You think Kelli would understand, being a former DCC, that these girls deserve a decent wage. Everyone deserves to be able to live. $8 an hour is NOT a livable wage (I'm not sure is she controls their pay, but you'd figure she'd fight for them)!

Along with a gym to train, travel and other job related expenses paid, and royalties for income generated by the use of their likeness such as calendars and posters. I'm not even a Cowboys fan and their dancers are iconic. They should not have to pay for their own work related expenses or entertain off the clock. Because it IS a job. They may not be playing football but they work just as hard. They are professional athletes.

Who designed the uniform before the now iconic one? It had a skirt with a body suit blouse and wide belt with stars. They don't have that one in the Smithsonian, just the new one. That one was worn at Super Bowl VI in New Orleans. I know cause I was one of the 10 cheerleaders there.

  • @hadihatab3126
    @hadihatab3126 Před 4 lety +26

While for the most part, the uniforms still look the same as the original, you can tell the difference if you looked hard enough. For one the lapels have more of a western influence now, the go go boots became cowboy boots, the belts became more detailed and the shorts became more low rise after 2005 versus the original mid rise.

And anyone saying its only a seasonal gig is kidding themselves. You have to be maintained, fit and well practiced year round. Nails, hair, tan, gym - that alone is minimum $300 a month. Practices chew up a quarter of your day from what I hear.

I've just watched the film: Daughters of the Sexual Revolution: The
Untold Story of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders & it was
fascinating. I'm not American, so wasn't brought up with a cheerleading
culture, but, for me, *Suzanne Mitchell is a heroine & true feminist* & I'll tell you for why:
There is nothing wrong with utilising human beauty for entertainment
purposes, in fact, its inspirational. It just so happens that nature has
chosen the youthful female form to be above all other forms of beauty.
There is no problem here, as long as these young woman have a *'safe space'*
to offer their beauty to the rest of humanity & if that's the case,
humanity will benefit - humanity will be inspired. Now! Here's why
Suzanne Mitchell is a heroine & true feminist - she provided that
safe space. She didn't just talk about; she actually did it.
These safe spaces are only threatened when the likes of Jerry Jones get their hands on them.
*I'm not a Dallas Cowboys fan, but, I'm a fan of Suzanne Mitchell's Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.*

@@lindacarbone9576 Hey! I think these women chose to be cheerleaders for the same reason that other women choose other jobs. They like it and they want to go above and beyond in order to do it. I admired the heck out of women who are knew they will face hardship and yet chose to overcome it in order to be the best them. This doesn't stop at cheerleaders but extend to women in all areas including male dominated fields like engineering, science, medicine, etc. We may not be able to understand their decisions in choosing certain things, but we can always respect them for it, and if given the opportunity, work to lift each other up to be the best we can be.

I can’t imagine how hard it must be to have a full time job on top of being a DCC and they should absolutely be paid more with a base salary or at least be given free housing during training camp. It’s ridiculous how they have to not only pay for but even be expected to find temporary housing for the summer is an added stress they don’t need. I think the online semifinal auditions they did during COVID as well the housing they provided Aka “the bubble” should be adopted for every training camp.

They're not part of the game...but they are. They're "entertainers" just like the players. They're also athletes (dancers) & artists (creative), like the players.

What's bad, nowadays in the last 20 years, is that all the girls now have the same exact hairstyles. You can't even tell who is who nowadays. I loved how they looked in the 70's, 80's, & early to mid 90's. Some had ponytails, short hair, curly hair, & waist length hair. You could tell who was who, when you watched them. Like, "hey there's Suzette, hey there's Vonciel!"....Nowadays, they look too much alike, in my opinion. No individual style or look anymore. So sad.

Leana Jo Murphy that’s just fashion in general nowadays, back then people followed trends but there was more leeway to express yourself while still remaining in style because the fashion itself was more out there. Nowadays the styles are more minimal and subdued so you’re not able to step out as much without being looked at as weird so people end up looking more like clones.

If you’re talking about the close-up of the brunette cheerleader at 4:13 when they mention that Kelli used to cheer, that’s NOT Kelli. Kelli cheered in the 80’s, and she had sort of short-medium length dark blonde hair (although it seems to get lighter as the years pass). If you go to the DCC website, there’s a “History” section where you can see all the team photos from the past. Kelli cheered from ‘84-89. You probably wouldn’t even notice her in most of them, but in the one from 1988, she’s the center girl at the very bottom (on the floor), and it’s the best picture of her that I’ve ever seen. (The one from ‘87, the year before, isn’t bad either, but her hair looks way better in the ‘88 version IMHO.)

I absolutely agree these ladies should be paid more. But remember that they’re there for the love of it, and maybe the glamour - not for the pay.
Being a cheerleader is not a career, that’s why virtually all of them have college degrees and have a career elsewhere.
Yes, they practice a ton - which makes them so great. But being a DCC is a choice. I’d think they’re get far more out of the experience (like free worldwide travel and meeting so many people) than just a paycheck.
If you want an easier cheerleading job, go to the Lions or Bears. Haha

The main reason why I came to see this video is because I was looking for the presences of the Black women who helped build the MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SPORTS EMPIRE that the Dallas Cowboys is today. I wonder what issues and problems if any that they faced and if they networked with other Black NFL and NBA cheer girls across the country. I would love to find surviving Black women who were NFL dancers going back to the 1960s and 1970s and interview them to discuss the racial problem in the business and how they managed and balanced jobs, family, dating, school and other pursuits they were after while they were in their prime.
Girl, I know what you mean.
I am a trained dancer of over 10 years, with 8 years of competitive gymnastics and tumbling experience and I am a Black American girl..so I know how tough it is in performing arts and show business for Black females, especially if your complexion isn't very light.
I am from Phoenix, born and raised, so I have talked for years about how the Phoenix Suns franchise needs to hire more Black females (not only biracial ones or light complexioned) NBA basketball cheerleaders and the Arizona Cardinals hire more NFL cheerleaders.
I have seen Dallas Cowboys cheerleader tryouts for the last 3 years and more and more Black women are coming out to audition, several of them were "chocolate" girls, so I definitely see where you are coming from about team placement. They need to work on having more than two Black women on their roster. Black women definitely played a powerful role in helping build the Cowboys NFL empire after the 1968 national desegregation decision. Please keep in mind that I myself have some Southern heritage, along the Old Cotton Belt region, so I know how management can be. But at the end of the day innovativeness, style, beauty, talent, integrity, work ethic and business prowess can shatter barriers and beat biases, prejudice and racism. Thank you for having the courage to speak out about the continued lack of Black female representation in the professional NFL and NBA cheerleaders/dancer business. I also wish that every NBA and NFL team would pay these girls a liveable wage, at least $15/Hour. Every team franchise has tons of money to make this change but refuse to do it! That would definitely make the business more competitive, help give the dancers more stability and help open more doors. I have done so much here in Arizona and after I left the dance scene out here I got into industrial and skilled trades work, the homebuilding trade. Which is more uphill battles, ones I don't intend on losing. Your honesty is refreshing. Peace.

@@alexw853 I read and loved the insight you’ve giving me as Phoenix Suns and I couldn’t agree with you more about chocolate 🍫 girls needed more along with the DCC’s in the 60s, 70s that faced racism ,however, I did see one lady speaks on that. I want to see a big change not just 1 or 2 to appeased AFRICAN AMERICANS ‼️

@@kikieaddy2576 So very true. I myself am not darker skinned, but I do come from a "high yellow"/yellowbone dad from the deep South and a mother who is chocolate complexion with burgundy undertones in her skin so I do understand how colorist sentiments around marketing and prospects in life can affect someone. I am more "medium toned" (brownskinned with some reddish undertones). I mean I do admit that my strongest traits are my natural facial good looks, my good grade of hair that is past armpit length (I don't wear or need fake hair), my great choreography pick up skills and the fact that I never miss a beat. When I trained with people like Shane Sparks (Black American), Chuck Maldonado (he's Caribbean/West Indian) and Gigi Torres (she's Filipina) they all told me I have strong musicality, that I "feel" the music very well. I left Dance because I got injured, my weight was fluctuating, and I couldn't afford it anymore. The year I left in late 2015 was when I was actually supposed to have gone to HHI (Hip Hop International) to compete. This Dance stuff is hard and is not for the faint of heart and is NOT for Black females who are in denial of the fact that we have to work 20 times harder or more to even make CUTS AND CALLBACKS. I was noticed by Kip Helt, who was entertainment director of the Phoenix Suns, not sure if he still is now. The Sun team's darkest female cheer dancer was Monique who is of Jamaican ancestry.
One thing I wish these NFL and NBA franchises would do is donate to Negro causes like housing redevelopment, which I happen to be pushing for here in Arizona-- because Negroes have definitely laid foundations of every industry across the country including these INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AMERICAN SPORTS EMPIRES. I wonder if the Cowboys will recognize the Black Wall street centennial? :(
      It's this Summer.
I am angry as hell about the KB/Kobe Bryant situation and frankly I never saw what was all the fuss about the Lakers guys or the Laker girls..one of their few best ones was Paula Abdul who isn't a Black woman, and a former employer of mine went to college with her (that employer is 1/4 Black American and from Inglewood, she danced with Paula in college).
Me personally I do see the other problem with the low wage being paid to NFL and NBA girls, they need to be paid more besides having a side career. It's not fair that the players are being paid millions and most of those guys (Black or not) don't even invest those millions in marriages with BLACK women or into the historic Black populated areas. Heartbreaking how those earnings have no "trickle down effect" when it comes to Black women. I happen to be on my way to Architecture school too to help address the national problems at hand as it pertains to us. Believe it or not,
I AM here in Arizona putting in that work.
