/cabin/rv spot for vacation you can plug it in over night and be ready for a day of joy riding. That way you have the best of both worlds, one with a 400-500 miles range with the gas and electric and on normal work day driving you don't have to fuel up with gas as you can recharge after a day of driving at home with cheaper electricity compared to gas. Too bad a hybrid cost about $10K more than a similar speced ICE vehicle so it takes about 5yrs of gas savings to pay off that $10K mark up on the sticker. Now if we could only get a $10K tax refund (not credit but actual cash back) to cover the electric mark up then people would be more interested in changing over to a hybrid.

    1st generation truck ev's aren't going to be on everyone's wish list do to power. Hauling loads aren't going to be to spec. , because the ev infrastructure isn't there yet. Not like Gas or Diesel, we are seriously better off going to hydrogen due to the gas infrastructure already available. A difficult transition but I see a ev, hydrogen hybrid. But a ev, gas Diesel hybrid would be more of a buyers option to make the transition into ev and hydrogen easier due to the lack of ev infrastructure. Also our grid infrastructure isn't whole heartily there yet either, so a viable grid infrastructure is needed as well to make the transition into ev/hydrogen easier. Thus the only safe, green option that can met the demand is Nuclear. With a solar and wind backup for grid supply issue support.

    • @Meton2526
      @Meton2526 Před rokem

      Hydrogen is all hype and no substance. Without MASSIVE leaps in the technology, there's no way it's going to be viable, and it still uses the exact same amount of electricity to make the hydrogen from water as it does to charge a BEV to go the same distance. And if you're making the hydrogen from steam reforming of methane, just don't bother, make a natural gas power plant instead, and power the BEVs with it, you'll get better efficiency.
