  • I just got the Orvis Clearwater fly rod outfit combo with the carrying case. I’m going to unbox it and give you my initial thoughts. @The Orvis Company
    This is a 4 piece, 9 ft 5wt fly rod perfect for the rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat and small bass here in Colorado. The rod is easy to assemble with alignment dots on the rod and the reel is easy to take apart and clean or swap fly line. Special thanks to Ron for filming this!

    I have the 3wt 10’ for euro nymphing and high sticking. It’s Orvis, so you have a great company standing behind their products.

      Hey thanks for the video I just ordered one myself. Tip, try assembly from the tip first working back to the butt. Less of a reach and accident.

      That’s awesome, I thing you will enjoy it! That’s a great tip thank you!

      What weight rod did you order?

      @@renegadeflyfishing I got the 2022 combo 9'5wt Clearwater on friday, fished it on a lake Saturday. I really don't know what to compare it to. It's my first budget rod after taking 10 yr break. I do know the swing weight was heavy on the clearwater rod. After six hours of casting I was feeling fatigued. Also the included clearwater overweight line did a good job casting a woollybugger into a light lake breeze, but not with the distance I was looking for. Today Monday I went to an Orvis store and upgraded the combo kit for a Recon 9'5wt, a new clearwater reel spooled with Orvis Smooth power taper (overweight just like the clearwater but higher quality), and a spare clearwater spool with Orvis intermediate sinking line 1.5 ips and a Orvis single rod case that fits everything including the spare spool very nicely and not snug, just right. Looking forward to going back to the lake this weekend and try again.

    I always found it helpful (and a lot easier) to put the top two pieces together, then add the third piece from the tip then put all three on the butt section. You don’t have to reach and pull your shirt tail out of your blue jeans. Also, my eye can judge if they are put on straight, though the alignment dots are nice. No big deal, it simply saves the stretch.

      You are 100 correct. Someone else pointed that out to me too and I made a video to help those like me who were doing the hard way. Thanks for you help! Have you been putting your fly rod together wrong? I was!

    Nice review, I am looking for a good fly rod to start out with. This helps.

      This is a great fly rod to start out with or upgrade too.

    • @sespe33
      @sespe33 Před rokem +2

      I should also add:
      Recon is ~60% upgrade over the Clearwater
      Orvis Helios is ~20% upgrade over Recon
      I have a shoulder and wrist injury in that same week I went back again and upgraded the Recon to helios 3d. (Maximum distance/ least cast effort in Orvis line up)
      Recon is a good rod. But If your older, or fish alot, or have upper body injury you will appreciate the Helios doing more of the casting work.

      @@sespe33 thank you for sharing that information that’s great to know! I feel like the clear water casts great so I can’t imagine how awesome the Helios would be to fish with!
