  • How well can a cheap fly rod work? I ran across a bargain fly rod last summer and tested it at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Missouri. For about $40 I got a rod, reel, backing, fly line, leader, rod case, reel case, and fly box. The results were...interesting.

    I''ve been using a 10 foot, 4 wt MaxCatch Euro Nymphing rod for the past year, and caught hundreds of fish with it last summer (2020) during the pandemic in Montana. Looks good, built well, and works just as well as my old Fenwick. Gotta love it.

    Nice rise @ 4:51, Cheap rods are underrated... unless you're getting a handmade bamboo rod (because they are more art than function), or 18 weight salt water rods (for going after manatees and basking shark), you don't need a really expensive fly rod. But seriously as junk as the fly line likely is, that's a hell of a value for a serviceable reel, rod, flybox, rod case and reel case. I've seen basic rod cases cost > $150 for "cheap" options.

    Question, I live in the KCMO area and am wondering if you fish the stocked trout ponds in winter. How do you do it, assuming you do, and where can I find out when the ponds are stocked cause the hotline doesn't seem to work (as of a few minutes ago)?

      @@randellgribben9772 In the HiFi stereo world they use the term "diminishing returns" to describe what you get depending on how much you spend on stereo upgrades. For example, the difference in sound quality when you go form $50 speakers to $500 speakers is instantly heard. The difference between $500 speakers and $2000 speakers is subtle, most people wouldn't notice. The difference between $2000 speakers and $10000 speakers is so small they have to use equipment to compare frequencies. I feel it's the same with everything, fishing gear for sure. I've found the more expensive rods usually have a better feel, maybe a little smoother casting, etc, but I don't know where the line is. I have mostly $50-$100 rods, same with my reels. I would rather spend my money on multiple rods for specific purposes than break the bank on a rod that is great for one thing but not so great for other things. If that makes any sense.

      @@pastorharrison48 great question! While you don’t necessarily need the backing for big fish that make long runs, it DOES help to fill the spool. By that, I mean that it helps the fly line reach the edge of the spool. I would have at least a little backing just in case you hook a monster while perch fishing. I am a firm believer in the idea of “I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.” As far as the braid idea, that’s pretty clever. I’ve never heard of anyone doing that but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong! I say go for it. I can mail you some backing if you want though. I have a spool that probably has 30-50 yards left on it and I’ll never use it.

    Man, stumbled accidently into your channel. I was on fly tying. ;-) Got hooked by the djent, what a hammermusic. ;-) So I watched the whole video, because this set is here in Germany also avaible. A friend of mine got it and he was enthusiastic at first, in the long run, the rod was not up to the task. Its usable, at least. There is a reason for the pricetag on Hardy,Grey,Loomis,Vision, Sage or Walton Powell. ;-)

      I agree that in many instances, you get what you pay for and if you pay for quality, you usually end up with quality. On the other hand, I have found a few (and I mean few) times where rods of less name notoriety and lower price perform at a similar level as the more expensive rods. You have to look hard, but they are out there.

      Great question! That’s the line that connects the fly line to the reel. It helps to fill up the spool and allow a fish to run further than 90 feet which is the usual length of fly line.

    • @MichealBacon
      @MichealBacon Před 2 lety +1

      Don, I'm Canadian and I own two setups (3/4 and 5/6wt). I paid $109cad and $119 respectively. They're both well worth it and perform flawlessly. NOTE: Make sure the package you're purchasing has the the reel that is machined, very important. The only thing is, I do agree that the rod blanks are a bit stiffer than a higher end comparable rod. That's not a slam, but rather a heads up. So if you're looking for a 3wt setup, stick with the 3wt setup, you will not be disappointed whatsoever. But from there go to a 5wt, do not chose the 4wt. Bump up two at a time - example: 3wt, 5wt, 7wt, 9wt ect.
