Call me crazy John. But the Cousteau album kind of reminded me of Weller's solo stuff mixed with a little Bowie. The same kind of soulful vocals with excellent musicianship. Speaking of Weller. Richard Hawley has collaborated with Paul quite a few times. You choose some very cool revisits John. You are encouraging me to dive a little deeper. I have so many albums that have yet to grace my turntable mat~ Rob/Boston
I don’t know Cousteau but it sounded right up my street! If I do ever see it on vinyl, I’ll pick it up. I love I Am Kloot - not played them in ages so it’s a rummage through my CD collection! Cheers John.
Like the feel of “I am Kloot”.....Cousteau?! Do not know but!!! My my I’m over the moon for the track you shared🙏🏻I like the cover art on the Richard Hawley album, and that monotone sound always works for me...thank you John😎🎶☮️👏🏻
Wow, great stuff. I don’t know those first two artists, but now I need to check them out. I’m a big fan of Richard Hawley, especially Cole’s Corner and Lady’s Bridge era, I could listen to The Ocean over and over again. Spot on with this release, and the different sound. It reminds me of him channeling Oasis.
Good stuff John, I have that I Am Kloot album on CD and I have a feeling I got it after seeing you talking about it in a previous video. I also saw them live at a festival many years ago and they were really good. I followed Richard Hawley for a while when he first broke through ( I used to see him down at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield when my band used to rehearse there) but for some reason I went off him a bit. Coles Corner was the last one I heard and I seem to remember getting the impression he was repeating himself a bit, but I know I'm in the minority there so I should go back and give him another go. Just for the record, we had his song 'The Night is Cold' on our birthing CD for our first son, and that was a terrible labour, so this may explain why I went off him. I'll check out Couteau. Cheers.
Standing At The Sky's Edge was my introduction to Hawley and the only record of his I still own, love it, but haven't pulled it in a long time. Might just do that today.
I have that Cousteau album, but sadly, only on CD. Haven't played it in years. Nice to see it again here, and I'm going to dig it out for a spin. Can't go wrong with Hawley either. 'Coles Corner' my personal favourite too, and your description of 'Standing at the Sky's Edge is spot on. His vocals sound awful compared to his earlier stuff. How do get away with needle drops, John? I've always been worried that YT will start messing with my channel, raking videos down, etc.
Now then. I really should listen to more Richard Hawley. I only have Coles Corner on CD, but I've heard quite a few of his. I always enjoy them. Certainly more than I liked the Longpigs. I love that Cousteau album. I listened to it a lot when it came out. I was listening to loads of Tindersticks at the time, and they seemed very much in the same cabaret-esque vein. Albeit smoother and with less indie cred. It would be nice to have that on vinyl. Never listened to I Am Kloot. Might investigate.
Hi John - I had CDRs of I am Kloot's second and third albums and remember enjoying them but never followed up. I could see them being better than Elbow. Not familiar with Cousteau but they sounded my kind of thing. Agree Standing at the Sky's Edge has a much bigger sound than normal - good but I also don't go back to it as often...
I think you’d like the I Am Kloot album. I certainly prefer them to Elbow. Their sound is more understated. I think sky At Night was their high point. Great songs
I'm not particularly struck on elbow either they don't tickle my funny bone........ Cousteau I saw live in London years ago remember it was an amazing gig but not heard for years I'll have to dig the CD out. Now a guy at church was saying about Richard Hawley making some musical about Sheffield being really good do you know anything about it? Have a good weekend 😎

Great finds, John! Love that Cousteau, especially 'Last Good Day of The Year.' Definitely takes me back 👌🏼

I saw I am Kloot in a tiny bar at the back of the Wolves Civic - he was a really nice guy who signed all our CDs after the gig ! So a great choice 🎉

Cousteau is new to me. What a lovely, wistful song.
Thanks for introducing it to me.
Nice video John. I’m really looking forward to seeing Richard Hawley when he plays at Hammersmith in June - he is so good live - cheers, D
Stellar, John! I’m on the hunt for that Cousteau record now! Thank you for sharing! Cheers!

Hey John, cool video and back story as ever; thanks for the intro to Cousteau, I'm going to hunt down the debut on CD.

Hell yes. 100% SPOT ON!!!
Cheers Tommy!
The Hawley reminds me of later B.R.M.C. Sounds good man.
