Just returned to U.S. from 3 week Italy trip with my wife. We spent the last 4 days in Varenna on Lake Como. Great place to unwind after the hustle and bustle of the larger cities visited. I'm glad I viewed this video before departing on trip. We dined one evening at Albergo Milano. Thanks for the recommendation Rick. Great dinner on terrace overlooking lake with a beautiful sunset! Egidio was working the front end and taking beverage and food orders, pouring our wine, etc. He remembers you and the taping of this video 11 years ago. All in all a great evening. Highly recommend this restaurant and traveling to other Lake Como towns on the ferry.

Wonderful film-work and narrative Rick; we so enjoy your home video series here. Among the most beautiful places I have ever visited was Lake Como - Bellagio and Villa Serbelloni. The company I worked for back in 1988 rented the entire Nostalgic Orient Express for the day. We left Lake Lucerne for Zurich where it departed and we arrived at Lake Como for the highlight of our two week Swiss, German, Lichtenstein, Austria and Italy tour. This 3:00 video captures the essence of that trip very, very well. Thank you.

My first travel to Italy, after the cities and sights, Varenna was wonderful. Serene and transported to the old world Northern Italy with the mountains and the Lake. It was so beautiful it takes your breath away. I was treated like family. Joined by others for dinner. Food was genuine Italian. Invited to a card game at the hotel. I thought Albergo was the hotel owners first name.. :)

Went to Bergamo last summer, used it as a base to visit Como / Bellagio / Varenna,, Garda / Sirmione and then Milano all by train from Bergamo, It was a wonderful short break, and Bergamo's Citta' Alta is also well worth seeing.
Thanks for your information can you please advise me is is best to visit Bergamo from Milano or best from one of the lakes for transport and convince

while searching for hotels in "lake Como Italy" sometimes it says they are in Switzerland. How come? Is there a lake Como there as well or is there a place there with the same name?

Please go somewhere else or to the lesser known villages - lake Como is full and now utterly swamped with rampant over tourism, long queues and fed up locals who have been priced out of their own homes and towns. When Rick made this video there were 800 residents in Varenna - now there are less than 100. That is what we as tourists have done and continue to do - it has to stop!
