Been around computers for about 50 years. Shutting down and restarting to clear the memory and allow a reset has always been the rule. Our phones are just small computers and have all of the same issues as regular computers. I have had almost zero problems by adopting this practice. I have friends who don’t do this and have issues. Cheers.

@Mike-fd4mt I agree. My computer work history goes back to 1966, vacuum tube, transistors and eventually solid state machines. From time to time I will tell someone that they aren't holding a phone or a camera when something isn't working right. I tell them it is a sophisticated computer that can also make phone calls and take pictures, and just like a PC or a laptop, sometimes you have to reboot it or even power it down and restart it to clear a problem.

Same kind of backstory, I've found with computers and networking, and now phones, to not only shut down, but on occasion to fully disconnect from power and pull the battery to clear any retained state on an errant bit.

Actually, that rebooting thing came in with Windows. I used to be a computer tech, working on systems like DEC VAX 11/780 and Data General Eclipse. I also used to work at IBM, as an OS/2 product specialist. Those and other systems, such as Novell Netware servers and Linux just don't need to be rebooted.
BTW, Android is based on Linux and iPhones on BSD Unix.

I either restart or do a full power down and power back on at least weekly, mostly because it keeps it running smoothly. A lot of iPhone users I talk to think iOS is so perfect it doesn't need it but after I convince them to do a restart, they're shocked to see how it actually runs better. The security aspect is a great bonus too!!

It amazes me how often the app developers update the app code. Someone told me it's because of all these new exploits they discover every day. Certainly the hackers are keeping the developers on their toes! Anytime there are app updates or system updates I always reboot, and it's usually once a week or so. Even for app only updates, I'm sure there is junk code left behind and a reboot clears it all away. Also true of PCs, tablets, routers and other devices that can be exploited - even printers.

While technology isn't as complex, it stpres and processes information in a similar manner. Most of us know what happens if we don't sleep for a long time. It literally fries our brains. The same thing can happen to a phone or PC. During the shutdown process, it compiles all the information stored in ram, saves it to the main storage, then on startup it checks all the information for errors. This is why most decives display a message and/or take longer to start up when not properly turned off. There are plenty of messages and warnings about doing this, but most people seem to just ignore it. I know for a fact nobody in my family restarts their phones regularly even though I have told them to do so often. Shutdown for a few seconds at least before powering up. If you have a removeable battery, remove it.

As if fires aren't reason enough.

    • @danwake4431
      @danwake4431 Před měsícem +2

Actually, these days, a reboot does a deeper 'reset' than a shutdown does. Shutdown on modern phones is a just a deep sleep, running processes are saved to a file and re-used when you turn it back on.
A reboot however releases all processes, clears RAM and cache, and gives you the fresh start. Windows started doing that first with Windows 8, and phones started following after.
Androids have a restart option usually, but on modern iphones, it just has shutdown. To do a hard restart and get all the benefits of a fresh start, you need to restart it by pressing volume up, then let go and press volume down, then let go and hold down the power button until the phone goes dark and continue holding until you see the apple icon.

For Android users power-cycling your device isn't enough to fully ensure your device is safe; you need to check what services have restarted after start-up as Android apps have the ability to restart services after a restart. iPhone restricts this from happening, with apps only regaining access to services once the app has been relaunched.
Restarts refresh activity & app caches, as well as (error) logging and the rest. This is one of the major reason all devices get such a performance boost afterwards.

My brother you have given great tips however I believe you should consider the 3 letter agencies providing solutions, also the manufacturer sends out firmware to initiate the sales of new devices.

At minimum a reboot will put the phone in the BFU state and will make it difficult if not near impossible to exploit physically if your phone is stolen or “confiscated”
This is why police will put any phones they get in a faraday bag plugged in to a power bank so it won’t power off and reboot after losing charge, and also can’t be remote wiped.
Personally, I think you should reboot every night before going to bed. Never know what might happen in the middle of the night.

My procedure is to shut down the phone for charging, so it gets rebooted every other day, usually. Glad to see there are a couple of other benefits.

I am still a little unsure. For example, with my PC a "shut-down start" is not the same as a "restart" as far as resetting the system goes. But I guess what I have always done is what you are recommending here. Just for peace sake, I shut down my phone at least once a day, and over night also just so to get some peaceful shut-eye. But I do wonder if there is a difference for phones like there are for PC's - both are electronic communication devices - a lot in common.

Biometrics lock - a recent court ruling said the police were allowed to unlock the person's phone with their thumbprint - while the person was handcuffed. The person refused to give the PIN, so they circumvented with biometrics. This allowed them to read texts leading to a conviction. DISABLE biometrics if you do not intend to use it immediately. Both Apple and Android have quick methods

There's a scheduled power on and off routine you can activate on your android at certain time periods. I normally schedule a power off and on at around midnight. By then I'm always asleep and not using my phone so that way, I get a phone reboot every night

I reboot several times a day. Just a habit.
Speaking of performance, my iphone 14 shows 3 times faster DL speeds than my Galaxy S21 Ultra using the same ISP sim card.
    Example.
    Iphone: 150 mbs D/100 mps U
    S21 Ultra: 50 D/30 U
🤔 Drives me nuts. I've tried changing APN settings. No luck.

Also, I never connect my phone to WiFi other than my own. I have enough data on my plan that I don't have to worry about using WiFi elsewhere to save data.
