I remember one day of vanilla wow back in 2005, me and my brother had been queueing for AV for like 6hrs and it popped during something like 2am and we played for 6 or 8 hrs straight.. It was so amazing I will never forget that day 😍
EXACTLY. Everyone is so fucking focused on the end result of winning, but ignoring the whole point of what made it great in the first place. The journey, the fun constant battlefield you are part of and contributing to, or just being in the same location of.
This is the same kind of situation as we have been with getting Classic WOW. Loving the journey and original state WOW Vanilla Provided, and disliking the state it became in Modern. Except now the we are stuck with modern in form of AV and wishing for Classic AV.... FK...
I loved the many hours long battles in AV, was something that the ppl loving commercial just dont seem to get.
Playing bgs for like 10 mins, after queueing for an hour sux.
At least you knew 9 times out of 10, when you got into AV, you knew you could have hours of fun.
As long as you didn't get ported in to a nearly finished AV that is, that kinda sucked too lol.
@@DanielScutt-nq6ky playing a hunter or druid like I did, walking wasnt that bad, and anyway, it was about the discovery, exploring, trying to get to that place that no one else had been.
Today's casual, no time for anything player, just cant understand.
Besides, there were still flight points, so you only had to do the long walk once, and when you were in a group, or social guild, there were a lot of ppl to chat with, while you were walking.
Today's guilds are full of hundreds of ppl, 95% of which, dont ever speak.
Commercial WoW isnt a sociable place to be.
It's only in Mythic+ and Raids that players get to know each other and that's if they are not using LFG or LFR.

@@DanielScutt-nq6ky What type of dumb logic is that. You are not STUCK doing jack shit. If you don't enjoy the AV than don't play. WTF is even the difference or point in PVPing in general if you are bored of it. Just quit playing then, the game is not for you. Its not about just check marking I got this rank or what ever. The whole point of AV or any bg is to pvp and have fun doing it. The ranks and items are just a nice reward for your efforts.
You do not lessen a feature just because someone wants to checkmark achieving something before ditching it afterwards. You keep it quality and up to snuff for those that are there to enjoy and STAY enjoying the feature, and can continue to do so... Fucking pointless to please half assed people that will just flake after getting what they want.
I'm excited for Classic, but I was hoping AV would come in it's almost original form with all the npcs and the like. I didn't make it to 60 until after most of the changes to AV were done so I've always wanted to experience AV in it's original form (minus bugs if any).
I feel bad for you as original AV was the bees knees. It really felt like World PvP in battleground form. Now it's just a rush fest.

Oh yes, Alliance had overwhelming advantages in AV. It was a challenge that developed the Horde into experienced PVP’s. Those were good times. We didn’t bitch and complain, we got determined.
dude the horde towers are OP. that hill is the slowest ever, with frosttraps, blizzards and arrows.
The Classic team reached 100 stress and succeeded their virtue check.

Nothing would make me happier than having a true classic AV experience. I get why people would want to farm marks, but I just want a 12 hour+ warzone.
Doing one would be fun, but not every single match. This is the best choice blizz could have made for AV.
PTR AV was so fun!
You can do that in world pvp then. Take a team and start messing with opposite faction town or city. See what that gets you. You might be surprised. We did it all the time in Vanilla and it was a lot more fun than AV.

@@JM-ml4hc I think that's debatable, and the fun factor of world PVP relied upon the nature of the server. If you were a Horde player on a lot of servers (at least on the EU side of the fence), you were constantly outnumbered to a significant degree - world PVP meant maybe half an hour of fun at most... followed by a massive zerg of Alliance players slaughtering everything and corpse camping.
1.12 AV - Worst decision for Classic. Nerfed AV, 4 minute rush start to finish. Stupid decision.

To spam AV with 10man premade group and win in 4 minutes. No PvP involved unless it's another premade and they stay to defend.
They didn't choose the "best" version, they choose the version that already exists in the Legion client...
And 90% of the AV changes were in favor of the Alliance and their zerg rush strategy :/ not even tried to compensate the Bridge advantage or anything :(
vanilla rush is easily defended. Just cut off their way to the hut, back cap IB GY. That's it.

@@WeallAreAdults I think you underestimate vanilla premade pvp. Avoiding horde premades and joining fresh AV's is easy when you have people holding their BG queue pops.
Stuff is streamøined by the community, PS bg queue isn't different to retail bg queue

People left the minute they got grinded by premades, I was in premades on sylvanas EU together with 3 people from method
What you guys are talking about is matchfixing which was non existant in vanilla, it probably is on private servers, and it might be on classic but hardly in vanilla ( that was what i ment )
I preferred old AV, when they got rid of all the guards, quests, etc. they got rid of a lot of the fun as well. Korrak, the summoning of Lok'halar/Ivus, cavalry/air raids, etc. It's gonna be like current where it's a single zerg across the map which ally win due to spawn and map favoritism. All it takes now is one rogue or druid bee lining to the tower, taking a flag...couldn't do that in OG AV cus the guards would have easily caught and demolished you the moment you tried taking the flag.
those will still all be in, not korrak, but lok'halar and ivus, aswell as the cavalry and air raids.
You have two people running to the flag - one trains the guards to the alliance GY while the second caps the flag.

I didn't play in vanilla, but i played AV in nostalrius and i can relate to people wanting matches to go on for longer. I liked going around the valley looking for herbs and getting a couple of random kills, i imagine i'd like longer matches more than rushed ones

So its the 10 minute AV instead of the 8 hour+ marathon version of AV. Bah...I recall playing when the raid boss protected one of the GYs and summoning your "boss" was key to winning. I recall getting the ice spear.

This 1.12 av sounds incredible dull compared to original AV
The main issue I have with it is that the 1.12 version can be cheesed (Alliance only) if you have a good leader, you can run straight to the Horde Base, ride onto a hill just outside the base, and use it to jump over the wall and then with a decently large group run straight to Frostwolf Relief Hut and cap it. You can't really do it unless you have a few high HP tanks to lead the charge or the NPC's will just rip you apart but it's still pretty cheesy that you can skip most of the mobs and then just fight the last one. It may differ slightly on retail but on private servers this was a pretty common strategy.

it is funny to see all the changes. back in the old days I always thought it was the gear progression which made the AV faster the later we got....guess that was not all :D

Same here dude. I remember the day I stopped playing WoW I was on ventrillo with my guild mates and they were having conversations. I searched through stuff to do and for whatever reason I just wasn't feeling it. I told my mates "Hey guys i'm done" they said " ok cya tomorrow dude" and I said "no I'm done, for good" they laughed and said no one quits wow. But they just couldn't understand because it wasn't the wow I loved. After 10 long years of not playing i'm excited to go back home.

@@mklizzar lol i could see writing on wall also marriage kids life and guild broke up. Be nice to go back to play a classic wow but this time i have a better idea of how to play. I have bought expanions and nipped in from time to time but simply dont like the game now the way it is. I suppose when you get older you want to spend your time you have better and enjoying what you do

@@mklizzar thats one of the reasons. Each expansion really got worse and worse. I love story lines but i was done per expansion within a month. More immature players the more expansions and less time free back then and was enjoying it less and less
That means it's the gutted AV before they added the number of players needed to be able to win it so not the classic original av.

Yup. The 1.11 patch is when AV turned into a zerg rush BG on Malfurion. Hopefully Blizzard will consider using the 1.10 version instead, if they can't go back further.
Nobody talking about the fact Blizzard said they only had patch 1.12, AV might be very hard to replicate compared to gear and stuff like that.
Believing they'd put 1.8 AV in isn't that crazy considering the 6 stage PvE plan and that delayed PvP release.

I think it could be cool if they released both as an option -- call the long one "Siege of Alterac" or something if that's an issue. People will play and enjoy both!

@@LittleZero86 Battlegroups were in 1.12, but they haven't said anything about what they'll do with Classic.
1.12 AV is just standard AV. It's pretty much run to the final boss and try to take him down before the enemy faction does. We effectively loose all the alternative quests, no War Riders, no strategic point defense, no objectives contest, no Ice Lord. It's all gone for a quick and passionless grind. Run, tag, next.
In the early versions of AV, your pve gear and talents would actually matter a lot because it was meant to be a mix of PVP & PVE. It was a great way for raiders to do PVP without having to respec every week and a great way to feel like your PVE efforts mattered outside of raiding.

ye but its not like they had a choice you know, if they dont have the data for old AV, recreating it would slow them down a lot, they have to recover the whole game, perhaps changes will come once it comes out but for now they gotta have priorities
@@Heathcz it's not going to be in the game at release anyway. They have plenty of time to shore up any missing pieces. It's laziness and nothing else. You're missing one of the integral pieces of vanilla WoW experience because these people won't put in the effort.
@@manoekin im surprised you dont believe in the team, they have shown great passion, you gotta realize blizz dont want to invest much into this, the staff must be definitely limited for this, so i definitely disagree about the laziness part. When classic launches, there will definitely be plenty of problems to fix, and a lot of content to prepare for all the release stages
@@Heathcz It doesn't change much. There's no reason to be happy about receiving an inferior product because the team is limited. If you feel criticism directed at the team is unfair, that's just how life is. Laziness maybe would be not the right term to describe the broad mistreatment this change is doing. I can understand certain things that have valid points. But the point here is a roundabout explanation about how activision is telling them they have to move the product and subsequent content releases out ASAP. Personally I don't take that well, and I don't see how any team actually committed to creating an authentic experience could either. They're not doing it because they love it, they're doing it because it's their job. That's the difference in Blizzard now. Those two ideas don't intersect.
Not sure if you listened to The Instance (one of the longest-running WoW podcast around since just before AQ) but Kaivax is RandyDeluxe, a co-host from that show and former GM of AIE (Earthen Ring-H) the biggest WoW guild. Seems like lots don’t know this fact, or have forgotten his pre-WoW life.

This excitement... It’s been 15 years since it felt this good waiting for something (cept for my daughter) and i’m 37 years old now. Personally i can’t wait and have already planned my vacation for the release, dusted of my old account and talked it over with my better half so she wont decapitate me for neglecting my family the first 2 weeks.
I want to thank everyone that never gave up on the dream that was vanilla, and fought for it all these years, and thank you blizzard for coming through for us common peons.

I LOVED AV's that lasted days. That Warlord grind was SO fun. This 1.12 is disappointing. AV was one of the only reason I would consider coming back.
Yea, summoning was necessary in at least 1/2 the games.
This is actually pretty bad news. I hope they change their mind on this. Definitely a deal-breaker for me, unfortunately.
I think you have massively misunderstood the implications here. The games will still last for several hours, most of the times. It will just no longer be impossible to finish the BG unless 15 people on the opposite side take a toilet break at the same time. There will just be more back and forth, your actions will have more consequences etc. You still have autonomy in the battleground, you can still summon the bosses or the riders, you just don't absolutely need to and you won't have half of the people leaving when the troll dies. These changes are good.
One thing is a deal breaker lol You had no intent of playing anyway then.

Blizz said they would release Classic based on 1.12, so why would they release an earlier version of AV?
As a new player to vanilla, I was kinda looking forwards to 48 hour long AVs.
Maybe it was just me. But I found that nonsense a complete waste of time everytime.
Mainly because I was Alliance and we won BGs about once every full moon.

while in the horde base the explosive experts are like... 2 continents away from the relief GY.

I think when people think of calssic AV, they remember the hours long one with the super powerful NPCs.If they introduce the 1.12 one, they will probably disappoint many people.

AV loses a lot of its charm with this. It was a perfect BG to take a break from the other BGs and just chill.
Ya know, just farm rep, snipe some clothies with my Rhok'delar, top the chart...
I remember having 6 hour AVs in TBC, you can still have games where you have to slowly push the ither team back for hours. I'm fine with this decision. Also, i hated the landmines in pservers.
I think AV, back in the vanilla days, kinda summed up the old-school approach to multiplayer games - most of us played it knowing that we wouldn't catch the opening to the game, and we wouldn't catch the ending; we were just there to fight like hell for a while. Winning, losing - didn't really matter. It was fun, that was what mattered. It was a place where you were guaranteed a big fight.
These days, every game I've played, whether it's modern WoW or Warframe or Elder Scrolls Online, it's all about completion. Not the journey to it, not the experience of it, but the end point; everyone rushes right towards the end, and all the content is balanced to encourage this.

I remember getting 1k kills in a match on my warrior. Went to bed and woke up 6 hours later to get back into the same match.
Six hours to “win” AV? Don’t you mean “six hours for Alliance to win/Horde to lose AV?” AV battle hardened us Horde. We had to work for those wins.
I prefee horde but the only reason I play alliance still is its easier to level... Also I do prefer the cities but the horde races are cooler ans I prefee their racials... Its dumb how op alliance is and I always hear about it. Wish I could have played in vanilla... I played for 5 mins at the very end on my uncles account or mg dads trial lol
I'm more disappointed with the removal/nerf of the NPCs in AV. Yes it took forever (which I loved about it) but it also made the battleground feel way more alive than it does now! Now it's so barren and it's a zergfest. When they lasted 6 hours, you had incentive to farm the mines, farm mats from enemy players and turn them in for powerful elite PC assistance. I'll bet a lot of players haven't even seen the blood God or the giant flying chicken!
Personally, I think that the best answer is always to give the players the choice.
Have there be a 1.12AV and a 1.5AV as, being honest here, they were effectively separate battlegrounds.
Let them be separate and let people queue for whichever one they want to play. And keep the 1.5AV as 1.5AV without updates. Let those of us who want to put that *War* in *Warcraft* do so, and let these tiny little one-off Battlegrounds stew in their tedium.
AV was always different than WSG or AB or EotS or others .. it was more like an even-larger-scale Wintergrasp. It felt like *war* not just a small skirmish over a lumber mill. More like real war, with pushes, flanks, counter-attacks, cavalry, airstrikes, infantry..
You know... more like Warcraft 3 but you are playing the Hero.

Indeed, you do seem to be missing the point. The people who want the true War do not care about the rewards. The OGAV could give nothing at all and old-schoolers will still play it. Right, Tips? :P
I do not care if it appeals to the masses.
I know Blizzard does want to appeal to the masses, and I understand the reasoning for their choice, but that does not mean I agree to it. I gave what I feel is the best answer, not the most expedient or even the right answer. Just the one which I would encourage given infinite resources, since it is the best of both worlds.
i know it wont happen but what would be neat is if they can make the old AV it's own BG as a event

One of the things I was most looking forward to with classic was the old AV system. I don't want to roll though the BG, that was what the other 2 were for. AV was an investment of time and energy. That is what made it fun. That added extra incentive to want to win.
Ask anyone about vanilla pvp and there's two things they'll tell you, tarren mill and southshore, and how epic AV was, and now we're getting neither

I mean Blizz had already said they were basing the Classic release on 1.12, I can't even fathom how this would be a surprise to anyone
Tribe is wrong btw, if you rush drek down its faster to spam av all day regardless if its av weekend or not. I remember this because i played in 2006 and everyone was grinding av for honor, not wsg as some private server people seem to think. Obviously this is only if you get fast drek kills, but this version of AV is setup nicely for that.
Second comment time! Love the deep dive Tips. A few Videos I want to see are, Zone by Zone leveling strats. for each race/faction
How to properly run a bank alt/auction alt. maybe a Professions Video letting us know what is in the Profs and how It can help our leveling

They should make an AV with the best of all the patches combined. Very disappointed that we won't be seeing Korrack but even I admit it was irritating waiting 2 hours for him to spawn just to complete a quest, to then have the opposite faction steal the tag.
I've been hearing that none of the private classic servers were pure vanilla. I don't fault them on that, but I do hope those players don't condemn the Blizzard launch as hybrid based on their experience of the various private versions. I gather the launch itself won't be an exact resurrection of the original game. They could not retrieve 100% of the old data. And all of the old game systems had to be translated to function in the current architecture, a major miracle in itself.
My favorite part of the 30 hour av was mining and herb while doing them. Kinda added extra pvp/ ganking while playing av.

The main thing i cared about in vanilla was classic pvp and classic av. I just want the bosses to walk the BG again...
You can still make that happen. Just, not every single game.
the bosses mostly were spawned after hours upon hours in a single AV, I saw them a couple of times and it was a massacre indeed
We want 6hr AVs
I lowkey still believe the Bone chips and Orc Spines and all those lootable race specifics were removed because of their monetary sell value. It was like 25silver a pop or something. Botting looting long dead bodies (before they made them decay on respawn) was probably waaay to easy. Also indistinguishable from someone just turning in items for Blood God/Wolf reinforcements.
I was 16 years old, it was a friday night my buddy kevin came over for a lan party,, my mom bought us fake redbulls and at around 22h we que'd up for av once we got in we did a 21h long av. Its the one thing i'll probably never forget in my gaming history, i was a mage and my buddy was a hunter the sheer amount of HK's farmed in those hours were insane
for me, i hardly disliked the 24h alterac battles... was so fucking annoying. wery happy to see the 1.12 version!

Hey tips, I need to buy a new laptop soon. Could you recommend a memory/drive size and graphics card to run classic at minimum/decent/optimal levels? Im guessing it could just mirror minimum reqs needed to run current retail. Maybe you can make a general getting ready for classic vid that will include something like this.

As far as I know, there is a button you can press and you get the classic graphics from 2004.
I think that any todays laptop can handle this.
Something to think about. If Classic becomes a hit, it may not be unreasonable for them to try and reintroduce those experiences. This returning to classic is new thing in gaming and I think there is room for trailblazing how it should be done. I would hope that those that want an earlier version will make their voices heard, as Blizzard may find a way, down the road, to do a few variants of the BG's and Raids, or even create some kind of hybrid version incorporating key parts from different patches. The sky is the limit, but the determining point will be the success of this first go round.
that's exactly what i was thinking. IF they wanted to they could bring back the old AV from 1.5,1.6. I hope in time they will and let us decide which we want to que up for.

I hope all the original world drops will be in the game. I remember killing things in the open world to try to get the original orb of deception.
I didn't play this until sometime in the middle of burning crusade and my memory of it is that it would take hours to finish even then, but I'm seeing a lot of people complaining that 1.12 isn't going to bring that experience back.

1.12 is the best version of vanila by far.

I think honor got nerfed in later vanilla patches, to avoid camping people. So it wouldn't make sense to add the difficult 1.5 AV when everyone has green gear, killing each other for 1 hour and then due the 1.12 honor system nobody would get any honor from each other anymore for 5 hours. People would play that one time for their spear-quest and then never again.
Guys, take it from someone with experience: AV really starts to drag after two hours. This update pretty much means that instead of lasting 6 hours on average, the BG will last for 2-4 hours on average instead. Also, you have the added benefit of 10 people not leaving from your side when the troll dies. It's still worth it to durdle around with the NPCs, it's still worth it to work towards summoning the bosses, the riders etc. This pretty much just means that the games won't always last for 5 hours until one side gets a massive power boost and steamrolls through the other side. There is actually value in defending towers now, since the NPCs won't do it entirely for you. You can still get yelled at for capping Iceblood, it's all fine. It's fine. This is fine. You can still make the battleground last for 40 hours, it's just not the encouraged norm anymore. You can chill.

Of course Blizzard has the patch data, they just don't want to deal with people arguing with them about whatever patch should be implemented. Remember this is the same company that unequivocally stated that they had lost the original vanilla data and it could never be recovered. Then, when pressed, voila! "Hey guys guess what, we found the data!" Yeah, so I'm guessing if they were to be pressured into it, they'd magically "find" the patch data as well.

I liked the old AV that would take hours. it felt like a whole war effort where people would farm stuff and complete tasks

The much older me appreciates that I won't have to just farm AV for honor.
Looking forward to recreating pvp battles in WSG & AB as I felt those BGs got a bit forgotten whilst people camped in AV.

Hazeman warrior was the main tank in vanilla but maybe you could getaway with a paly in a more casual raiding guild.

Thanks for update, but you mention that it's better to release 1.12 AV because summer is coming soon so they don't have enough time. But I don't think PVP/AV will be out on release so they might have more time to explore the idea of releasing the old AV.

i think this is horrible news for AV :( i really loved the long lasting AV's, turning in materials, looting corpses, doing quests to do pushs. I find this to be really bad news :/

While I believe its true that players today are more min-max oriented than players 15 years ago, I honestly don't expect players that have never touched Vanilla before to actually stay in Classic. They will probably try it out, then go back to retail. I believe the players that will stick around in Classic will be those players from 15 years ago, that aren't min-max oriented, and want those long, drawn out matches, regardless of if it is Honor efficient or not. Personally, I would rather the extra long AV matches where you could just turtle, and it would be a massive "kill everything" event, rather than a raced PVE event for honor.
from my understanding before any info on classic was out. the majority of players want them to make it at 1.12 knowing thats when most of the AV changes were made before hand. Now the same people are going to complain were getting 1.12 but not everything is 1.12? No matter what the news is the player base will never be happy 100%.
I remember AV's that where going on for more than a week...that was the days! Shame we will not experience that again 😭

I personally would like to see them do a launch version of AV and a 1.12 version and release the launch version at phase 3/4 and the 1.12 version in phase 6. People should see the epic slog that original AV was. :(

A thing Blizzard MUST ADD to Classic WoW is for people to be able to type in long names and leave space between them when they are creating their character. This is a huge immersion breaker for me. It would be fantastic if it allows me to call my character what I want and not just settle for some 1 word name. In WoW History you barely ever hear any mighty heroes that have 1 word names. And I want to feel like a mighty hero. It's always something like Genn Greymane or Varian Wrynn or Illidan Stormrage. And I wish that I could have an epic hero just like that! Please for the love of god Blizzard add that!!! I see no reason why you shouldn't! Don't limit us like this when it comes to name choices!

Trust me, 1.12 AV is the one to go with. I played both back in vanilla and everyone was relieved when they made those changes, while its fun once in a while to do a really long AV you dont want that every single match lol.
maybe blizz will take its time after release to build a long AV version and feed players with that after content is dried, such things would be rly cool, so one can pic between 1.12 av or 1.5(with bug fixxes) AV you know ?
Lol no it really wasn’t...because I knew several guild who’d do it not just for raid gear but because they could practice mechanics by dealing with AV bosses before doing real raiding. Trust me...I guarantee u if they break on AV they are gonna have more bullshit in classic that the community doesn’t want

They should just make korak spawn at 30-45 min, not long enough to ruin the exp. however, it allows for a bit longer AVs.

There's usually people commenting that he steals content. I really can't find any proof of it though. Seems more like jealousy.

I liked Bloodrager showing up and departing, I was waiting for them to do something else, like a swarm of enraged yeti stealing your pants or something. It put the R in the game. I wish they would do more fanciful and momentary stuff all thru the game. You say nerf, but if they brought in a new beastie with a similar drop, it wouldn't have been a big deal....
