  • Using a roasting rack and trivet (or aluminum foil heat shield) is one of the best ways to really expand what you can do on your Weber Q grill. However, there are two mistakes that you need to avoid, while using the Weber Q Roasting Pack (which includes a rack and trivet).

    Hi Jerry, great video. I live in Australia and never use the genuine trays, always foil. I do have the rack. Foil works fine, you can add extra layers to alter your cooking time too if you want to slow it down. Love your videos you put so much effort into them and they are so professional. Look forward to the next!

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  Před rokem +2

      Great tip about the extra foil. I use just a single layer, but I guess a double layer would make it a little bit more sturdy, but is another way to control the heat a bit more.

    I've been grilling indirect way more often since I saw your first post and totally love it! It really makes my Webber so much more useful! I order from Amazon the rack and tray set, and the only "mistake" I made was not putting and holes in the pan, but given that I always cook to temperature, it hasn't been a problem for me! You're doing a great job Jerry, thank you and happy holidays!

    Great video Jerry !!
    We like cooking indirectly on the grill and our rack has legs on both sides. One set is slightly higher.
    We’ve also learnt the hard way that set times don’t work and the meat thermometer is your best friend (unless you have a dog)

    Great vid, Jerry. I bought the roasting kit but realised quickly that the aluminium pan, while useful, was way more expensive than a couple of layers of foil! Love roasting on my Q, comes out beautifully every time. I am lucky enough to be in Australia and my Q is on a sheltered patio so it holds a steady temp. I need to try a really nice rib roast!

    Great video again. Instructions I found was to use 2 layers of foil under the trivet. I fold a large piece in half & cut a few holes through both layers. Works well. I regularly cook roasts including roasted veggies. Much easier than cleaning the kitchen oven.

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  Před rokem

      Interesting - I've never found 'official' instructions on this roasting workaround. Two layers of foil would make the whole setup sturdier so maybe I will start doing that. We definitely roast on the grill more than we do in the oven for the reason you stated - clean up is easier!

    To be honest, I've never heard of this Weber heat shield before this video. I always use something else. But I've checked over here in Germany at Amazon and you can get them here too. -> "Weber 6562 Hitzeschild für Q-Bratenrost groß, 4 Stück" for around 10€ ... and a 30m (100 feet) roll of aluminum foil for 4€. So no question, what you should buy. 🤪😁✌️

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  Před rokem +1

      I found it on Amazon here as well for about the same price ($10) but it ships from Japan and costs an extra $30. No thank you! Aluminum foil roll it is!

      @@ChicagoGriller over here you can get it the next day via Amazon prime...but 10€ is still to much.
      What I've done before is putting a roasting rack on an aluminum grease tray. With that combination you won't have to think about putting the rack directly on the flame and the dripping fat gets catched directly too. ;)

Convenient to have this pre-fabricated and reusable tray, but that price is a bit too steep of a price compared to me just tearing off sheets of foil as needed. Your hack looked interesting -- but why not use the toaster oven tray, and drill out some holes (instead of dealign with the aluminum foil each time)? As you point out, consistency is a factor in the time -- so even if the toaster oven equipment is 'self-ventilated", it should provide consistent results?
    As always -- looking forward to the next episode!

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  Před rokem

      True, it would be easier to just drill out a tray... I just don't have a drill strong enough to punch through it. I'd have to borrow one like the time I drilled out a hole for my Q2000 thermometer. But something to consider.
